“I’ve missed y’all too.”
“Well pushing it aren’t we. It’s almost midnight.” Peggy scolded her daughter knowing the two had been caught.
“Can we talk?” Jake asked kneeling next to Trent and whispering in his ear.
Trent simply nodded and stood.
The two walked to the farthest edge of the yard away from the noise of the chatter.
“I’m sorry I didn’t return your calls. I was scared.” Jake started out.
“I figured that much, but I really wanted to talk to you about it. You can’t run away when the problems seem too difficult. That’s not how families deal with problems.”
“I know. So what did you decide?”
“I didn’t accept the position. I told him I would assist with training and setting up the team, but that my family needed me here. I couldn’t uproot Maddie from her friends and her life just to move to Seattle, and I couldn’t leave you. I know we just met, but something feels so right about this and on Christmas when Maddie told you that she was glad that you spent the day with us because it made us feel more like a family. She wasn’t the only one feeling that way. I want to continue to build a life with you and in the future build a family with you –”
“I took the job with the magazine. I want you to know that before you said anything that might make you change your mind.”
“That wouldn’t change my mind about us. I want you to take that job because I know how much photography means to you, and if that’s what you want to do then I will support you.”
“It’s almost midnight!” Maddie yelled running up to them both. “You gotta kiss at midnight so you’ll spend the entire year together.” She informed.
“Is that what they say, little missy?” Jake asked scooping her up in his arms.
Maddie giggled all the way, “I knew Santa would give me what I wanted.”
“What was that Princess?” Trent asked.
“For you to be happy Uncle Trent I mean you’ve given up so much for me over the last few months. I asked Santa for you to get a boyfriend.”
Jake smiled at her sincerity, “That was sweet of you.”
“I think I got more than just a boyfriend, Princess. I think we got ourselves a family.”
Five…Four…Three…
Jake put Maddie down and his adoptive family counted down to midnight.
Two…One…
“Happy New Year!” the Franklins yelled and the sound of horns, whistles, and fireworks erupted in the background.
Trent and Jake didn’t hear a thing because the two were lost in their own world as they got their kiss at midnight.
The End.
