The Breadmakers Saga Page 59

by Margaret Thomson-Davis

Catriona felt the journey towards understanding, the challenge of life beginning. She felt thanks to Sammy, that she had managed to get herself on the right track.

It would be nice to see Sammy again. Friends were so important. Friends were the links in the lifeline to which she must cling.

Yet, at the same time, thinking of Sammy brought depression and memories of the air-raids and the deaths of neighbours and good friends and her own son.

Sadness spread out and encompassed all the other mothers’ sons and all the other neighbours all over the world, the unknown hundreds, thousands and millions. She felt overwhelmed by the tragedy of war. And she was afraid of what tomorrow might bring. But she struggled with the fear and suddenly into her mind came the text:

‘Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.’

It seemed a revelation. She had strength enough for one day.

She relaxed back against the pillow and a breeze from the open window made golden cobwebs of her hair.

Her steady gaze studied a bird floating free in the sky outside; small and delicate yet powerful; swooping and circling, climbing triumphantly, higher and higher.

Catriona smiled her secret smile to herself.

One day was all she needed.
