  Well, Joan thought with relief, there was no danger that Annette Martineau would ever lie in wait for her. She’d just flee.

  “Happy birthday to you,” Joan began serenading now. “Happy birthday to you…happy belated birthday, to dear Annette…happy birthday to you…?”

  Gee, no cake with candles, but there was a box of chocolates in the trunk, she just remembered. A box of chocolates in this heat was a potential disaster, she thought, visualizing it going soft in the trunk and ruining the upholstery.

  She went back to the car to fetch it and then threw herself into the hammock that was stretched across the porch.

  This will leave you free, of course, to eat with and sleep with and screw to your heart’s content all the girls you can possibly get your greedy little hands on, and to do so without the slightest pang of guilt about my feelings, if guilt’s a sensation you’re actually capable of experienc—

  She heard the bolt in the lock drop.

  The front door swung open.

  “Joan Majors.”

  “Oh, wow, Annette, I thought you were—”

  “Are those supposed to be for me?”

  Joan smiled and licked chocolate off her fingertips. “Yes,” she said, looking remorseful.

  Annette put her hands on her hips. “Why are—why are you still here? Can’t you read?”

  Joan flashed a sly grin and tucked the letter into the front of her shirt. “Not when I have a hard-on, Annette.”

  Annette turned and then paused in the doorway. “Get in here,” she said.
