Graham waved it as he dabbed the “stop” button. “I knew if I stroked your ego a little, you’d tell me everything I wanted to hear. And those things, I’m sure you’re aware, are pretty illegal.”
“Bastard…”
“Goodbye, Sophia. And if you really want to keep your life together, and also your law license, you won’t try taking me to court.”
Minnie smiled widely, enjoying the moment. “Aim for the stars, and hit the moon. But sometimes, you aim too high, you end up right back on Earth. With … I dunno, mechanical difficulties … and I ain’t gonna be repairing your … rocket…”
Graham squeezed her hand. “I think you stretched that metaphor as far as it’ll go.”
“Yeah, I got excited.”
Sophia stood there, her silence speaking volumes as her fists bunched, her eyes narrowed in anger. Minnie could all but see the gears turning—how can she get out of this? How can she turn it to her advantage?
“Ma’am,” Lindsey called from behind Sophia. “The partners want to see you right now and they sound a little bit pissed.”
“Goodbye Sophia and good luck with your life,” Graham said as he and Minnie made to leave.
When they were some distance away, Minnie called out to Sophia, “Enjoy planet Earth for a while!”
She and Graham burst into laughter as they approached Becca.
“I’m sorry,” Graham whispered into Minnie’s ear.
“Me too,” she replied.
“Okay?”
“Very okay,” she said as she put her head on his shoulder.
“Hey! You two! Can we get all lovey-dovey later on, I got a class to teach,” Becca shouted.
They got to her in the back seat, smiling and not wanting to let go of each other. Minnie had no idea where this relationship would take her—the stars, the moon, or simply back to her garage to start drumming up trade—but it was certainly the beginning of something.

Logan Summers.
