What Goes Around Comes Around Page 32

by Con Lehane

It was one of those nights when drinking didn’t do anything but make me feel worse. So I had one last beer around two A.M. and left. It had been raining most of the night and really picked up before I’d gone a block. I didn’t much care about that, either—just walked along getting soaked—until when I was crossing 110th Street, a red Jeep Cherokee came down Broadway. No one shot at me this time. It just splashed through the glistening intersection, spraying muddy water. I stood on the corner, watching it speed down rain-slicked Broadway, watching the windshield wiper slapping back and forth, clearing the back window.
