“Relief that we’re moving to London.”
“Relief because you’ll have a steadier income there?”
“That too, but mostly I’ll just be relieved that you’ll be the one people stare at every time you open your mouth.”
“Ohmygod. They will, won’t they?”
“That was a joke, wife.”
“But it’s true. They’ll judge everything about me. They’ll call me an ignorant American.”
“An ignorant American? Is that what you imagine Brits think of Americans in general or just you?”
“I don’t know. What do they think?”
He taps the tip of my nose. “Judging by my whole family, they’re bound to think you’re utterly charming.”
“Well, that was not your family’s first impression, and strangers are not going to be as forgiving. I’ll have to learn to fit in.”
“Please don’t. I love you the way you are.” He pulls out his phone and shows me a photo he’d taken of Zak and me. “This is a portrait of all I need in life to be happy.”
“And,” I say, switching his camera to selfie view, “this is all we need.”

Thank you to friends who encouraged me and gave advice and feedback as I worked on this book: Jennifer Neri, Esther Gayoba, Sara Saunders Lewis, Judith Baxter, and Dee Branzell.
And, of course, thank you dear readers. Without you, the story is incomplete.
