  “We’ll get her, sir.”

Abel laughed. “You know, you guys keep telling me that. You keep saying that you’ll get her, except you don’t. You can’t. You keep letting her get away.”

  “She’s highly trained, sir.”

“I know that!” Abel shouted. “I fucking know that! I trained her. You guys trained her. And now, she’s using everything she learned, to get away from here. Away from me. She’s going to ruin everything. This is a complete disaster!”

“How is she going to ruin everything, sir? She’s nowhere near the facility.”

“Because, she’s out there, you idiot!” Abel shouted. “She’s out there in the world she hasn’t stepped foot in, in over eight years! She’s out there surrounded by people, and if she talks to the wrong people I’m done for. My father’s legacy is done for. The organization will be no more. Everything will be gone. I’ll have nothing. And that’s exactly what she wants.”

He raised his head, staring at the screen.

  His arm pulsed in pain.

  He stared down at it.

Staring at where she’d shot him.

A smile spreading across his face.

Elena had done this, he thought to himself.

  She had balls.

  She had no fear.

And she wasn’t afraid to do whatever she had to do to survive.

  He had taught her that.

And now, it was coming to bite him in the ass.

The smile disappeared from his face.

His hand wrapped around the knife that sat on the desk, and he plunged it into his arm.

  “Sir!”

He turned his head, the knife in his arm.

“What are you doing?” one of the men whispered.

“I have to get the bullet out.” He felt the blade hit the bullet. He slid the knife out, grabbing the tweezers that sat next to him. “And you’re going to help me.” He gestured one of the men forward.

“I-I don’t think this is a good idea, sir.” The man stuttered.

“I don’t care what you think!” Abel snapped. “I don’t pay you to think! I pay you for action and right now, I want you to pull the fucking bullet out of my fucking arm!”

  The man’s face paled.

He took the tweezers from Abel’s hand, and plunged them into the wound. Pulling the bullet out. Blood spurting from his arm.

“Oh God.” The man stumbled backward, the bullet falling to the floor. “I’m going to puke.”

He turned, vomiting all over the floor.

“You stupid, fucking pansy!” Abel shouted, staring at him. “How can you capture Elena, when you can’t even stand the sight of blood?” He grabbed the knife that lay on the desk, and threw it in the air.

It hit the man right in the throat.

He sputtered, stumbling backwards, his back hitting the wall with a thud just before he slumped to the ground. Blood sputtering from his mouth.

“You all are disgraces to the organization!” he shouted. “Look at Elena. She’s not afraid of anything. She’s not afraid to kill any of you. She’s already killed how much of our family? Are you really going to let her take any more from us?”

  The men shook their heads.

  “No, sir.”

“Than do me a favor, and go out there and get her!” Abel shouted, rising from his chair. He held a hand to his arm, and walked across the room, pushing a button.

“Just look at them.” He whispered, staring through the mirror as it flipped. Staring out below him at the girls training. “They’re so eager to please. So eager to do whatever I ask them to do. Thanks to the serum that we developed. Keeping them compliant. It was the only way to get them to do what I wanted them to do.” He shook his head. “When they first came here no one wanted to help me. No one wanted to help me with my plan. So instead, I found a way to make them help me.” He smiled. “Elena used to be like this. She was so good. She was my most dangerous weapon. I still don’t understand how she was able to break out of it.”

  “She has dreams.”

  “She has wishes.”

  “She has hope.”

  “She has a strong heart.”

  “She believes.”

“That’s all a load of bull shit!” Abel shouted, slamming his hand against the button, turning his head, staring at the men behind him. “Hope is the human weakness. Belief, that’s a human weakness. Dreams. Wishes. They’re not real and anyone who believes in them won’t survive in the new world.” He stared at them. “But now that Elena has her memories back, she’s going to do what she can to stop my plans, and now, the game has changed boys. Now, instead of bringing her back alive, the next time you see her I want you to kill her! Now go!”

The men turned and raced out of the room.

  Abel stared at the door.

Crossing to the desk, grasping the roll of gauze that lay there, and wrapped it around his arm.

Come this time tomorrow, Elena would be dead.

She wouldn’t give him any more trouble.

And she would not ruin his plans.

  He dropped into the chair.

  Staring at the screen.

He had worked so hard to get the organization back up and running.

He had worked so hard to set in motion the plans his father had laid out years ago.

And he would not let anything stop him.

He would not let anyone stop him.

And anyone who got in his way, would pay the ultimate price.

  Their life.

  Chapter Eight

“Abel is going to be so disappointed in you Elena.”

The voice echoed in her head.

  Oh God.

Elena jerked her head up. Trying desperately to open her eyes but she couldn’t. They were so heavy.

  She gasped.

Oh God. Oh God. Oh God.

  Her arms flung around frantically.

Her breath came out in gasps.

She tried opening her eyes again.

This time, they peeped open, and she blinked. Blinking rapidly as she stared up at the bright lights that beamed down on her.

“Who are you?” she managed to gasp out, her eyes finally adjusting to the lighting, and staring at a man and woman who were standing next to the bed, staring at her. “Where am I?”

