"That was..."
"Amazing," Jared finished.
Elizabeth giggled and nodded. "Epic is the word I was going for, but amazing works."
As they lay there, enjoying their post-coital bliss, she realized she had to tell him her plan. To go and finish it. As she sat up in his lap, she steeled her spine and she turned to him.
"Jared, we need to talk—" Splintering wood flying through the room halted her words.
On a shout she turned and was rendered speechless. A very large, very pissed-off Asmodeus towered over them both. He wasn't alone. Fisted in his hand was a huge blade like something out of Lord of the Rings. As she swallowed against the fear, she lifted her palms up in surrender, entirely prepared to go with him.
"Look, I needed—"
"Silence!" he roared.
The force of his yell rattled the windows. Elizabeth snapped her mouth shut.
"Over and over again you push me, little one. Well, you have pushed me too far this time. Tainting yourself with this—angel!" He snarled the word like it was vomit in his mouth.
Wait, angel? Wait a minute.
Elizabeth got to her knees, blocking Jared's body, even as he tried to pull her out of the way by her naked hips. The very real knowledge that she was naked settled on her. She didn't have time; she had to defuse the situation and get Asmodeus away from Jared.
"Well, punishments are a harsh lesson, my dear."
Elizabeth realized he was raising the blade. It gleamed off the sunlight streaming through the window. Everything moved in slow motion as she moved in front of Jared, her back to him. He ignored her screams of protest, and Jared's of pure rage. That blade never stopped. Instead, it continued on until it sliced through her shoulder like warm butter. The pain was enormous. Fire blazed through the entry wound and consumed her body as she screamed.
Her eyes closed and she grabbed the sword, chanting Jared's name. She flicked her eyes open as Asmodeus left the room. He righted his expensive jacket as if he hadn't just stabbed her through with a medieval sword.
As she whimpered she tried to get Jared's attention. As his stiff body grew limp behind her, she realized two horrifying things. The blade had gone through them both, and Jared was dead. His once thundering heartbeat didn't pound against her back. Elizabeth struggled to see behind her. His glassy eyes and slack jaw confirmed her suspicion.
Tears filled her eyes, and a violent sob shook her. Elizabeth grabbed for the hilt and started to pull. Pain bloomed anew, and she screamed as the sword exited hers and Jared's bodies. She fell forward on her knees. The blade clattered to the floor loudly. Sobs wracked her body as she struggled to come to terms with what had just happened.
Elizabeth crawled forward. Reaching for Jared's shirt, she slipped it on, hissing through the pain in her shoulder.
I need to find Josef. I need to call the police.
She found her underwear and slipped that on. Afraid but unwilling to leave Jared, she turned around. He was growing pale. His light, his everything was just—gone. Asmodeus had stabbed Jared clean through the heart through her.
Two birds, one stone.
As she crawled back to him, she gathered up the sword, curled up in his lap and cried. Cried for her lost life, the people hurt over her, and the world. She didn't know how much time passed, but loud voices and stomping feet woke her from a fitful sleep. Jared was still dead, she was covered in his and her blood, and the pain was a thousand times worse.
Elizabeth shifted to get up when loud, French-speaking cops burst through her doorway, guns raised. She let out a sigh of relief. She brushed a hand over her face, smearing blood. The cool stickiness was a dead giveaway. When they started to shout, spouting off things she couldn't understand, she realized she still had the sword in her hand—while she lay on a dead body, killed by said sword.
Her eyes went wide and she dropped it as if it had burned her.
"No! You don't—"
She didn't get any more out. What happened next seemed to happen in a blur. She was slammed to the floor, cuffed, and shoved down the stairs. As she walked on weak legs towards a police vehicle, everything seemed to stop around her. Elizabeth tried to see through all the pain of her life, and she couldn't. Shoved not too delicately into the back of the car, she gazed out and her eyes locked with Asmodeus’. He nodded with a smug grin and walked away.
"You haven't won," Elizabeth promised.
