Surviving The EMP (Book 6): Final Stand Page 17

by Casey, Ryan

“Jeez,” Emma said. “Be careful. Don’t want you setting on fire.”

He held it out towards her, then. Candles blowing in the slight spring breeze. Smile on his face.

Because for all of his weaknesses, he was happy.

For all of their individual weaknesses didn’t matter.

  They were a group.

  They were together.

And they were going to stay together and keep on fighting for one another for the rest of their lives.

“Happy birthday, Emma,” Jack said. “Make a wish.”

Emma looked around at all the people standing around her.

She looked off towards the trees, over the field, towards the sunlight.

Then she looked back at the cake, took a deep breath, and closed her eyes.

She blew the candle lights out.

But she didn’t have to make a wish.

Because she already had everything she needed right here.

  Chapter Forty-Six

Jack looked around at his people.

  He ruffled Villain’s fur.

He saw all the smiles around him.

Then he saw the sun shining down on the beautiful fields around him.

He sat there in his wheelchair, surrounded by the people he loved, and he smiled.

  Because they were strong.

  They were together.

And Wayne might be gone. India might be gone. So many people might be gone.

  But they were together.

  They had each other.

And they were going to beat this world. No matter what it threw at them.

He closed his eyes. Took a deep breath.

“You’re still here with us, India,” he whispered. “You’re still here with us, Wayne.”

He opened his eyes and looked up at the beautiful blue sky.

Somewhere overhead, just out of sight, a plane drifted across the sky.