“Well you’re in the hospital, sweetie.” The woman told her, sending her a smile. “A hospital that Abel owns.” She smiled again. “And we are the ones who are going to bring you back home.”

Elena felt the blood drain from her face.

No, she thought to herself, shaking her head. No! She couldn’t go back! She couldn’t!

“I’m not going back.” She managed to get out, her voice hoarse and she winced. Her throat was so dry. She felt her eyes watering. They felt as if they were made of sandpaper. What was wrong with her? Why was she feeling like this? Why was she feeling so unlike herself? Had they drugged her?

“Do you really think you have a choice, Elena?” the woman whispered, a laugh escaping her throat. “He owns this place, Elena. He owns you. He owns us. He owns everything. There’s no escaping him he’s everywhere, and he wants you. He wants you right where you belong. At his side.”

  “He owns this place.”

The words echoed in her head.

  She jerked her head up.

“He owns the hospital?” she asked, her brain finally catching up. “Since when has he owned a freaking hospital?”

“Oh, Elena, the things you don’t know about Abel and the organization.” The man whispered the words, a smile crossing his face, his crooked teeth showing. “Abel is a lot of things, Elena. A lot of people believe in him. Believe in his father. He’s everywhere, Elena, and you will never escape him. Never.” And he raised his hand, showing her the needle that lay in his hand. “And it will be my pleasure to bring you back to where you belong.” His hand plunged forward.

  Elena started.

  A gasp escaped her throat.

  She jerke
d upright in the bed.

  She tried to move.

The IV in her arm jerked.

She winced, turning her head, watching as the needle came closer.

She gritted her teeth, and lunged sideways.

Her body rolled off the bed.

Just missing the needle, and she hit the floor with a thump.

  She scrambled to her knees.

  She felt her vision blurring.

She felt her head throb. God did her head hurt, she thought to herself, rising to her knees. Lifting her head, watching as a blurred figure raced towards her.

She screamed, trying to scramble away.

And she felt thin arms wrap around her so tightly she could barely breathe.

“You’re lucky that snake bite didn’t kill you, Elena.” She heard the woman’s voice echo in her ear. She felt her breath on her skin. “You were almost dead when they brought you in. So pale, shaking like crazy, and looking like death.” She laughed. “But you’re tough, Elena. You’re tough like all of Abel’s soldiers.” She turned her head. “Roy, now!”

The needle flew across the room, the woman catching it in the palm of her hand.

This was it, Elena thought to herself. She had to act now, or she would surely be dragged back to Abel and the organization.

And she brought her head back hard.

The top of her head connected with the woman’s chin.

  She heard her gasp.

  Her arms loosened around her.

She lifted her hands, prying the woman’s hands free from her waist. Turning, and slamming her fist into the woman’s face.

“I am not going back there!” she shouted, jerking the IV from her arm and jumping to her feet. She reached down, grabbing the woman by the shoulders, and throwing her across the room. Watching as she crumbled to the floor.

A cry of outrage escaped Elena’s throat.

She raced across the room, grabbing the woman by the arms. Pulling her to her feet.

“Get up you stupid, Cunt!” she screamed slamming the woman into the wall and staring into her wide eyes. “Look at me!” she cupped the woman’s chin in her hand. “I’ve been through hell. I’ve lost my mother. I’ve been drugged and trained to kill by my own father. I’ve lost my sisters. I’ve lost everything! And for what? So that my father can build a better world?” A chuckle escaped her mouth. “A better world? Who am I kidding? He’s not going to build a better world. He’s going to wreak anarchy. He’s going to destroy everything. There won’t be a world left for anyone! There will be nothing left except ashes. The world is just going to be a huge ass cemetery full of the remains of what the world once was. He needs to be stopped. He needs to be destroyed, and I’ll be damned if I return to the organization before I’m good and ready. Before I’m ready to destroy it.”

“You’ll never be able to destroy it.” The woman whispered. “You’ll never get that far. Too many people believe in Abel. They believe in what he’s doing. They’ll stand by him, and kill you before you even get close to him. He’s untouchable.”

“The hell he is!” Elena snapped. “And I swear I will destroy him if it’s the last thing I do!”

Red flashed in front of her eyes.

She thought of all the people that would be killed.

Of all the children who would never be able to live their lives to the fullest.

  She thought of herself.

Of all the dreams she’d had for herself.

  She thought of her sisters.

How they would never be able to see the world.

A cry of outrage escaped her throat.

And she slammed the woman’s head hard against the wall.

  She crumbled to the ground.

  “Nina!”

  She turned her head.

The man raced towards her, wrapping his arms around her, pulling her away from the woman.

“No!” she screamed, as he pulled her away. Struggling against him. “Let me go! Let me go! I’m not going back there! I won’t!”

