  CHAPTER ONE

Kayley’s voice seemed to be echoing far in the distance, even though she was sitting not three feet away from me on my bed. She was saying something important; I knew. She was my best friend. But I really didn’t care about what she was saying. I couldn’t focus on it, anyway.

Frowning, she raised her voice a degree. “Are you even hearing me, Sydney? Think about my question. In case you missed it, here’s the recap. Do you even care about anything these days? Do you care about anything at all?”

I didn’t answer. I couldn’t. I was thinking too hard about something else.

Sitting cross-legged at the foot of my bed, raking a hand down the side of her forehead and face, Kayley continued. “I mean…ever since your mom died, it’s just like you’re a zombie or something. Are you? That? Are you a zombie? Everyone is kind of talking about it. Everyone has noticed. And, no offense, but it seems to be getting worse.

It’s like the more time that goes by, the more you get zombified. You know what I mean, Syd? The more you drop out of everything. The more you drop out of…just, kind of life in general.” Kayley paused, seeming to be waiting for a response. However, when I didn’t give one, she sighed and spoke again. “God, I feel like I could just shake you. I mean…what is going on with you? Are you a zombie, or…or, what? Like…your mom died. It was terrible. We all get that, but…it’s been, what? A year? I guess we all just thought you’d be back to normal by now.”

Back to normal. The phrase made me want to laugh out loud, although I didn’t even know why. It just made me want to laugh.

Frowning at me hard, obviously frustrated, Kayley rose from her sitting position to her knees, folding her arms across her chest while she did so. “Syd, just answer me. Please. What is wrong with you? Have you turned into a zombie, or…or what, exactly is wrong with you? Do you care about anything anymore? Are you ever going to show any signs of rejoining the human race? Or….” She paused, frowning even harder. “Or do you just want us to leave you alone? Or what?”

My aunt’s schnauzer is named Sunshine, and I gave him a few little pats and pets, reclining on my bed with a stack of pillows behind me, just thinking, before responding to Kayley.

“I think I need to take a pregnancy test. Will you go with me to buy one and read the results?”

Part of me wanted to buy the test, or a couple of them, and read the results alone. But another part of me just wanted someone there. Even someone I no longer felt close to. Just another human. And it was this latter part of me that was winning out at the moment.

In response to what I’d said, Kayley just stared at me a moment with her mouth slowly dropping open a degree. “Well…of course. Of course, I’ll buy a pregnancy test and take it with you.” Eyes wide, she stared at me for another moment before her next words practically exploded out of her mouth. “But why in the hell do you need to take a pregnancy test?”

She was right to get a bit explosive with her words. It was absolutely bizarre that I needed to one. After all, I was a virgin. At least to my knowledge I was. However, I was a month late on my period. My breasts hurt. I was frequently feeling nauseous and sometimes dizzy. Also, there was the matter of the frat party I’d fallen asleep at.

Feeling as if I were spitting everything out before I lost my nerve, I told Kayley all my symptoms. Then, I brought up the frat party. “I fell asleep on the couch. By myself. Remember? I just completely passed out.”

I really had. However, not because I’d had any alcohol. I hadn’t had a drop, nor had I ever in my life. I’d just been tired. Bone-weary, actually. Kayley had talked me into going to the party at her brother’s frat house two hours away at Central Michigan University after we’d both had an extremely long day that had started around dawn. We’d had to wake up early for “states,” meaning the state high school gymnastics championship, which our high school team had qualified for by a hair.

Then, we’d spent all day at the competition site, warming up, performing, and cooling down again which felt like endlessly, because we’d had the misfortune of having all four of our competition events spaced far apart throughout the day. I’d been absolutely beat when, over chicken-and-veggie burritos during a team bus stop to a fast-casual burrito place, Kayley had begun lobbying me to drive up to the frat party with her later that evening.

“Come on, Syd, just say yes. Are you going to be lame and just go home and sleep? It’s Saturday night. We’ve been invited to this thing. Specially invited. So just say yes. I’ll drive, and you can take a little nap on the way up there if you want. I’ve had so much coffee today that I feel like I could drive us across the country for this party.”

I could see Kayley’s pleading expression in my mind’s eye, even in the present. She’d eventually worn me down, and I’d agreed to go to the party. While stopping home for a shower, I’d told my aunt and uncle exactly where I was going and what I was doing, wondering if they were going to try to stop me or at least ask me a few questions, but they hadn’t really cared much. They didn’t really care too much about anything I did. Kayley had used this as a key point of her pitch, saying that with as long of a leash as my aunt and uncle regularly gave me, there was no reason for me to not go to frat parties every chance I got.

