  About Blushing Books

  Chapter One

Lyndsey Greene looked around the room one last time before grabbing her dress bag and other essentials and heading out the door of her apartment to meet the others at the church. Satisfied that she hadn’t forgotten anything of importance, she made her way down to the parking lot and loaded everything into the back seat.

As she drove from her Nashville apartment to the church across town, where her adopted brother would soon be saying his vows, she smiled. Bryan was finally taking the plunge. It had been iffy at best for several months as he and the love of his life, Janis Lincoln, found their way. Janis was a free spirit and hadn’t always been a fan of Bryan’s ideas of what married life should be. Through several mishaps and misunderstandings, however, the couple had found their way back to each other more than once, and today was their wedding day.

And then there had been the hurdle of the parents to get past. Bob and Maeve Walsh, although loving parents, had held fast to the idea that Lyndsey would someday become their daughter-in-law. When her own mother and father had been killed when she was a child, the Walsh family had taken her in and raised her as their own. The two couples had often joked that their children would someday marry, and for some reason, Bob and Maeve had expected it to actually happen. She loved Bryan and he loved her, but as a brother and a sister would care for each other. Convincing the folks of that had been no easy task. For that reason, Lyndsey had kept her own relationship a secret.

John Gordon owned a successful ad agency, and when Lyndsey had met him and worked with him on one of her many business trips for the publishing company she worked for, it had been an instant attraction for both of them. She traveled to see him often after that, always maintaining to the family they were business trips. He never came to see her, at her request. She had explained her dilemma to him, and it wasn’t until Bryan had made his intentions clear that he would marry Janis with or without his family’s blessing, that she’d finally come clean and confessed all. Bryan had known about John and had met him. He, for one, had been relieved when it all came out in the open. And when Bob and Maeve finally welcomed both Janis and John into their home, it had been a joyous occasion.

Finally, the big day was here. Bryan and Janis were to be married in the afternoon, followed by a marvelous reception at the club and a relaxing honeymoon in the Caribbean. John was flying in and would arrive in time for the ceremony. He was to rent a car and meet them at the church. She probably wouldn’t see much of him until after the ceremony. Being a bridesmaid in your brother’s wedding carried some degree of responsibility with it, after all.

She turned on her signal and waited for the traffic to pass before turning left off the roadway and into the parking lot of the church. A few cars were already there, and she pulled into an open spot next to Janis’s sister’s car. Jill was married to the handsome Jarrod Baine and was the envy of most of Nashville society’s young women. Jarrod had been the most eligible bachelor in town until saucy, red-haired Jill had marched into his office
s one day for an interview. Jill was the designer for Jarrod’s condominium construction business. Bryan and Janis were both architects for the business. It was truly a family business, especially after the wedding today.

Hurriedly she put the car in park and turned off the ignition. She got out and retrieved everything from the back seat before joining the others in the bride’s dressing room at the back of the church.

She was greeted by a frantic bride as soon as she entered the room. “Thank God you’re here.”

Lyndsey laughed. “Do I detect a slight case of wedding jitters?” she asked as she set down her things and went to Janis.

“Nothing is going right. I left my shoes at home. Mom went to get them for me. I had my hair done this morning and they fit my veil into the style, now I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to get it out tonight without messing up the whole thing.”

“Is she serious?” Lyndsey asked as she looked at Jill and grinned.

“Believe me, she is. I’ve listened to it since I picked her up this morning. The poor girl who had to do her hair was nearly in tears. I gave her a huge tip to compensate for the diva bride’s attitude.”

“You guys go on and laugh all you want to. I want everything to be perfect. It’s my wedding day.”

Jill shook her head. “I’m so glad we ran away to Gatlinburg when we got married.”

Lyndsey shook her head. “Perhaps I will rethink this big wedding thing and do the same thing.”

“Maeve will never forgive you if you do!” Janis exclaimed. “She is the ultimate planner.”

“Where is she, by the way? I thought she’d be here by now.”

“She went with Mom to get my shoes,” Janis replied.

“Those two have become very good friends while planning this wedding, haven’t they?” Jill asked.

“For someone who didn’t approve of Janis, to becoming her biggest supporter and becoming pals with your mother, it’s nothing short of a miracle.”

Janis attempted a smile. “I’m glad. Even though Bryan was adamant about the marriage, with or without approval from his family, I’m glad we have their blessing.”

“It all worked out. After this wedding, we have yours and John’s to look forward to,” Jill replied.

“Maeve is going all out on that one, believe me. She has been given free rein since John’s parents are no longer living,” Lyndsey told her.

“Now, I think we should go ahead and get into our dresses before we help Janis with hers, don’t you?” Jill asked as she picked up the bag holding her matron-of-honor gown.

“I agree. We may see more of the Diva Janis as we get her ready,” Lyndsey teased as she stuck her tongue out at her future sister-in-law.

A few minutes later, Jill and Lyndsey were dressed and putting the finishing touches on their hair and makeup when the two mothers returned with the shoes.

“Here you go, they were sitting in the box on the kitchen counter, just like you said they’d be,” Mrs. Lincoln said as she set the box on the table.

“Why aren’t you dressed, dear?” Maeve asked.

“We decided to get ready first so we can devote our time to the bride,” Jill replied.

“Good thinking. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a nervous bride,” Maeve answered with a smile.

“We should get a move on. The photographer will be arriving soon for the photo shoot before the ceremony. Come on, honey, let’s get you into that gorgeous dress,” Janis’s mother suggested.

