By the time Dale had circled around to the other end of the camp, I felt relaxed again. Their deaths were not necessary, not yet at least. They posed no threat to me.
So I retreated and slept for about three hours, then returned later to watch them pack up and leave. Ever since, I allowed the distance to increase – heading off on my own adventures to explore through ruins and old farmhouses, trying to replenish my supplies, add to my collections. Whenever I found a mutate getting too close to the group, I despatched it, resisting the urge to travel ahead and place the dead mutates in their path. They didn’t need to know I was still around. I didn’t need to deviate them from their path.
The tsunami had to keep rolling. It had to crash somewhere.