At any rate, driving up to Central Michigan U that night had been a mistake. I’d thought it then, after falling asleep on the couch maybe an hour after we’d arrived, and I thought it now. It had been
a mistake.

In response to my bringing up the frat party, which had been maybe six weeks earlier, Kayley just stared at me with her big brown eyes wide as saucers. “What do you think happened to you at the frat party? I mean…did something happen that makes you think you might need a pregnancy test? I mean….”

Uncharacteristically falling into silence, swallowing, she didn’t finish her thought, and I jumped in, feeling slightly uncomfortable. And also feeling slightly crazy.

“I don’t know if something happened at the party. I don’t think it did. In fact, I’m pretty sure that it didn’t. I’m pretty sure that I just slept, undisturbed, all night. But it’s just that with all my weird symptoms lately….”

I trailed off. Now it seemed it was my turn to not finish my thought.

“But…Brian kept an eye on us all night. I’m sure he did.”

Brian was Kayley’s older brother. And, like her, I was reasonably certain that he had kept an eye on the two of us all night. He’d at least made sure that we never had beer or any other kind of alcohol in our hands at the party, insisting that it was his job to be a responsible big brother. Also, I vaguely remembered him covering me with a blanket that night. Maybe.

I felt like that had been him. Nonetheless, though, he couldn’t have been watching Kayley and me all night, of that I was sure. He’d had a beer in one hand at all times, and his girlfriend in the other at least half the time. If something had happened to me that night, something that had resulted in my getting pregnant, it was entirely possible that Brian hadn’t even seen.

Becoming slightly agitated, just because I was frustrated to not be able to recall exactly what had happened that night, I filled Kayley in on my thoughts about Brian, ending by saying that it was virtually impossible for him to have kept an eye on me all night. “In fact, after I went to sleep, I bet he had his hands full just keeping an eye on you. Didn’t you say that you went up to the balcony to dance with that one guy?”

A fairly wide wraparound balcony on the second floor had really been the epicenter of the party’s activities even more than the inside of the vast ten-bedroom house. The living room, where I’d fallen asleep, actually hadn’t been that high-traffic, at least not while I’d been awake.

Kayley said that yes, she’d spent the majority of the night out on the balcony before falling asleep on a cot in Brian’s room around four in the morning, with Brian and his girlfriend watching a movie in bed across the room.

Suddenly feeling a bit nauseated, I sat up in bed a little. “Well, now we know when something could have happened to me. If Brian was watching a movie and then fell asleep, then I’m guessing he probably didn’t check in on me at all past four. And since you came downstairs the next day at…what time? Nine or ten or so? That leaves about five or six hours when I was dead asleep, with no one checking to see what might have been happening to me.”

Sitting back on her heels, Kayley gave her head a little shake, looking absolutely mystified. “I don’t think so, though. I don’t think so. Because remember those two sorority sister girls? The two girls who shared their nachos with us and were talking about the sorority with us? I think they started cleaning up all the garbage in the house around three or four in the morning. They were carrying around big garbage bags and going from room to room, and outside on the balcony and everything.

Then, the next morning, they had that big breakfast buffet ready for everyone? Remember? It must have taken a while to cook, so I don’t think they even slept that night. I think one of them even made some kind of a comment to me, something like, ‘The boys really owe us for this all-nighter’ or something like that.

So, those two girls must have had some sort of an eye on what was happening on the ground floor of the house all night…right? I mean…I would think so. Now that I’m thinking about it, I even remember asking Brian something before I went to sleep, something about if one of us should go check on you, and he said something like, ‘No, Abbey and Harmony are going to be downstairs cleaning all night. Sydney will be fine.’”

Beginning to feel even a bit sicker for some reason, I stifled a groan, running my hands over my face. “Look. Any way we look at this, we can’t be sure that someone was keeping an eye on me all night. Something could have happened to me, and I’m starting to feel more and more sure that it did. Why else would what’s happening to me be happening to me? Why else would I have every reason to need to take a pregnancy test?”

