Lone Wolf (The Adamos Book 6) Page 7

by Mia Madison

As soon as he can move, he rolls us so I’m on top, him still inside me. I lay my head on his chest as our breathing slows, my hand sifting through his hair, his cupping my ass. I’m getting drowsy when he says, “Love you, babe.”

Tears prick my eyes. I go up on my elbows, looking down at him. “I know,” I say softly.

He rolls me onto my back and comes up on an elbow. “Never thought I’d find a woman like you. Never guessed that shy little girl would be the one for me one day.”

I give him a trembling smile. “You were always the one for me. But I spent a lot of years thinking it would never happen.”

Wolf takes my mouth in a slow, deep, sizzling kiss. When he raises his head, his eyes are burning. “Glad things worked out the way they were meant to. Now, babe, turn over.”

I’m on my stomach, nervous excitement shivering through my veins, when his cell phone goes off. “Fuck,” he mutters, and reaches past me to grab it where it’s lying next to mine. “You got Wolf.”

He listens, then his body jackknifes off the bed. “Fuck!”

I don’t even wait to hear what’s going on, just scramble out of bed and get dressed. He ends the call with a string of profanity and starts dragging on his clothes. “Honey,” I say. “Tell me.”

  “Compound’s been torched.”

“Oh my god.” I shove my feet into boots. “The Russians?”

  “Probably.”

He stalks out of the bedroom and I race after him. “Is everyone all right?”

“Don’t know yet.” He reaches my front door and looks down at me, the rage and pain in his eyes terrible to see. I speak before he can.

“Please, Wolf. Don’t make me stay here. Take me with you.”

There’s an electric silence before he jerks his head and holds the door for me.

By some miracle, everyone’s accounted for and safe. But every building on the property is a total loss. I move among the old ladies, who are standing in a tight group off to the side while their men talk in low, angry voices.

My cousin Dante, Rico’s twin brother and one of Wolf’s lieutenants, stands by my man, talking too low for me to hear. In the harsh glare of the parking lot lights, the only illumination we have left, his face is grim, his eyes harder than I’ve ever seen them.

A roar of engines announces the arrival of several more people. Tonio pulls in on his bike, followed by Rico on his. A black SUV follows them, and Carlo climbs out.

“Brother,” Tonio says when he reaches Wolf. “Came as soon as I heard.”

Carlo’s right on his heels. “I know I ain’t a member, but you’ve had my back. I’m gonna have yours.”

And then Rico’s there, face to face with Wolf, and I hold my breath. “Got no right to be here,” he says quietly. “You know that. But still, I got every right to be here, and you know that too.”

The two men lock eyes for a long moment before Wolf says, “Never been anything but a privilege to ride with you.” Rico nods, and then all the men move toward their bikes.

“Tonio,” I call softly, and he turns to me. I tilt my head toward the old ladies. “Is it okay if we hang at your place?” His house is closer to town than Wolf’s, so it’ll be easier for everyone to get to.

“Yeah, babe. Cait’s there; she’ll let you in. I’ll let her know you’re on the way.”

“Thanks,” I tell him, and then I watch Wolf confer with Carlo for a few moments before they head to their respective vehicles. Before I can check the impulse, I’m running across the pavement. I reach my man just as he climbs on his bike.

“Babe—” he starts, his voice impatient.

“I love you. Be safe. Come back to me.”

His face changes. He yanks my head down and gives me a hard, close-mouthed kiss. “I promise,” he says, and then he rides away.

Tonio’s house is full of women and children. All the old ladies are here with their kids, and all the Revved girls have come too. Erin says Kosta is helping out behind the scenes. She doesn’t specify how, and I figure it’s better not to ask.

Even though it’s the middle of the night, none of the women can sleep. The moms have put their kids to bed in the guest rooms, but otherwise we’re all huddled together in Tonio’s big living room, too tense for more than sporadic attempts at conversation.

