Huxley seemed to sense her discomfort and lay still, settling deep within her pussy and nestling to the very end of her channel. He waited for her breathing to calm before he moved. Slowly at first, in and out. In and out. Dani groaned.
“Damn,” he intoned reverently.
Hux let go of her hands and Dani took immediate advantage. As she reveled in the big cock inside of her, she let her hands roam his back and buttocks, scoring his flesh lightly with her nails. He growled his approval, and his eyes glittered down at her. He rubbed her cheek with his nose, breathing her scent in while he slid home.
His hand delved between them, and he found her clit. It became more difficult to keep her eyes open. He pinched in ever decreasing circles around her nub of pleasure, applying exquisite pressure. Her lids narrowed to slits and her cries became needy. She bucked underneath him. Huxley increased his speed until she couldn’t catch her breath. Every nerve ending inside her pussy throbbed and tingled. She bit his shoulder, clenched around his cock, and came with a scream. “Huxley.”
She spasmed again and again, regarding him with a sense of wonder, giving him his promised eye contact, even though—with her languorous after-tremors—her lids begged to close. Her body went limp, but only for a moment, because her amazing lover sped up again. He pistoned his hips, climbing to reach his own release. She wrapped her legs around him, driving her heels into his ass, moaning as he hit sweet spots inside that she’d never known she had. He gripped her tightly and she urged him on.
Huxley loved her noises, he loved her heat, and with her eyes still locked on his, he was the closest he’d ever been to ecstasy. How could sex be so different with Dani than with all the other women he’d had? Hux shot that down. No room for his past to fit in this bed. He wouldn’t sully the moment.
Huxley denied himself a fast finish. He slowed down, in and out, building his own pleasure, watching the flush spread across Dani’s chest that told him she’d headed up the slope again. She slid her hand down between their bodies and…
The little minx grabbed his balls. He moaned. A warm finger swept purposely to his perineum, and dammit, he was lost. The base of his spine seized, his testicles tightened, and his release surged upon him…intense, coming in great bursts, stealing his breath. She clenched around him again as he finished, finding her second orgasm, and it all felt right. Good.
Huxley kissed Dani’s neck as he unwound from his high. He murmured nonsense in her ear, and withdrew his still semi-hard prick.
She reached for him, but Huxley rolled off. “Got to clean up,” he mumbled.
Huxley felt her eyes follow him as he took the few steps to the bathroom before he gently closed the door. He leaned back against the barrier, breathing hard, beginning to shake. Fuck. He’d never felt more vulnerable in his life, but he’d done it.
He’d given Dani everything he could, everything he was capable of.
He just hoped it was enough.
Chapter Fifteen
Dani-Lee should have known. Saturday’s were always busy in the ER. She snapped off what felt like her hundredth pair of sterile, purple gloves, and looked at the clock. It showed just after eleven at night. She’d worked a fifteen-hour shift, and after being stagnant for several months, she ached. Her body wasn’t used to the long hours. All she wanted to do was head home and drop into bed, but it would be up to the bad guys whether or not that would happen.
“Coming out, Candy,” she murmured via microphone to the agent who had spent all day pacing around the hospital. If Dani dragged in exhaustion, she could only imagine that Candy must be bored out of her mind, even having been privy to everything Dani had said and done all day.
“Copy that,” Candy’s voice echoed in her head. “I’ll be waiting in the car, watching the door.”
If Matthew and friends wanted to abduct her, it would be as she emerged from the hospital.
Early that morning when Hux had dropped Dani off, they all felt pretty sure there had been someone watching their interaction with more-than-casual interest. They’d put on a good show.
Upon Dani emerging from Huxley’s car, Candy had leaned in his passenger side window. “Don’t even fucking think about calling her. You assholes have screwed her life up enough,” she’d yelled loudly.
Dani had played along, looking embarrassed and pretending to tug Candy away from the car. “Candy. Really,” she’d implored in a high-pitched voice. “It’s all over now.”
