Grantor, Baltimore and Ohio Railroad, for itself and its heirs, hereby covenants with Grantee, Olivia Elizabeth Overton, her heirs and assigns, convey said property to be found in Clinton County Virginia, (see Exhibit A) in sole ownership, execute this deed of trust, this day, 25th March, 1867.
She didn’t understand. “What does this mean?”
As Jackson jumped down from the buckboard, his laughter echoed all across the mountain. He reached up and pulled Olivia into his arms. “It means you own your farm, free and clear. Just you, not me, not the railroad, not anyone. Oh yes, and on the next page, it says that Aunt Bessie has a lifetime right of occupancy.”
“But, I thought.” Her heart was beating a mile a minute. This simply could not be true. She had no idea what to say so she said the first thing that came into her head. “I thought we were going to stay at Auntie’s cabin tonight.”
Jackson doubled over in laughter. Bessie smiled. “I been waiting fer you to see this fer months. That feller there is a good man.” She pointed toward Jackson with her pipe.
“Come see, my darling.” He held her by the hand as they walked the rest of the way together. Turning the corner, Olivia’s old home place came into view. In the place of Paw’s old, dilapidated cabin, a brand new, two-story framed farm house stood. It was covered with fresh white paint and topped by a shiny tin roof. Even the barn and corncrib had been re-done.
Olivia’s mouth dropped completely open. It was like a dream. Twenty or more hens scratched in the yard while a Rhode Island Red rooster kept watch. Olivia could even hear the low of several cows from the pasture.
“But.”
“Do you like it?”
“How?”
“I convinced the Baltimore and Ohio to take another route and purchased the land, then deeded it to you. This farm will always be yours. We can visit whenever you like, and when it gets hot in New York, we can spend the summer. Aunt Bessie has already moved in.” Jackson nodded toward Bessie who had taken a seat in a rocking chair on the front porch. “She will never have to work another day in her life. I’ve provided enough money for hired hands to work the farm while she sits on the front porch and smokes.”
On cue, Bessie took a deep pull and let out a series of perfect smoke rings. Jackson wrapped Olivia in his arms. She stood on her tiptoes and whispered in his ear. “Thank you, my darling, Yankee Jackdaw.”
He bent and whispered back, “You’re welcome my beautiful, wild turkey.”