“Do you really think you have a choice, Elena?” the man laughed, whispering in her ear. “Come on, Elena, you never had a choice. Never. Not once in the last eight years. Not since you were first brought into the organization. Abel had such high hopes for you. You were so strong. The best soldier he ever had. You were his most dangerous weapon. You were the one he was going to have standing by his side, but now everything’s changed, Elena.” He held up his hand, showing his phone to her. “You see, twenty-four hours ago he wanted us to bring you back alive, but now the rules of the game have changed, Elena. Now, he wants you dead.” He tossed the phone on the bed. “And there’s nothing like a high dose of morphine to get that started.” He smiled, withdrawing a needle from behind his back. “What will the world think? Elena Rodriquez, a junkie.” He laughed. “Good bye, Elena, it was nice knowing you.” And the needle came towards her.”

  Oh God.

Elena gasped. Struggling against his grasp.

  His grip was too tight.

  She felt her throat tighten.

Her heartbeat kicked up a beat.

She watched the needle come closer.

She didn’t want to die, she suddenly realized. She kept saying that she had nothing left to live for. That she had lost everything. That nothing more could possibly be taken from her. But she was wrong. She still had herself. She still had her own life yet to lose. And she suddenly realized, that if she wanted to save the world from becoming a mass gravesite she had to be alive to help save it. She couldn’t die!

She struggled against him one more.

  The needle was so close.

She could see the liquid at the edge of the tip.

And out of the corner of her eye, a streak of black came racing into the room.

She lifted her head, watching as a man suddenly appeared before her, grabbing Roy, and pulling him away from her.

She stumbled backwards, tumbling to the ground, watching as the man slammed Roy against the wall.

“Didn’t anyone ever tell you it’s not nice to inject people with needles?” the man muttered between clenched teeth. “There’s a reason I hate hospitals, you know. Everyone here is just so unpleasant, and one thing is for sure. Your bedside manner could definitely use a little work.” He raised his fist, slamming it into the man’s face.

  The man’s head jerked back.

  “Let him go!”

Nina jumped up from where she was leaning against the wall, and raced towards him.

  “Watch out!” Elena screamed.

The man turned. His arm snaking out. Throwing her to the ground.

“You’re pathetic.” He whispered, staring at her with cold eyes. “And you have no soul.” He whispered.

“You’re the pathetic one.” Nina whispered. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

“Oh I have a pretty good idea.” The man whispered.

“You don’t.” Nina whispered. “You’re just a man. A man with no balls.” She whispered, lunging towards him.

  The man dodged her.

And Nina skidded to a stop, turning, and lunging towards him once again.

She raised her hands, clawing at his face.

  “You bitch!”

The man stumbled back, staring at her, scratches running down his face.

And he lunged forward, grabbing her by the waist, throwing her against the wall.

“Don’t you people get it?” He whispered, staring at her. “Don’t you people freaking get it? There is no room for people like you in this world. You’re all pathetic. You’re all pigs. And you all need to be put down before you infect everyone else.” He raised his hand, a gun lying there. “And I’m all too happy to do the honors.” And he pulled the trigger.

Elena jumped, the sound of the gunshot echoing in her ears.

And she watched, as the bullet flew across the room, and hit Nina right in the middle of the forehead.

  Nina’s body jerked.

  Her eyes widened.
/>
And she slumped against the wall, sliding to the floor completely motionless.

“Nina!” Roy jumped to his feet, turning his head staring at the man. “You son of a bitch! You killed her! You killed her!” And he lunged forward, grabbing the man by the shoulders and throwing him to the ground. “I’m going to kill you!”

Elena screamed, watching as they tumbled to the ground.

  Watching as they exchanged punches.

Wincing as Roy hit the man hard in the face.

She saw blood spurt from the man’s nose.

Then he grabbed Roy, slamming him to the floor.

“You’re not going to kill me.” The man whispered.

“That’s where you’re wrong!” Roy shouted, his knee striking up. Striking the man in the midsection.

  The man stumbled backwards.

Roy lunged towards him again, this time his hands wrapping around the man’s throat, slamming him against the wall. “You killed the woman I love!”

  “You’re not capable of love.”

  Roy’s face turned red.

His head butted forward, slamming it against the man’s head.

“No!” Elena screamed. Oh God. Oh God. She had to help him! Roy was going to kill him!

She turned her head, searching around the room frantically.

And her eyes landed on the syringe lying on the floor next to her.

She wrapped her hand around it.

  Staring at it.

  Almost 100 milliliters of morphine.

  She gulped.

It would be enough to kill her.

  She lifted her head.

Watching as Roy’s hands tightened around the man’s neck.

“Hey, Roy!” she jumped to her feet.

  He turned his head.

“Did you forget about me?” she asked, a smile spreading across her face. “The one you’re supposed to kill?”

  A scream escaped Roy’s lips.

He turned, racing across the room.

Elena dodged his outstretched hands, spinning on her heel, lifting her hand and plunged the needle into the side of his neck.

“Goodbye, Asshole.” She whispered, her finger pushing the plunger.

  . His eyes widened.

  He stared at her.

  His knees shook.

And he fell to the ground, on his knees. He raised his head, staring up at her.

“Please.” He whispered hoarsely. “Please don’t do this. Please don’t kill me.”