Candy had thrown off her arm, looking angry. “I mean it, Dani. These guys have been messing with your head, and I’m going to kick some ass if they bother you again.” She had pounded her fist on the side of the door, leaving an actual dent, and received a middle finger salute from Huxley before he’d burned rubber out of the lot.
“Fuck you,” Candy had called after him. “I’m staying here all day, so don’t come back.”
They’d walked Dani’s fake luggage over to Candy’s car, while pretending to be in deep discussion. In reality, what Candy wanted to know had nothing to do with the op.
“So, did he get in your pants?” She had wasted no time asking, and Dani was sure color had worked up her face. “Ho. I guess that’s a yes.” Candy looked smug. “Did he fuck you, or just tease you with some more tongue and tickle?”
“We did the whole thing.” Dani-Lee knew her face glowed. “And it was…he really knows what he’s doing in bed.”
“Glad for you, sister.” Candy had thrown Dani’s bags in the trunk. “Did he kiss you this time? Sleep with you after?”
Damn. Leave it to Candy to punch to the heart of things. No. Hux hadn’t been able to overcome those obstacles. Candy must have seen the defeated look on her face.
“Okay. No sweat.” Candy had said, letting it go. “You made some good headway,” she comforted. “Now go be brilliant at work, and I’ll hang out all day and make myself visible.” Dani had heaved a sigh of relief that Candy thought things had gone well.
Dead tired, Dani emerged through the sliding glass door into the quiet night darkness. She hesitated with what she figured to be just the right amount of caution while looking around for Candy’s car. She brought both hands up to either side of her head and held the thick waves away from her face at the temples, shaking her tresses back to dispel some of the tension in her neck. She made the first step toward the parking lot.
Right on cue, a blue, nondescript car fifteen yards away pulled from a spot by the curb and skidded to a stop beside her. The front and back doors burst open and a man with a hoodie worn low, sitting in the rear seat, pointed what looked to be a gun at her from the confines of his sweatshirt pocket.
He grunted. “Get into the front. Now.”
He didn’t play around. Dani hesitated for a second and the guy swung a jean’s clad leg out of the car. “Did I say now, bitch?” he reiterated.
Dani did as he ordered on shaky legs. Once she slid into the seat, the driver’s voice greeted her.
“Hey, Doc.”
Dani cringed.
“Close the door and get comfortable while we get acquainted.”
She did as she was told and the car moved forward, picking up speed. “What do you want from me?” Dani hissed. “I don’t know you…and I’m not with those…those people anymore.” She gave her prepared speech. “If you realized what they are, you’d know why I’m not.”
“Oh, I know what they are. But what I can’t quite wrap my head around is that it took you all this time to figure it out.” He perused her suspiciously from the corner of his eye, but with wry amusement. “I’m Matthew, by the way. I’ll be your new keeper.”
So here was the asshole who had kidnapped Tess and then Glory. They had it right. He could have been quite handsome if he wasn’t such a prick, and if his eyes weren’t so close together.
Quiet descended for a several minutes, and Matthew seemed to be okay with that. Dani looked out the window as they crossed over the Neponset River Bridge then spoke, as if she wanted to give him an explanation.
> “I was originally told they were an undercover branch of the government, and that I’d be well compensated for the service I’d be doing for my country if I stayed on as their doctor,” Dani lied.
“Then let me guess. You observed them misting in and out, understood they communicated with their minds, and got a load of how fast they heal. How am I doing?”
“Good. I mean, yes, that’s right,” Dani answered primly, folding her hands into her lap.
“Turning onto Gallivan Boulevard,” Candy’s voice in her earpiece barked.
She trailed Dani, and behind her, Huxley followed.
Dani continued with her speech to Matthew. “I may be a superb surgeon, but it takes me a while to figure out social situations. By the time it occurred to me they weren’t who they purported to be, I had, uh, become involved with one of them.”
“Got yourself some god-dick, hey baby?” Matthew reached across the seat and touched her knee. It took all her resolve not to flinch.
“Actually,” she cleared her throat, “He’s human, and it’s partly your fault.” She gave him what she hoped sounded like a disgruntled snort.
“Morton Street,” Candy supplied.
