A Demon for Midwinter Page 30

by K. L. Noone

—Marianne May’s name is a combination of references to, respectively, Boston and Rod Stewart songs

—Tommy, the third member of Starrlight, is also a reference to The Who, as is Kris’s middle name (which is Peter)

—There are quite a few nods to other bands, some no doubt ridiculously obvious and some less so. Justin’s laptop with its Phantom Fighter stickers, and his Arbor Dei poster, are some examples, but there are many more…

Justin’s family and the kitchen inventions and stovetop physics all contain a very, very small nod to Meg Murry’s family and the making of hot chocolate over Bunsen burners in A Wrinkle in Time. I read L’Engle’s books many times over as a child, and always found myself captivated by the sheer scope of imagination coupled with the power of love.

Finally, like all my stories, and probably more than most, A Demon for Midwinter has a soundtrack. Here are a few of the songs:

The Rolling Stones, “Start Me Up”

Joan Jett, “I Love Rock and Roll”

The New York Dolls, “Lonely Planet Boy”

The Pixies, “Here Comes Your Man”

  Vampire Weekend, “Oxford Comma”

  Def Leppard, “Photograph”

The Struts, “Could Have Been Me”

  Aerosmith, “Amazing”

REO Speedwagon, “Can’t Fight this Feeling”

  Whitesnake, “Is This Love”

  Green Day, “Youngblood”

  Boston, “Rock And Roll Band”

  Journey, “Don’t Stop Believin’”

And as an NSFW but wonderfully silly and seasonally appropriate bonus:

  Pansy Division, “Homo Christmas”

  Enjoy!
