"We were able to ascertain what went up the lane, and what returned. Same makes, but everything else different. The search warrant revealed everything else we needed to know. Sergeant Swinton's knowledge of cars clinched it, and made the job so much easier."
The Chief super's eyes twinkled. "So, I believe. He is a master in everything he does."
Did she hear a slight inflexion in the word 'master'?
"Right, thank you both. Job well done and back to normal duties next week. I believe you both have a long weekend?"
"Yes, Sir." They both spoke together. Out of the corner of her eye, Eva saw Jamie's lips twitch. What did he know she didn't?"
"Thank you, dismiss." They both saluted and turned on their heels. Jamie held the door open for Eva, as the chief spoke once more.
"Oh, and Sergeant?"
Eva stopped mid stride and waited as Jamie turned to face the speaker.
"Yes, Sir?"
"Take care of my subordinate. She's a perfect sub, I believe."
"Yes, Sir. In every way." He shut the door and patted Eva surreptitiously on the bum. "Aren't you, Ma’am?"
Eva fingered the tight silver ring on her wedding finger. The one fashioned like a collar and a lock, with a diamond in the center of the lock. The only thing safe for work.
"Yes, Sergeant, in every way."
