None of her sisters were.
She broke free of her sisters, and walked up to Kieran, clasping her hand with his.
“Where are they going?” she whispered.
“To a facility, where they can become civilized human being again.” Gloria told her. “And then they’ll be released out into the world again.”
“You really think they can have a normal life?”
“I do.” Gloria whispered. “Don’t you?”
“Yes.” Elena whispered. “Yes I do.”
“And what about you?” Gloria asked. “What are you going to do with your life?”
Elena smiled, looking up at Kieran. “I think, I’m going back to school. I think I’m going to do what I’ve always wanted. Become a doctor.”
“But before that, the five of us are going to do something else.” Kieran informed her.
“Oh, what’s that?”
“We’re going to go see the world!” he cried, grasping her by the waist, and lifting her in his arms.
Elena gasped, wrapping her arms around his neck.
A laugh escaping her lips.
“Just think.” Kieran whispered in her ear. “This is what it will be like when I carry you over the threshold when we are married.”
“You are completely insane!” Elena cried, as he climbed up the steps of the plane.
He dropped her to her feet.
And she stood up there, staring up at him. “But I love you anyways.” She whispered, rising up on her toes and kissing him on the lips.
Kieran smiled against her lips.
“I like the sound of that.” He whispered. “Because I love you too.” He whispered, pulling her closer to him.
Below them they heard a groan.
Kieran lifted a hand.
“Shut up, Luis.” He muttered, staring down at Elena. “Just shut up and let me kiss my girl.”
“Yes. Let him kiss his girl.” Elena whispered, squealing, as he lifted her up in his arms again and feeling like the luckiest girl in the world.
Epilogue
Ten years later
The sound of squeals echoed in her ears.
She jerked her head up.
Watching as her five boys raced across the lawn.
“Boys! Be careful!” she cried, stepping out on the deck of the new home they’d built years ago.
She sighed. Holding a hand to her stomach. Feeling the baby kick inside of her.
It had finally happened.
Her life was as she wanted.
She had five, gorgeous young boys, with one on the way.
She had a gorgeous house.
And a husband who would always be there for her.
She held a hand to her heart, and stared down at the envelope that lay in her hand.
From the prison.
He wanted her to visit him.
A scowl formed over her face
And she felt her throat tighten.
Even from miles away, he still had a way of getting to her, but if one thing was for sure her boys would never know what kind of a monster their grandfather was.
They would never know of him.
And he would never know of them.
“Go to hell, you bastard.” She whispered, walking down the step and out into the yard.
She walked down the hill, stopping in front of the ocean.
She crumbled the paper into a ball, and threw it into the water.
“Good bye.” She whispered out into the ocean. “Good bye forever.”
“I’ll be seeing you, Elena.”
The words echoed inside his head.
A smile spread across his face.
And he picked up the pencil, watching as the first mark hit the page, ignoring the guard who stood just behind him in his cell.
Ten years had gone by.
And he hadn’t seen Elena.
He hadn’t heard from her.
But he wasn’t going to stop trying.
He was going to keep trying.
He had to see her. He had to!
The pencil hit the paper.
My Dear Elena,
I know that things have always been difficult between us. They’ve always been hard and we have never quite seen eye to eye. But what I have done, it is in the past. I was sick back then. I wasn’t myself, and I forgot what it was like to have a family, and what I did to you. To the girls, well, I had my reasons but I need you to know that I never stopped loving you and I always cared about all of you. Even on my darkest days, and now, I would like a chance to see you. A chance to look into your eyes and tell you just how sorry I am. For you are my daughter, and I want to see you. Please come see me, before it’s too late.
Love Always,
Abel
He set down the pencil, and folded the paper, handing it to the guard.
The guard took it from him, and walked out, the slam of the door echoing in his ears.
He rose to his feet. Walking towards the bed. Staring at the wall, of his ten children.
And a smile crossed his face.
“The time is coming, girls.” He whispered into the silence. “I’m coming for you.”
