Apocalypse Ark Page 28

by Don Pendleton

“Leave quickly!” Marcellus snapped to their driver, and the limo started rolling. He was just beginning to relax when something altogether startling happened.

From the sky—or was it from a rooftop just ahead?—a blazing comet raced to meet them, smashed into the limousine’s windshield and filled the car with scorching flames before Marcellus could muster a scream.

MACK BOLAN HELD the empty rocket launcher for another moment, watching as the limo creaked and shuddered to a halt downrange, bright flames and oily smoke pouring from shattered windows. Nothing could survive inside that oven, any more than Halloran had managed to escape the van he’d detonated at the Vatican.

Job done? For Bolan’s part, at least.

He’d leave the scattered outposts of the cult to someone else, whether the powers that be opted to prosecute their leaders, simply make them disappear, or leave them fuming over dissolution of their sect in scandal and disgrace. The serpent’s head was severed. He could do no more in Rome—except, perhaps, to stop and light a candle for a fallen comrade.

  Would it make a difference?

He doubted it, but sometimes gestures were enough. Sometimes they were the best that anyone could do.

The following day, or the next, there would be another crisis. He would face another predator who hid behind religion, race or patriotic zeal to victimize the innocent. The adversary might be white, black, brown or yellow, but the constant would be odious corruption of his soul.

  Or hers.

For now, this time and place, the Executioner had done enough.
