Fael’s Universe
Yrrep prayed he would rematerialize in the right universe, on the correct world, and at the exact time needed. Anything was possible.
He transformed into a spark of light and entered the starweb. As he advanced across the dimensions of space and time, the connecting strings vibrated and distant universes shook from his movements.
Like a packet of soundless energy, he traced all that exist. His signal repeated itself at an infinite rate and at an infinite speed. Sometimes, he felt the illusion of substance on such a large scale that galaxies looked small.
Around and around he went, but it varied, ever so slightly, so that he never went to the same place twice. At moments, he appeared to be jumping in and out of the natural flow of cause and effect. Time and space enveloped him. His mind was everywhere and nowhere, its frequency strengthening itself.
When he arrived at the end of his journey, on a tiny planet Lavar called Earth U824, he looked back and saw that eternity was a very long way.
An instant later, he opened his eyes. His memory was hazy. His voyage felt like a bending of two realities. It had taken many millions of years to get here, and then again, it had only been a moment. It seemed a matter of perspective, like a long dream he knew was real.
The images from his universal wanderings and the concepts they invoked were still contorting his mind. It left a tingling sensation throughout his body that was fading rapidly.
His vision was blurred but he could smell the foreign nature of this alien environment. There was something… unclean about it. It seemed to be part of the atmosphere. As he inhaled deeply he could tell that it was nothing local. Rather, it seemed like a scent carried here from faraway; a sickness that had drifted on the wind and in the ocean currents. Something…putrid and combustible saturated this world and it had been this way for a long time.
The music of the ocean called to him, but its natural sounds gave a sour note as they mixed with the rotting smells of its toxic waters.
His heart filled with great compassion and he wondered- Can’t they see? What kind of people could’ve done this to their own world?
The answer to that question was easy, humans. The noble humans were an ancient race. In the distant future, they lived naked and free alongside the many other beings that shared his world TOL.
His vision cleared and he sat up. He was on a white sand beach that stretched as far as his eyes could see. The deep, blue ocean spread out before him in all her glory as wave upon sparkling wave heralded his arrival. Cliffs that reminded him of places at home, sat as feet from which great mountains sprang up in the distance.
There were no people around. However, he did sense animals swimming in the ocean. They were moving in the sand and hiding within the nooks and crannies of the rocks at the base of the cliffs.
The birds were calling but their song was strained and unkind. He wondered if any of these creatures understood how much they needed each other. They were all uneducated; the humans here did not qualify as good stewards…
He stood up and stretched his long legs and arms. They felt much lighter on this planet, and it tickled. This universe’s phase of expansion stretched the forces of energy too wide and weakened them. The universe his world existed in was experiencing the final stage of extreme compression. On his world, energy was so dense thoughts alone could produce physical effects. Because he had eaten from the Tree of Life, he possessed other, special-powers he could call upon when he needed them. Those powers would need to be tested, soon. This mission would require everything he had.
He felt dirty knowing that the thin layer of muck that now covered his body was slowly seeping into him. He could literally feel his pores expanding, letting more poison ooze into his body. And, it would not wash away in the ocean... it was there too. He recognized there were many things he would have to learn to ignore, if he was going to complete his mission. It all served to remind him that he was alone. He was truly the only one of his kind here.
Lavar had altered his body before sending him here, naked. The natives here would consider his height as an oddity and not his skin color, which would glow aqua in this sun’s light, and his pointed ears were now round. The shape of his slanted eyes, bright green hair and lean body, for the most part, remained the same.
The loneliness though… he was not expecting that to be the hardest part. He knew Elohim was with him though, Elohim is everywhere, and he had his memories of home; that would have to be enough.
Where to begin?
After a brief moment, he decided the high ground would be the best place to start. From there he would look for signs of the natives. He hoped to find a map or get directions from one of them; he could be anywhere. Before coming here, he knew that his exact destination would be impossible to predict, some l
aws of physics simply did not bend that far.
He jumped straight up into the air and focused all his attention on the energy around him, gathering and directing it under him to boost his physical exertion. The effect was less than stellar.
As he suspected, he would have only a quarter the ability he enjoyed in his own world. Still, what energy he could manipulate, coupled with the low gravity, gave him an extraordinary vertical leap.
It took him two running jumps and some adjustment time to reach the base of the nearest cliff. He leapt as high as he could, nearly thirty percent of the cliff’s total height and grabbed hold of some jutting rocks. Within moments, he was at the top of the cliff staring at the spine of a mountain range that went on endlessly in both directions.
Before him, lower to the ground and in-between mountains he saw something shimmering. He stared at it for a while trying to comprehend what he was seeing. He ran toward it and as he got closer, he saw what looked like a large glowing path or bridge, something he had read about in ancient history.
He had constructed energy bridges before. They looked a little like what he was seeing. A team of elves made bridges by focusing all their energy to produce an antigravity wave, like thick gel, that people or goods could pass over. What he saw before him looked like an energy bridge. He ran further, but stopped again as he thought, it is a glowing path!
It floated hundreds of feet above ground and ended in mid-extension, just on the horizon. He saw small points of light reaching up from the ground connecting to it at common intervals.
