Wolf snorted softly but took the opportunity to sit on the bench beside Salvadore.
Salvadore dropped down to sit beside Wolf.
Wolf dragged his hand over Salvadore’s arm, the touch gentle and warm, and he held onto Salvadore’s hand. “First I need to know if you’re okay with the idea of working with Matthew, Ian, and Devon on a project of indeterminate length. You would spend a significant amount of time with each of them.”
Salvadore rubbed his arm and eyed Wolf. “I could do it. Ian’s not bad, Devon’s kind of crazy, and Matthew… well, I could do it if it means I have a purpose here. I like being your mate, but after heat season… well, I have no idea what I’m expecting but I figure the fucking won’t take up as much time.” He flashed Wolf a carefree smile.
“But would you want to?”
His smile fell away. “I don’t know.” Was he really over the thing with Matthew? He’d like to think he was, but reality sometimes had a way of smacking him upside the head when he wasn’t looking. “I’m used to working hard, harder than I’ve been working the last year, and all that sitting around and planning was started to get boring as hell.”
“You’re the only human so far that the universe has gifted with the abilities of a watcher. You told me something needs to be done about the lack of human law enforcement inside the protectorate since the renegotiation of the treaty with your government after the last heat season. You can have a part in fixing that.”
“Uh, okay.”
“You’re young—”
“Don’t start that again—”
“—but you can learn.”
“Hell yes, I can.”
“And you have a good heart. I’ve heard it speak.”
“That’s—”
“Not mind reading,” Wolf said.
“That wasn’t—”
“Yes, it was.”
Salvadore scowled. “Asshole.”
“You’re my life, Salvadore. I can’t wait to share my world with you.”
Salvadore cleared his throat. “You’re already sharing mine. You’re going to like it here.”
Wolf grinned, the points of his eyeteeth flashing. “There are definitely parts I’ve discovered an interest in.”
“Like me.”
“Like your deer. They are the most delicious of all Earth’s game animals.”
Salvadore punched Wolf on the shoulder.
Wolf growled at him, grabbed his thighs, and yanked Salvadore right off his ass until he was flat on his back on the bench.
Salvadore grabbed Wolf’s face between his hands and kissed him hard on the mouth.
Real life had never tasted so sweet.
