Catching Fox Page 26

by Aimee McNeil

Quinlan widened his stance and ran his fingers through his hair before he started playing. Some of the strings protested and screamed in pain as he played but the intensity on his little face was priceless. He was in his zone and in his little world he was a rock star.

Pride swelled deep and true in Fox’s chest. He had learned long ago what was important in life and the little man standing in front of him with fierce determination to conquer music meant the world to him.

When Quinlan ended with his signature guitar shake and head nod, Fox stood and clapped before tapping his fist against his chest.

“Could you feel it?” Quinlan asked with wide eyes.

“I felt it all.” Fox beamed at his son before leaning down to kiss him on the top of his golden hair.

“How come you ’ave that picture wit your others?”

Fox turned in the direction Quinlan was pointing. A row of platinum records lined his wall in his home studio, displaying his musical accomplishments.

Quinlan was pointing to the frame with a worn letter inside. It was the letter that Adalynne’s father had written before he died.

“That letter is very important to Daddy because it made me realize that I didn’t need someone else to tell me I was good enough. I just needed to believe in myself.”

  “Why?”

“Because I wanted to love Mommy.”

“That’s funny. You do love Mommy.”

  “Always.”

When I grow up can I be a rock ‘tar like you?”

“Come here.” Fox picked Quinlan up and walked over to the window. They both looked out at the dark night sky. “See all those stars?”

  “Yeah.”

“Daddy loves Mommy so much that it shifted the stars and one came loose and fell down to earth. Do you know where it landed?”

  Quinlan shook his head.

“It landed in Mommy’s tummy and then you were born. You are already a star. You shine every time you smile.”

“Someone snuck out of bed, I see.”

Fox turned around to see Adalynne walk into the room. It never ceased to amaze him how breathtaking she was. She had owned him since the moment he walked into her life. “Hi babe, we were just looking at the stars.”

  “Daddy said I’m a ’tar.”

Adalynne smiled brightly at her son, the kind of smile that only a mother can give to her child. “You are,” she whispered before kissing his cheek. “Just like your daddy.”
