“Thank you.”
“But I do think it would be a good idea if I helped you learn how to give a good shout out.”
Danielle looked up at Walt. “What do you mean?”
“So you can wake yourself up when needed, in case some other unwelcome spirit hops in your dream. Lily suggested it. She’s actually quite good at it. Can wake herself right up.”
“You mean now?”
“Unless you’d rather do it another time.”
Danielle absently toyed with a lock of her hair. “Maybe another time. I don’t want to wake up right now.”
Walt silently studied Danielle. Finally, he said, “I understand. I’ll go and let you sleep; you need your rest. We can talk later. I just wanted to make sure you were okay.”
“Wait!” Danielle looked up into Walt’s eyes.
“What?”
“Don’t go yet.”
“Okay. We can just sit here quietly if you want.”
“Do you think…” Danielle looked down at her lap and took a deep breath.
“Do I think what?” Walt asked, his voice gentle.
Danielle looked back up at Walt. “Would it be possible…could you just hold me? I need someone to hold me…” I need you to hold me.
Without another word, Walt gathered Danielle up in his arms. Closing his eyes, he held her, as he looked out to the ocean and watched the sea make its way toward them and then retreat, in a steady and constant rhythm.