It disconcerted Dani, having a conversation with Matthew and hearing the agent in her headset.
“How so?” Matthew now looked completely at ease.
“When you tried to follow me out to Northampton,” Dani turned accusing eyes to Matthew, “I was accompanied by a human who lives with the gods. Because we had to hide, we ended up in a cabin together for the night.”
“So you fucked Huxley. What a prick that guy is.”
Dani swallowed and Huxley swore in her ear.
“He doesn’t know what a real prick I’m going to be,” Hux bit out. “Answer him, sweetheart. Tell him you agree.”
“You’re correct, but I didn’t know that. He seemed very caring at the time.”
“Did he squeeze your tits?” Matthew laughed.
“Fucking dead man,” Huxley snapped.
“That’s none of your business,” she huffed at him. “But what occurred there led to other things, and we started a relationship—”
“Don’t tell me,” Matthew cut in. “A few months of fucking and he moved on. It would have been better for you to have gone for one of the immortals,” he said knowingly. “I’ve got myself one, and she’s the hottest bitch I’ve ever planted myself in.”
Dani felt like throwing up at the idea of Matthew fucking, but she feigned interest. “Oh really?” she choked.
“Yup. Apparently gods and goddesses can’t be beat. If you’d nailed one of them, at least you’d have had a good time. I’m thinking that riding that worthless human was a waste.”
Before Dani could answer, Matthew edged the car over to the side of the road and stopped.
“Pulling over on Morton Street half a mile after Blue Hill Ave,” Candy clipped.
“Now you’re not going to like this, but I have to search you before I bring you in. Just a precaution you understand.” He didn’t seem in the least bit contrite.
Dani had known this would happen, they’d talked about it. But Candy had been pretty satisfied with how well the small mic hid under the doctor’s bra, almost into her armpit.
“Let him do it, Dani. Tell him okay, like it’s nothing to you,” Candy’s reassuring voice sounded in her ear. “If he gets out of line, I’ll move in, and then we’ll torture the sonofabitch to tell us where the fucking queen is.”
No words of encouragement came from Huxley.
“Okay, fine,” Dani said with a shrug. “Do you want me out of the car?”
“Please.” Matthew gestured. “Ladies first.” She got out and he followed, coming around from the driver’s side.
There would be nothing good about this frisk, but she stood her ground at the edge of a dark woods as Matthew patted her up and down, gritting her teeth when he spent far too long exploring between her legs. Instead of freaking out, she said what she imagined Candy would say.
“You want me to spread them a little wider so you can get a good feel, asshole?”
Matthew snapped to attention. “Well. Who expected that from you?” He looked her up and down with a new eye. “Looks like that good-for-nothing prick taught you a little something after all.” He seemed satisfied. “Back in the car, doll face.” He extracted his cell phone from his pocket and walked a few steps away toward the woods, while the backseat henchman made sure Dani complied. She was just glad Matthew hadn’t found her means of communication.
“Good job, Dani,” Candy’s voice sounded. “That should be the worst of it. Now I’ll follow you until we get closer to Kenmore Square before I let them see they have a tail. When I know I’ve been made, I’ll peel off and Huxley will take over, with me moving in behind him. Hang tight.”
Dani tried not to nibble her cuticles as Matthew, with his back to her, within the glow of a halogen streetlight spoke on the phone. He didn’t even pretend to hide his conversation from her.
“Yeah. She’s wired. So somebody’s following her, and if I had to bet, I’d say it’s the bitch who made the scene at the hospital this morning. Something about her said ‘cop’ to me. She’s in a late model sedan, a white rental. Don’t worry. I’ll lose her.”
Dani listened in horror. She needed to warn Candy and opened her mouth to do so, but a hand from the backseat covered it quickly. Dani wanted to gag. It smelled like stale onions and cigarette smoke. She heard the warning, “Not happening, Doc. Don’t even think about it,” the passenger said. She settled back in her seat, a whimper rising in her throat.
“Yup, got it,” Matthew replied into his phone. “I’m good at losing a tail.” He tucked the phone into his pocket and walked back to the car.
