“Just a few steps more,” he whispered.
The chill of the evening air blew over her. They were outside. But where? Liz heard traffic in the distance, but no other sounds. She searched for whispers of onlookers, but heard none. They were somewhere alone.
“Can I take it off?” She anxiously held her hands on the silk scarf.
“Almost. Not yet.” Oscar’s voice was strong and loving behind her ear. “I have something to tell you first.” He turned her to him and she felt him staring into her eyes even with the blindfold on. “Before you walked into the Buckeye, I’d never had the pleasure to know a woman quite as beautiful as you. You’re extraordinary Liz. Both on the inside and the outside and I’m humbled that you chose me.”
Tears were forming and Liz tried to hold them back. She squeezed the sides of the fabric blocking her view of the man she loved. “Let me look now.”
She felt him step behind her and position her by the shoulders. “Count to ten.”
She did and pulled the scarf down to hang around her neck. She opened her eyes and in front of her was a delighted sunset painting the sky in red and orange hues. The view took her breath away.
“Do you love it?” Oscar asked from behind her.
She turned and he wasn’t on one knee, but he didn’t need to be. Not yet. “I love you. Serving drinks at the Buckeye, giving kisses to your Nana, protecting your daughter, laughing with your friends, or building a billion dollar company. Everything that you do I want to be by your side while your experience it.” She breathed his air, caressed his lips, and gave herself to him to love, unconditionally.
Oscar pledged his unconditional love to her too. They stood in each other’s arms enthralled in their love until the sun dipped completely down into the horizon. When the blackness of the night came, they hopped in the truck and drove to the Buckeye, returning to where it all began.

A Second Chance Prequel
DESTINY’S GLANCE
The Buckeye Series
By Jo Henley
Liz’s second chance romance with Oscar began months prior to her stepping foot in the Buckeye Bar. She was in a loveless marriage and hurtling full speed toward divorce papers. A day at her parent’s house with her entire family proved too much for her self-absorbed husband, Chris. At the end of the evening he choose to wait in the car with the engine running. Before Liz could finish her goodbyes and join him, a sexy stranger inadvertently inserted himself into her life.
A red truck drove slowly, waiting for the minivan to pass. It inched in front of my field of vision and stopped at the house across the street. I locked eyes with the driver of the pickup.
He leaned an elbow out and turned back over his shoulder to me. A smile crept across his face. I mindlessly walked toward the unintentionally seductive smile of the driver. My toes inching off the curb, I shifted toward the man in the truck.
“Thanks for the ride,” Bill, my friend since high school said from his yard across the street. “Oh hey, Liz,” Bill said in my direction before opening the passenger door of the pickup and hopping in the cab.
He must have waved bye, but I didn’t see it. All I saw was the polite head nod in my direction from the driver. An invitation? My heart jumped with excitement and I stepped off into the street, hoping to be introduced.
“Get in the car!” Chris yelled, laying heavy on the horn.
My gaze ripped back to reality and to my husband, throwing his hands up in disgust.
The stranger in the red truck stepped on the gas and drove away, taking with him the fantasy that a sexy, good ol’ boy type of man could exist in my life.
Liz’s glimpse of Oscar consisted of seconds, but his impression stayed in her thoughts long after that fateful evening. She fantasized all summer about the kind of man who would remind her how love was supposed to feel.
