Harriet heard the two men speaking in hushed tones on the boardwalk as she exited the mercantile. It didn’t surprise her that Jackson Davis would whisper behind her back—the banker in town, it seemed he had very little to say to any woman. But why was Jason whispering? Sundown’s sheriff, he was usually quite polite and conversational. She turned her head to look over her shoulder and almost stopped walking, but decided whatever they were discussing didn’t matter. She had chores and the children would be home from school soon.
She strolled on, but a moment later, Jason called her name. She slowed and turned. “Good afternoon, Jason.”
“Afternoon, Harriet.”
He was a stunningly tall, good looking man. Warm, blue eyes that seemed to caress your skin and a gleaming white smile had every unmarried—well, and married—female in town at least daydreaming about him. Except for Harriet. Her beloved husband Henry had soured her on love, romance, and all the fairy tales associated with happily-ever-afters.
“Um,” Jason tugged off his dusty Stetson, revealing slightly sweaty, curly blond hair. “I was just wondering if you’d seen Henry in the last few days.”
The mere fact that he asked if she’d seen her own husband recently spoke volumes about what folks knew of her married life. No secrets in a small town. “Not in a week or so.”
“A week? Is that normal?”
She shrugged and tried to keep any shame from her expression. “Not unheard of.” Jason rubbed his chin, glanced back at the mercantile. Jackson Davis ducked inside, as if he hadn’t been watching. Harriet narrowed her eyes at Jason. “Something going on I need to know about?”
Jason fluttered his lips in apparent indecision, but after a moment, he shook his head. “No. Nothing.” He pursed his lips like he wasn’t happy with that answer. “Soon as he shows up, you’ll tell him to find me or see Jackson?”
Harriet crossed her arms and drummed her fingers, debating how concerned she should be. It didn’t seem likely Jason was going to give her any more information. She cast a glance at the mercantile. Davis definitely wouldn’t discuss anything with her. Henry probably owed a debt somewhere. Long as they didn’t try to collect from her; of course, that was a possibility. Her money, according to territorial law, was more Henry’s than hers—even though she’d certainly done more of the work around the ranch to earn it. “I should be worried, shouldn’t I.” It was not a question.
Jason heaved a deep sigh and his brow furrowed with an honest expression of grief. “I’m sorry, Harriet, I can’t discuss it with you. You’ll send Henry our way, soon as you see him?”
“Soon as I see him.”
