Alec smiled. “He did say I wouldn’t need him. Didn’t he?” And then he sat heavily on the nearest chair. There were beads of perspiration on his forehead. “He did say that, didn’t he,” he repeated, as though listening to his own voice.

One day, Alec and Suzy sat on the pliant stone slabs of their villa on the Home Planet, staring at the sublime view, unfolding even as they looked. It seemed to waver and solidify, as if fulfilling their innermost desires. They came here when tired, or when the trials of everyday life seemed a little heavy. Here they languished, filled themselves with beauty, which Suzy enhanced further on each visit. It seemed to them that there was nothing to stop them from staying here forever. For ever and a day…?

Time was such an elusive concept.

Tell me, Sue––don’t you think I should go back and write all this down?

  You mean your early exploits?

Well yes, to start with. But if people accept it, if people buy the idea, then I could write the second part, also. I could call the first part ‘Princess’, and the second, a sort of combination of Alec and Sandra. Together. We could call it ‘Alexander’. After all, I’ve never really been Alec, have I? It would be a love story that started before time began and which will go on forever...”

“Let’s go back, darling, Sacha is alone,” she broke silence with a coy whisper.

“Really, darling, it’s not necessary,” Alec laughed, seeing the expression in her eyes. “Sacha is never alone.”

And Alec peek-a-boo’d down to Earth, before she could deny his words.

A minute later Suzy followed him; and a little later, so did Sacha. They didn’t even know he was there, listening to their thoughts. He wanted to remember what it was like to be a baby. A human baby. But that’s another story. Who can tell? Perhaps Sacha will share it with us. One day.

  One day soon?

  So long…

  Acknowledgments

I would be remiss were I not to thank my many friends for their first reactions, editorial comments, and meticulous proofreading.

In addition, I wish to thank Dr. John Lederman, whose book The God’s Particle, inspired me to venture into the world of physics. He filled me with enchantment, which permeates his world, populated with invisible inhabitants, who seem to display a greater variety of behavioral characteristics than some people I’ve met. I trust my rambling will meet with his approval.

Finally, as always, my gratitude to my wife, Bozena Happach, who, having put up with being a grass widow for weeks on end, offered me her inimitable insights and ever growing editorial skills.

  Sincerely,

  Stan I.S. Law

PS. Although since writing Alexander there are claims that the Higgs particle has been discovered, for me the Universe has lost none of its mystery. Hence Sacha continues his exploits.
