Like a Woman Scorned Page 14

Alison smiled warmly at him at asked, “Are you heading all the way across?” She pointed to the north side.

“Can’t,” Michael said, shaking his head. “I’ll never make it back. You?”

Alison shrugged. “I guess not. Getting far enough from home already.”

Michael extended his arm back toward the city. “After you, then.”

Alison purposefully jogged at a slow pace back down the bridge. Michael followed just behind, but sometimes came up beside her for a few moments, as if he were testing to see if running alongside her was okay. At one such time, he pointed out over the bay and said, “Wow.”

Alison looked in the direction of his finger.

“A rainbow over the bay,” Michael said. “And it hasn’t rained all day.”

It was indeed a full, beautiful, five-colored rainbow settled over the east bay. Alison had never seen one quite like that before, especially on a day with no precipitation. It looked …hopeful.

When they came off the bridge, Alison continued running on the west side of the park along Lincoln Blvd. She knew that was the direction of the microbrewery restaurant where Michael worked, in the Richmond area. Before they got there, though, Alison stopped at a bench in the park. There was an elderly woman feeding some ducks nearby. Michael stopped as well. They both caught their breath for a while.

“I suppose you need to be getting to work?” Alison asked.

“Well, yes actually, after going home and showering first. Are you hungry? How would you like a free dinner? Being friends with a bartender has its perks, you know.”

“Oh, do you have a full bar there?”

“No,” Michael said. “Just beer and wine. I don’t know how to make drinks.”

  “Sounds perfect,” Alison said.

“Great. I start work at six. Please come in and sit at the bar any time after.”

  “I’ll be there at 6:15.”

But the right guy did come along and things have been awesome ever since. Hang in there, my single girlfriends. He is out there. You might meet him anywhere, any time—except, of course, in your house. So get out there. You might not have to go any farther than your front yard, who knows?
