What If Page 23

by Shirley Anne Edwards

I nodded and took a deep breath. He was right. I could do this.

“Let’s ride around one more time, and then I’ll shoot down the hill.”

I pedaled, and he did the same next to me. We rode side-by-side, turning and twisting up and down the road that led us to the top of the hill.

Swerving off the road, my tires met grass, and I zoomed down the hill. The bumpy ground jolted me, but I held onto his hand and yelled. I let go of the handlebar, spread out my arms, and enjoyed the rush of the air whipping against my face.

I released his hand, lifting my face up to the sky, and shouted, free and happy.

His yells echoed in my ears, and when I reached the bottom, he twisted his bike around and lifted his legs in the air but didn’t stop. He didn’t wait for me like those countless times before where he cheered and did his victory dance.

He kept biking until he vanished from my sight.

Grabbing onto my handlebars, I clutched the break. I panted, got off the bike, and stared off in the distance where I’d last seen Pete. He didn’t wave or applaud…just biked away until I couldn’t see him anymore.

I knew he was proud of me. I’d finally conquered my fear and raced down the hill.

  It felt fantastic.

For once, I could say I really deserved the nickname—Wonder Woman.

No more what ifs. Pete taught me that.

Tonight, when I wrote in my journal, I’d write just that.

  No more what ifs….