I tried to clean the house just for something to do, but it’s already clean. Cait told me she keeps it tidy, and Tonio has a cleaning service come in because it’s a big house, and he doesn’t want her to have to spend a lot of time on it.

Nobody’s hungry. Getting drunk, though tempting, is not a good idea. If anything bad happens to any of our men, we’ll need our wits about us. So we wait.

When the doorbell rings, Cait and I exchange wide-eyed glances. Tonio wouldn’t do that at his own house, and it’s not a good sign if the club is here without him. She hurries to the door, and I follow her.

“Crap,” she whispers when she gets to the security screen. It’s my cousin Lando. The cop. We look at each other again before she opens the door to him.

When he moves to come in, she stands aside. He’s family, after all. “Cait,” he says, and then his eyes come to me. Then his gaze moves beyond us, to the silent group of women in the living room, and his jaw goes tight.

“You know where Wolf is?” he says to me.

“No,” I answer quietly, and it’s the absolute truth.

“And you don’t know where Tonio is,” he says to Cait. She shakes her head.

“Fuck,” he mutters. “You talk to them, you tell them to be smart, all right? This is enough of a mess without them goin’ vigilante. We got a bunch of cops out on the streets and we do not need to be runnin’ into Firestorm or my fuckin’ cousins.”

Cait and I have another wordless, worried conversation before she says, “We’ll tell them as soon as they get in touch.”

“Right.” He shakes his head, rakes a hand through his hair, and starts to leave before he turns back to us. “Either of you learn anything — anything — that the cops should know, you call me. Hear?”

We both nod, and then he’s gone. Cait shuts the door behind him and we go straight into a hug. “Fuck,” I whisper.

“They’ll be all right. Our men are smart.” Her voice is shaking, and she doesn’t add what both of us are thinking: that they’re also alpha males with a driving need to protect what’s theirs.

“Carlo’s with them,” I say softly, my eyes going to Gina, who’s huddled in an armchair watching us. “He’s got training for these kinds of situations.”

“He hasn’t got training for the Russian mob,” she whispers, and I hug her tighter.

Dawn is creeping into the sky when we hear motorcycles in the driveway. Most of us have dozed off by then out of sheer exhaustion, and we jerk upright and climb to our feet, from chairs and couches and even the floor, wherever we happened to curl up when we couldn’t hold on anymore.

Tonio’s first through the door. Cait flies to him, going into his arms as a stream of men follows him in. One by one, they reunite with their women as I stare at the door, the knots in my stomach getting tighter and tighter.

In the wild, when wolf packs are on the move, a senior member takes the lead. It’s the alpha who brings up the rear, where he can watch over the whole pack and protect them from any surprise attacks. So it’s fitting, after seconds that last a lifetime, that Wolf is the last one through the door.

He doesn’t wait for me to come to him. Weaving his way among the couples as I do the same, he reaches me and his arms come around me, crushing me against him. I don’t mind; it only matters that he’s here, whole and breathing and apparently unharmed.

Still, when his grip eases, I run my hands over him, checking for injuries. “I’m all right, babe,” he says quietly. “Promised my girl, didn’t I?”

“Honey,” I whisper, hands to his chest.

He touches his mouth to mine. “Let’s go home.”

I’m in Wolf’s bed, riding him. His han
d skims down my body to find my clit. “Get there,” he orders, his other hand tweaking one of my nipples.

I gasp and change my angle, my hips working, my head thrown back. “Dani,” he growls, “hurry.”

  “Almost there,” I pant.

He twists my nipple and pinches my clit at the same time and the pressure bursts outward, carrying me with it. The next instant, still coming, I’m on my back and he’s pounding into me.

My nails score his back as he pummels me. “Again,” he demands, reaching for my clit.

  “I can’t,” I gasp.

“You’re gonna come with me, woman.” He fucks me harder, his fingers working me. Pleasure coils in my core, building and swelling, until I clench around him and he buries himself inside me with a groan.