“What time is Darcy coming?” Jill asked.

“She’ll be along any minute. Doubling as my coordinator and a bridesmaid has kept her very busy. She’s going by the club to make sure everything is in order for the reception before she heads this way,” Janis said as she allowed her mother to help her into her extraordinary gown.

All of the women stopped what they were doing to look at the vision in front of them when Mrs. Lincoln had helped the bride into the dress and finished zipping the back.

“Oh my, it’s the most gorgeous gown I’ve ever seen,” Jill said.

  “It’s exquisite,” Lyndsey added.

“I found it on the one trip I made by myself, believe it or not,” Janis said.

“All the shopping trips we made and we never found anything quite like it,” Jill said.

“Maeve had suggested a quaint little shop in Franklin, and I ran over there one Saturday morning,” Janis explained.

“Well, I think we need to check this shop out when we get ready to look for my gown,” Lyndsey said. “For now, though, we need to get your makeup done. Your mom’s right, the photographer will be here soon.”

Makeup finished, photo session over, and soon it was time for the ceremony to begin.

The bride was stunning as she walked up the aisle on her father’s arm. As Lyndsey stood at the front of the church with the rest of the wedding party, she caught John’s eye in the congregation and winked at him. Soon, it would be the two of them standing before their family and friends saying their own vows.

After Bryan and Janis were pronounced husband and wife, it was time for the festivities to begin. As she stood in the receiving line smiling at the guests, Lyndsey heard a deep voice say, “You look ravishing in your blue gown.”

“John, thank you,” she replied with a smile. He leaned over and gave her a peck on the cheek before moving on through the line.

She finally caught up with him at the club. The wedding party had been transported in limousines and had walked in together. Before taking her place at the head table, she found her fiancé and accepted a proper kiss from him. “It’s been a crazy day. Hopefully after all the traditional stuff is out of the way, we can talk,” she whispered.

“I’m hoping for a dance with the prettiest bridesmaid in the group,” he answered in a low tone.

“Oh, and which one would that be? I believe Jill’s and Darcy’s dance cards are all filled up,” she retorted.

John chuckled. “Go on, I think they are all finding their seats. I’ll catch up with you later.”

After a delicious buffet meal, the matron-of-honor and best man gave their speeches and toasts. It was time to cut the cake. Of course, when Janis threw her bouquet, it landed in Lyndsey’s hands as planned. Tradition out of the way and the first dances finished, it was time for everyone to hit the dance floor. John went straight to Lyndsey and escorted her out onto the wooden floor in front of the band.

She fell into his arms and asked, “Will our wedding be this perfect?”

“Our wedding will be magnificent. After all, Maeve is planning it.”

“True,” she replied with a giggle. “My adopted mom loves to be in charge. I’m just glad we both agreed to let her do it all. I’m much too busy, and with you being miles away most of the time, I know you don’t have time for details.”

“It brings her pleasure. The fact she is okay with the marriage is incentive enough for me to allow her to give you the wedding you deserve.”

He pulled her close to his chest and for the remainder of the dance, the couple swayed to the music, not speaking. When the music stopped, he bent down and kissed the top of her head before escorting her back to her seat. He sat down next to her and for the rest of the party, the two chatted and partied with the rest of the group. When it was time for the bride and groom to make their departure, everyone was hugging and saying goodbye.

Lyndsey collapsed into her chair when it was over. “It was fun, but I’m exhausted,” she said as Jill sat down next to her.

“I know. My little guy gave up a few hours ago. My in-laws took him home with them.”

“He was the most precious ring bearer I’ve ever seen,” Lyndsey told her as she remembered the little guy proudly walking up the aisle carrying the satin pillow that held the rings.

“He was a pro, wasn’t he?” Jill asked proudly.

“It’s a good thing the club is cleaning up. I don’t know that I’d have the energy to lift a finger. I’m ready to call it a night
, how about you?” she asked.

“I’m going to find Jarrod and suggest we head home,” Jill agreed. “I’ll see you soon.”

After saying their goodbyes, Lyndsey and John were finally in his rental car. He took her back to the church to retrieve her vehicle and they met at her apartment a few minutes later.

As he took the key from her and unlocked the door, she said, “It was a beautiful day.”

“Yes, it was. Now we need to get you into bed before you fall over,” he replied. “Come on, first it’s a hot bath for you.” He led her into the bedroom where he helped her out of her gown. She threw on a dark blue satin robe and while she busied herself with hanging up the gorgeous gown, John went into the bathroom to run a relaxing bath for her.

He helped her into the tub and stayed by her side, sponging off her body gently. “Just sit back and relax. I’ll leave you to some peaceful moments,” he said after a while. “Don’t fall asleep in there. If you’re not in the bedroom in fifteen minutes, I’ll come check on you,” he said as he left to give her some alone time.

Lyndsey laid her head back and let the warm lavender water take over her senses. The aroma was light, but relaxing. Her tired muscles soaked up the warmth and comfort of the water. When the bath began to cool, she stood up and reached for the towel John had laid out for her. He thought of everything. She toweled herself off and let the water out of the tub before walking softly across the hall to the bedroom. John was sitting up in bed watching television when she entered the room. He immediately picked up the remote and hit the power button. He patted her side of the bed and said, “Come on, it’s time for you to get some rest. Weddings are a lot of fun, but they sure are a lot of work.”

She crawled in beside him and snuggled close to him. Within minutes, she was sound asleep, safe and secure in the arms of the man she loved.