“Boss is happy to be expecting you,” he said casually to Dani as he got back into the car. “She likes the idea of a surgeon on staff.” His fingers came to the side of Dani’s breast where the microphone lay and pressed his palm against it hard, effectively blocking her communication. “Now I want you to be good and pretend we’re having a nice little conversation, or else I’m going to do more than throw off the bitch who’s following us. Do you get me?” Matthew asked. Dani nodded and he slowly removed his hand, indicating that the guy in the back should do the same with her mouth.
“I haven’t said yet that I’ll work with you.” Dani’s voice shook as she tried to act normally.
Matthew barked a laugh. “Oh, you will,” he said with certainty. “You will.”
He turned on the radio, and in a weirdly good voice, sang along with Bruce Springsteen’s Born to Run. Dani found no humor in the irony of it.
“Arbor Way,” Candy told Huxley, then sometime later, “Pond Street.” and several minutes after that, “Jamaica Way.”
They eased into Kenmore Square and Dani felt a trickle of sweat run down between her breasts. So far she’d done what they’d asked. Still, she worried. Her fears were confirmed when the sound of glass breaking invaded her mic’d ear, and then a “What the fuck?”
Candy’s voice went suddenly silent.
Dani still heard Huxley. “Candy. Candy, can you hear me? I’ll have a visual on you in a few. Shit.”
Dani wanted to ask what went down but couldn’t. They’d clearly known about Candy, but on the off chance that Huxley remained off their radar, she couldn’t alert him. She clenched and unclenched her hands. Matthew noticed and got downright cheery.
“So. You’ve lost contact with your girl.”
“You know I have, you bastard.” Dani sent horrified eyes to him. What had they done to Candy, and what would they do to her now that they knew she’d been playing them?
Matthew laughed. “Don’t worry. Our god friend Nedu will take very good care of her. Permanently.” He tapped the side of Dani’s face with a mock slap. “Although it wasn’t very nice of you to try and pull something over on us.”
“Dani, listen to me,” Huxley’s voice came low and frantic. “I heard Matthew, and
I have a visual on Candy’s car. Nedu has knocked Candy out and is now driving.” He groaned. “I have to follow. She’s as good as dead if I don’t stay on her, whereas you are valuable to them. They won’t kill you.” Dani closed her eyes. The rest of his thoughts remained unspoken. They wouldn’t kill her yet.
“I’m sorry, Dani.” Huxley sounded like his guts were being ripped out. At least he’d still be in her earpiece. Candy said they had unlimited range. Resigned, she settled back in her seat, but at the next red light, Matthew wrenched her head toward him, yanked her hair back and removed the bug in her ear. Before she could squeak, his hand reached up under her shirt, ripping her bra off with a violent tug. He brought it close to his nose and inhaled before throwing the bra, microphone, and earpiece out of the window.
“There. That’s in case anyone else is listening.” Matthew touched the gas as the light turned green, shoving Dani’s head down onto the car seat so she couldn’t see where he headed. “It seems like everything is going my way tonight,” he said smugly. “My Beletseri is going to be extra nice to me later.”
****
Huxley tailed the white vehicle with Candy aboard. He drove close enough to see it, but hopefully not close enough to be seen. He breathed frantically, trying to control his emotions. He’d been cut off from Dani and his heart beat wildly, knowing she was on her own. But he also understood that he remained Candy’s only chance of survival. An unknown to the bad guys, she might be considered expendable. Huxley quickly contacted the gods.
It’s not good. They found Dani’s wire and somehow got the jump on Candy before she knew they’d come after her. Dani’s now off the communications grid, and Candy is unconscious, being taken somewhere by Nedu.
I’m coming. Enlil’s voice brooked no argument. Tell me where you are.
I’m on Huntington Avenue, headed for the Pru. Huxley informed Enlil. But they’ll be able to detect your energy as soon as you’re out of the compound, he warned.
Enlil’s hard voice came back. If Nedu has Candy, and Matthew has Dani that means Beletseri is left to guard the queen. Even she wouldn’t risk losing her hostage to come after a stray god.