When I come down, he’s still moving, slowly now, stroking gently in and out of me, his face in my neck. I love that. My fingers wind through his hair, and I press a kiss to his jaw.

It’s a week after the compound burned. None of the men will talk about what happened that night; all Wolf will say is that Firestorm — and this town — sent a message. I hope it’s enough.

Fortunately, the buildings were insured. I’ve already started designing new ones to the members’ specifications. It sucks that this happened, but they’re going to get just what they want when they rebuild.

Wolf glides to a stop inside me and lifts his head. “You hungry?”

  “Yeah, honey.”

“I’m takin’ you into town for dinner. Dress nice.”

This is new; we take turns cooking, or sometimes hit Revved café, but he hasn’t taken me anywhere fancy. I grin at him. “Okay.”

Even hurrying, it takes me a while to get ready. “We’re not meetin’ the fuckin’ Queen,” Wolf grouses.

“You said nice,” I remind him. “Nice takes time.”

“Knew there was a reason I don’t go in for this shit.” But he leans in the doorway of the bathroom, watching me put on the last of my makeup, and his eyes travel my body in its little black dress and high heels.

I meet his eyes in the mirror. “We both know what you’re thinking right now.”

He sends me his fallen-angel smile. “You mean about how I’m gonna fuck you in those heels later?”

“Uh-huh,” I breathe, and his eyes get hot.

“You’re not ready in two minutes, later’s gonna be now and we’ll miss our reservation.”

I get quivers in several locations. “Then quit distracting me,” I order, and he chuckles before he pats my ass, in a way that tells me another part of this evening’s agenda, and walks away.

When we get into town, Wolf passes Luigi’s, where our reservation is, and pulls into the parking lot behind a trendy office building. “What are we doing here?” I ask.

  “Wanna show you something.”

Puzzled, I follow him to the back door, where he lets himself in. A shiver runs up my spine. “Why do you have keys to this building?”

He doesn’t answer, just leads me to the elevator. At this time of night, with the building deserted, it comes right away and we take it to the third floor. Wolf turns left out of the elevator and leads me to another door, which he also unlocks.

We go in and he turns the lights on. It’s a suite of offices, bigger than mine and way nicer. All the offices have windows with a view of the mountains.

  “You like it?” Wolf says.

  “It’s beautiful.”

  “It’s yours.”

  “What?” I gasp.

“Leased it for a year. You got new clientele seekin’ you out, need offices to match.”

This is true. Tonio’s development is finished, and it’s put me on the map. I’ve had a flood of requests come in, and my tiny little suite has not been up to par.

  “But, honey, the compound—”

His hand curls around the back of my neck. “Been runnin’ that bar a long time, Dani. Got a good manager, lots of customers, low overhead. I ain’t hurtin’.”

I suck in a shaky breath, trying not to cry. “Wolf. I don’t know what to say.” Going up on my toes, I touch my mouth to his. “Thank you.”

He takes over the kiss, and it’s a long while later before he sets me back on my feet. “Was gonna do this at the restaurant,” he mutters. “Rather do it when I got you alone.”

“Do what?” I say, and then I see the velvet box in his hand. My hand goes to my mouth. “Oh my god.”

Wolf opens it to reveal an enormous solitaire diamond. “Oh my god!” I cry, trying not to totally lose it.

“We’re makin’ it official, woman. Want you in my bed, in my life, my babies in your belly.”

I’m beyond words. All I can do is hold out my hand. Wolf slides the ring on, and it fits perfectly.

I go into his arms again. “I love you, Reid Calhoun.”

“Love you too, Lady D. Now let’s go eat.” His eyes go around the suite. “Soon as you get your desk in here, gonna fuck you on it.”

I’m laughing and crying and horny, all at the same time. “Okay, honey.”

He puts his arm around me, mine goes around his waist, and we walk into our new life together.
