“Leif, you’re just in time!” Ria said, looking up as he rested a hand on her shoulder. Jesse carefully knelt down on the other side of her mother. “We have four new additions to the pack. River Stone here just gave birth to four new pups.”

The light grey mother looked up at him with clear blue eyes full of pride and exhaustion. “You mentioned she was pregnant some time ago but I thought you had said wolves only give birth in the spring.”

“Not only that,” Ria replied, obviously excited, “River isn’t the pack matriarch, she’s about three down the line behind Sunset, normally only the alpha and his mate have pups. I think they’ve finally taken to living with humans and become comfortable in an environment far more stable than they are used to. I think now the pack will grow far more rapidly, we may even be able to split it and send some to the other towns!”

“I’m sure the Mayors would love the idea, you should present it to them tomorrow.” Leif said, looked down at the silver ring on her finger, ever so slightly less radiant than it had been before that night, and felt his own, gently pulsing. He had been unable to shift fully since then and he was ok with that; this world was where he belonged, this was his life and he was happy.

Jesse gently picked up one of the pups; the only one completely covered in black fur and looked deeply into its dark grey eyes.

“I think this one’s name is Shadow.”