It was a good place to start. Without any more wasted time he ran as fast as he could, soaring over huge distances. As he got nearer, the light path grew into the horizon; it seems to have no end.
After running along the hilltops for several miles, he arrived at his first mountain. He quickly climbed over it and in a few jumps; he rapidly descended the other side. He slowed himself by drawing small cushions of air under his feet just before his weight settled onto the ground. The trip took him most of the day due to the many rugged mountains.
Just before dawn, he had made it to a cliff that overlooked a dirty town. It filled the valley, spilled into a thick jungle and spread out into the shadows of the coming night. The end of the light path hovered above it.
The sound of a loud bang echoed in his ear! Shouts and small explosions were coming from below! Quickly, he moved down the cliff and into the trees. He jumped from branch to branch, closing the distance to where the most noise was coming from. All the time he was careful to keep a thin membrane of negative gravitational energy between him and all living things. It would protect their delicate structures. He didn’t want to crush them with his enormous body. It was a hard task in this environment, and it took more stored energy than he was use to giving for such a common duty.
Perched on a branch where the trees met the edge of the village square, he watched and listened. Small humans were engaged in a battle. They were yelling to one another and at some unseen adversary as they shot pellets randomly into the jungle. The banging noise was coming from small metal objects they were holding in their hands.
He tried to find the common thread that could explain what was happening here. The whole thing looked like a mob of angry humans had gone mad. They screamed into the darkness, flashing lights, and firing wildly at anything that they could not identify.
He wondered, have they seen a ghost?
Quietly… carefully, he slipped out of the trees as he made his way to the closest building. He hugged the walls then leaped to the tiled rooftop where he tiptoed even closer to the center of the mayhem.
A young woman ran past the roof where he hid. No one else had noticed her. As she approached, he felt something coming from her. Twisted waves of dark emotion splashed across the walls of his mind. The image of her burned into his memory like a flash of lightning. The illumination was ugly.
She looked like a nightmare come to life. The robe she wore covered her black hair and her wide mouth gleamed with sharp, jagged teeth. When the illusion vanished, he saw her true self. She was gorgeous. She was taller and more beautiful than the other humans he saw here but she was much shorter than he was.
Remaining hidden, he listened to the messages she was inserting into the minds of the crazed village people. However, they were not reacting as she thought they would. She hesitated and reapplied her acts of terror but their responses didn’t change. She seemed confused at this, as if this rarely happened. Something about these people was slowing her ability to manipulate their senses.
She was too fast- moving quicker than any human here- if she was human. Long ago, he had observed something spying on his world that acted like her, but she was beautiful and they were beastly.
She drew near the people again, appearing not to want a direct confrontation, rather; she was trying several different tactics to get these people to do…something. He thought she might want them to leave the village.
She was using the cover of darkness expertly. Unseen, she slipped in among the streetwalkers and touched them lightly on the arms, whispering ghastly sounds into their ears. Again and again, she projected the sharp-toothed image of her as a shrieking banshee. Women screamed as they searched for the origins of their nightmare. Men cried savagely at the invisible foe. When they all were on the edge of losing their mind’s she dissolved into the shadows.
For a time, all was calm. She had disappeared. After hours passed and their guard was down, she came screeching again sending her horrible, mental energy into the crowd and frightening everyone nearly to death.
He feared for the old ones. He had seen enough. He slid down into the closest shadow, and waited. Then as her black form approached, he quickly stretched out his long leg and tripped her then hid behind the building, watching.
She tumbled, giving a high-pitched scream as her momentum sent her crashing through the bushes and plunging into the stick and mud wall of a nearby building! With a moan, she came to a complete stop. Children rushed out of the small building as if it were on fire!
The feeling of despair stopped. She staggered out of the doorway holding a hand to her head. A look of shock kept her standing in place as she tried to find what had tripped her. In her dismay, she failed to notice a man dressed all in black but for a small white square at his neck, approach her and yell. Yrrep could barely understand what he was saying. He didn’t recognize the language he was screaming; however, the threat was clear. The man pointed a cross at her and commanded her to leave with exaggerated gestures. It took Yrrep a moment to identify the old symbol he was holding. It was a reminder of the Ancient Christ!
Instantly his words became clear. He was shouting, “The power of Christ compels you!” The old man thinks she’s a ghost!
In a flash, the woman withdrew a curved sword from the folds of her coverings and cut his hand off! The hand, still holding the cross, fell to the ground. She continued the swing of her blade, intending to slice off his head! Without hesitation, Yrrep launched himself at her, catching the sword wielding hand, altering her downward motion as he disarmed and tossed her nearly twenty yards into the jungle!
She gave another cry as she struck a tree. The trunk wobbled sending a wave of motion quivering throughout the leaves. He waited with her sword in his hand, sending his energy into it. The blade began to shine until it erupted into flames.
She quickly stood up and he heard her coming, faster than before. In her hand was another blade that gleamed under the yellow light path. She struck at him with great force, but he easily parried the blow, stuck out his long foot and again she tumbled to the ground.
