When she did reach the Chapel she was not aware that the blaze at the old oak staircase had cut off her line of retreat. Too late she ran for the far doors — and found them locked.
She tried to pray; but neither thought nor emotion found any means of expression …
… Until, at last, the obstruction in her throat cleared and she let forth a terrible cry.
The Chapel, in its last few minutes of existence, might well have been described as a Screaming Room.
