And with that simple answer, my entire world changed again, just as it had the night my brothers destroyed my laptop. If so much good could come from such a bad night, I couldn’t even imagine how much joy lay ahead of me now, but I was ready for it to start.
Climbing to my feet, I pulled Jordan to hers and kissed her to the sound of cheers all around us. The second we pulled apart, Colin tackled us, squealing and more teary-eyed than Jordan. “You guys.” He sniffled and hugged us again. “I just love you guys so much. And a wedding! I’m so excited!”
“But are you going to be the best man or the maid of honor?” I asked, winking at Jordan.
We all burst into laughter, and I slipped the ring on Jordan’s finger. “It was my mother’s,” I admitted.
“Nate!” Jordan gasped. She shook her head. “No, I couldn’t—”
“I want you to.”
“But your dad—”
“It was his idea. I went home to ask him if I was completely crazy, asking you to marry me at my age.”
“Which you are,” Colin teased. “The both of you.”
I laughed. “Maybe. But Dad gave me his blessing. He and Mom weren’t much older than us. He said fate doesn’t always work on our timetable. When something’s right, it’s right, and we should just go for it.”
Jordan cocked a brow at me. “Your dad said that?”
“Maybe that part was Pearl before she left. Whatever. The point is, Dad says welcome to the family. He said he could never give this ring to anyone else, but the thought of you wearing it feels right. Of course, if you want your own, we can—”
“No. No, it’s perfect. I would be honored to wear your mother’s ring.”
I didn’t realize how much I was hoping she would say yes until the words left her mouth and she was smiling at the ring. My chest burned at the sight of it on her finger.
She glanced at me, grinning, and I fell in love with her all over again. “Thank you, Nate. I love it. Look, it even already fits perfectly.”
“Somehow,” Colin said, “that doesn’t surprise me.”
It didn’t surprise me, either. After everything Jordan and I had experienced, I’d become a believer in fate.
“So…,” Jordan said, sliding her arms up over my shoulders and around my neck. I happily slipped my arms around her waist and squeezed her tightly to me. “You’re coming with me to LA this summer.”
I grinned. “I’m coming with you to LA this summer.”
“You know what this means, don’t you?”
“What?”
Her eyes sparkled and her grin fell crooked. “It means we’re going to have to get you some flip-flops.”