Looking distinctly troubled and uncomfortable, Kayley was slow to respond. “Well, what about other parties? What about—”

“There haven’t been any ‘other parties.’ Not in the several weeks before, or the six weeks after, the frat party. I haven’t been going out. I’ve been a ‘zombie.’ Your words. Remember? That’s part of the reason that I even went to the party with you. I was just sick of you calling me no fun lately.”

Again, studying my face, Kayley was slow to respond. “Well…here’s a thought. And it’s kind of a terrible one that’s kind of making me feel a little sick, but….” Tucking a strand of her long brown hair behind one ear, she took a deep breath before continuing. “I know you were on pop and water at the party, but any point during the night, did you take any pop or water from anyone other than Brian?”

I knew what she was thinking, and this same thought had crossed my mind. However, I shook my head.

“No. And actually, I didn’t even get my pop and water from him. I got my drinks directly from a cooler in the kitchen. I cracked open the pop myself, and I opened the bottle of water myself. I knew it hadn’t been tampered with, because it was the kind with the pull-out top sealed in shrink-wrap plastic, which was completely intact, as far as I can remember. I wouldn’t have taken a sip from the bottle otherwise.”

“Well, then this is starting to make less and less sense…because if you weren’t drugged or anything, then how could someone have assaulted you without you waking up? I mean…you’re not that hard of a sleeper.”

I conceded that I wasn’t. In fact, I never really had been, and during the past year, I’d almost been the opposite, often waking in the middle of the night for no reason at all, no matter how tired I was. When this happened, which was frequently, it usually took me at least an hour of tossing and turning and staring at the ceiling before I was finally able to fall back asleep. So, in light of this, it seemed pretty improbable that someone could have committed a sexual assault on me without me even stirring or remembering anything about it the next day.

Kayley asked me if I’d woken up with any pain, bleeding, or bruises the next day, and I said no, beginning to realize just how ridiculous my suspicion of being assaulted at the party probably sounded. I just couldn’t think of any other reason why my period might be so late, though, in addition to experiencing so many classic pregnancy symptoms. Seeming unable to think of any other reason herself, Kayley began grasping at straws, a little pink-faced, asking me if I was “absolutely positive” that I hadn’t “messed around with anyone from school or anything,” and now just felt “maybe a little regretful about it or something.”

“Because, Syd, you know I wouldn’t blame you if this is the case. You know when I lost my own virginity, I felt like a complete idiot about it. I still do. I’ll honestly never understand what made me find Kai Randall so damn hot that night, but—”

“I’m still a virgin, Kayley. Or…well, at least I thought I was. I’ve never done more than just make out with anyone, anyway. I’ve never done any more than that that I can remember, at any rate. Not to mention that you know I haven’t even gone out with anyone in months, not even just to grab something to eat.’ or something.”

“And you’re absolutely positive that you’re a full month late for your period, and you’re absolutely positive that all your symptoms are pregnancy symptoms?”

I honestly found it difficult to dignify her question with a response. “I’m absolutely positive that I’m a full month late…and I’ve looked up all the pregnancy sympto
ms on the internet. I’m absolutely positive that I’ve been experiencing most of them.”

This response just left Kayley frowning, and when she didn’t say anything in return after a few moments, I sighed, raking my hands over my face.

“I feel so dumb. I never should have fallen asleep right there on the couch at the party. I should have just forced myself to wait for you to finish dancing, then went to sleep right next to you in Brian’s room, how we planned. If I had, then none of this would be happening. I’m sure of it. I’m starting to feel sure that something happened to me, even though I don’t remember waking up for a single second.

I must have just been sleeping harder than I’ve ever slept in my life, because of our long day at states that day. That has to be it. And as for why I didn’t wake up with bruises if I was assaulted, all I can think was that I didn’t have any simply because I obviously didn’t fight back. So, there would have been no reason to hold me down or hit me or anything.

And as far as why I didn’t wake up in pain or bleeding the next day…well, I’ve heard that some girls just don’t have pain or bleeding after they lose their virginity. Or after it’s taken from them, I should say, in my case.”

Now sitting cross-legged again, Kayley just stared down at her ankles for a few moments, head in hands, before lifting her gaze to my face. “This is really crazy, Syd.”

  “I know.”

We just looked at each other for a long moment before I spoke again.

“I need to get a couple of pregnancy tests at the store…maybe some store a little way out of town so that no one from school sees us. There’s still a chance that some random person could spot us, though, so if you don’t want to go, I totally understand. I honestly don’t care either way. As long as I can get my hands on a couple of pregnancy tests—”
