“Stupid bitch! I hope Bart devours her.”
Eric didn’t want to see how close they were now, so he opted to not look again. Instead he rolled backwards to create space, thinking that he would plant and attack from there. Rolling was easy enough but when he stood to plant his feet, his aching foot didn’t. It buckled, but it actually worked to Eric’s advantage. They were far too close for him to be able to do any damage in his current state, so he purposefully threw himself backwards again and allowed some of them to step and fall over him. The only problem with that plan was that a few realized it would be a much better idea just to fall on him and attack that way.
He felt several new wounds forming, and his injured ribs were beginning to make breathing a legitimate issue. Something had to change or he wouldn’t walk away from this. Bart was probably still in the back of the truck, wherever the bitch Sam had taken it. There was no one but himself, and he wasn’t doing well. Suddenly a memory of his dad popped into his mind.
So many great memories of his Dad’s sayings were etched in his memory, but this one had a little rougher flavor than most. He could almost hear him now, for fuck’s sake Eric, get off your lazy ass and fight!
It was a memory of his first karate tournaments and it had worked then just as well as it worked now. He began to throw elbows and knees as fast and hard as he could to make space. How many were around didn’t matter because only a few at a time could get to him. He focused on striking where he felt an attack began to work. A bite to his arm drew a sharp elbow, and gooey blood spewed from the assailant. A hand clawed at his leg and won a Nine Inch Nails shirt wearing zombie a knee to the chin that knocked him out of the fight. It went on this way until he eventually was able to kip up into a standing position.
It was then that he had the same adrenaline surge that had struck at the warehouse. His arms and legs were whirling death; striking so fast that he didn’t even have time to feel the pain of his injuries. If these fuckers killed him today, someone better remember the fight!
Finally he had enough clearance to unsheathe his sword. When he did, the herd began to clear fast. Three severed heads fell on one wide arced, swooping strike and two on the follow up. One came at him from behind so he reversed his grip and plunged it deeply into the zombie. Twisting the grip again, he stabbed one zombie, pushing him back to skewer two more with the same stabbing strike. He removed the sword then executed a side kick in one direction while slicing off a gross worm-infested head in the other direction. He moved like water, fluidly destroying and removing limbs from his attackers.
There was one remaining. He spun around and squared off with the insect infested looking zombie that had as gelatinous ooze pouring down his face. In the few moments it took to wait for the his approach made Eric realize how little he had left in his tank. There was no choice but to take the fight to him and he did just that. The oozing attacker vaulted into the air and sped quickly towards him, surprising Eric enough to allow his clawed fingers to dig into his ribs. Eric grunted in pain and twisted away, drawing his sword across the attacker’s side. It was a deep cut, but the zombie kept moving with blood oozing out of his abdomen. Eric was not quite as surprised this time by the extra powerful surge, so he kicked forward to stop him. He then ducked to clawing swipes and stood to slice the cockroach laden head clean from his shoulders. When the zombie dropped, Eric fell to his knees and propped himself on his sword. He was heaving breaths, his ankle was now very swollen and his ribs were very broken now. Every movement ached deeply as the adrenaline surge wore off and the pain returned. Blood was dripping down his sliced clothing from all of the wounds he had endured. It was so bad that he couldn’t even feel good about taking down so many fucking zombies in a handicapped fight.
Then a sound in the not too far distance made his blood boil and his heart sink. Slushy feet steadily walked through the paved area as he hung his head. There were at least four dozen more coming for him now. He stood on shaky legs, knowing that this difficult stand would be his lasting legacy to no one.
He wouldn’t go down without a fight.
He squared his stance and held his sword out to the coming throng.
As if directly from heaven, large rounds of ammunition began thumping from behind him and to the left. Zombies were being annihilated two or three at a time by the stunning barrage from the huge weapon. Eric paused in shock at the turn of events and collapsed to the ground before he could watch the rest of it. In his mind he knew what had to have happened, but he couldn’t allow himself to figure out how his truck had somehow come to his rescue.
The world came rushing back to him in a blaze of color before he realized he had fainted. Eric turned at the sound of Bart barking, and saw the large dog charging him. He figured any pounce by Bart might take him out of the conscious world again, but he was pleasantly surprised. His ankle and his ribs are all he could feel now. Neither of those was as bad as they had been before he lost consciousness. The faster than normal healing he continued to experience was still something he couldn’t get used to. When Bart let up, he looked to see the woman that had knocked him out of the truck standing in the bed of it now. Surprise didn’t really describe it. He was shocked to his core. Why would she save him?
She hopped out of the bed nimbly and strolled towards him. “What’s wrong tough guy? Some girl kick your ass?”
She was smiling widely, but Eric didn’t find it funny at all. He stand to glare at her.
“Well you don’t have to thank me immediately…”
Eric said, “Thank you? You kicked me out of my own truck and tried to leave me to die, and you want me to thank you?”
“Yeah that sounds a lot like what you were trying to do to me!” Sam snapped.
“It’s my truck!”
“So that makes it okay to leave someone to get stomped to death by zombies? Sam asked.
“You can ask yourself that question.”
She sighed and said nothing. That gave Eric a chance to see the truck. It had gone off the road and straddled a valley near where it sloped upwards towards the road. He nearly slapped Sam where she stood. “You must not realize that I am an authority on shitty liars. You were gone. The only reason you are still here is because the truck got stuck and you couldn’t get it out.”
“Okay,” Sam gave him that, “But I did save your life.”
“Bullshit! You knew the ones that ran through me would be on you in a G.I. second. You shooting them was to save your life, not mine!”
“Oh my god, you are such an asshole!”
“You’re still a manipulative bitch!”
She got closer to him, close enough for their chests to touch, “How bad do you want to kiss me right now?”
Eric grabbed her and kissed her full on the lips. He kept going for a solid minute before spinning her around and bumped the hilt of the sword on the back of her skull. She dropped like a sack of potatoes at his feet. Eric put his sword back in place, looked down and said, “Not as bad as I wanted to do that.”
He turned to walk towards his truck without looking back. It took several minutes to get it unstuck, but he was finally able to. The last he saw from the side window, Sam was still out cold in the grass. There were no zombies around for now, but he wasn’t about to take a chance for someone who tried to kill him; no matter how hot she was. Beside him in the seat, Bart barked aloud few times then hung his head out the window. Eric had to smile. Bart didn’t care about the woman at all, as long as he got his seat back. Eric drove on.
