He’d been thinking about kissing that spot since they got in the cab at the art museum, only half listening to Venetia. When he helped her out of the cab in front of the hotel and his hand had accidently brushed her breast, a fire ignited inside him that he knew only Venetia could put out. Not wanting to break contact, he guided her inside and onto the elevator, his hand placed in the center of her back.

Venetia could feel the heat spreading though her, radiating from where his hand was placed possessively on her back. The sexual tension had been building between them all day, from the innocent touch of his hand to him taking her hand as they walked, each had made her more aware of him.

In the cab, she’d known that he was staring at the spot on her collarbone that always made her jelly in his hands, his eyes broadcasting his desire loud and clear. Now she was so keyed up, the slightest touch would be all it would take for her to throw herself at him.

Once in the elevator, Lewis couldn’t wait any longer and swept her into his arms. His mouth came down on hers in a hot, possessive kiss, leaving no question of what he wanted. Venetia threw her arms around his neck and pressed her body against his, loving the feel of his hard muscles.

Lewis’ hands found the bottom of her tight skirt and pulled it up her thighs, then pushed his leg between hers. With his knee, he rubbed her through the silk of her panties, making her wet with anticipation. His hands found her breasts, hard and throbbing under the tight silk of her bodice, her nipples standing out clearly under the thin material.

Lewis was just bending to put his mouth on one when the elevator dinged, announcing their floor. They managed to right themselves before the doors opened, but Venetia blushed to think how far things had gone in the elevator where she was sure there were security cameras.

They were both panting with desire as Lewis fumbled to get the key in the door. When he finally managed to get the door open, he pulled Venetia into the room, slammed the door, and backed her up against it. Venetia was leaning against the door, her legs slightly parted, when with an almost feral look Lewis grabbed her head in both his hands and kissed her.

The kiss was shocking in its power, reducing her to putty in mere seconds, the door the only thing keeping her from collapsing on the floor. Just as she thought she was going to pass out from lack of oxygen, Lewis’ mouth left hers and began a slow exploration from her jaw to her ear, then down to that spot on her collarbone he’d discovered last night.

When his lips connected with the soft skin, she gasped as pleasure shot through her ending in a delightful tightening in her core. Moaning, head thrown back, she was sure that nothing had ever felt this wonderful before. But then Lewis found the zipper on the back of her dress and slid it down, letting the thin silk flutter to the ground when he slipped it off her shoulders.

Lewis’ breath caught in his throat when he saw the lace bra and panties she’d picked up earlier that day. They were nothing more than a few bits of lace, barely enough to cover her. She couldn’t mistake the look of pure desire on his face as he stripped off his clothes. His penis was hard and throbbing. Just looking at him standing in front of her made her pulse quicken even more.

She opened her arms to him, and he stepped up to her, then reached behind her and unclasped her bra. Her breasts were swollen with desire, hard and throbbing, desperate for his attention. But instead of giving her what she wanted, he sunk down on his knees, his eyes never leaving her face.

He kissed her belly, making her laugh a little when his beard tickled her. Then he slowly pulled her panties down and off. Looking up at her, he slid his hands up her legs, gently pushing them apart. Venetia’s heart was hammering in her chest, part of her worried about what Lewis was going to do and part of her enjoying it.

When he used his thumbs to gently spread her folds, she gripped his shoulders her legs trembling in anticipation. Lewis came up on his knees and leaned into her, his tongue sliding across her swollen clit, taking her breath away as a wave of pleasure flooded her with a searing heat that spread through her body.

Venetia spread her legs farther, lost as wave after wave, her passion built. Lewis, instinctually knowing that she was close, slid one of his thumbs inside her dripping core as his tongue continued to lavish her with attention. Venetia felt the heat building until it became almost unbearable, but then it spread though her as her orgasm washed her in a pleasure so immense she was left panting and weak.

Lewis rose to his feet, stepped between her legs, and lifted her off the floor. She wrapped her legs around him as he drove himself into her. Filling her with himself in one hard stroke that caused a pleased moan to escape from her mouth. She clung to him, her strength still depleted, as he filled her over and over again.

Some of the desperation they had both been feeling vanished, and Lewis became gentle. His mouth found hers as he gently set her on her feet then scooped her up again and walked to the couch. He laid her on the plush cushions then joined her. Positioning himself between her legs, he lifted them to his shoulders and slid inside her.

As he began a seductive rhythm, sliding inside her as deeply as he could, then all the way out again, his eyes met hers. The love she saw reflected in his struck her almost like a bolt of lightning and she finally understood what it meant to be in love. It didn’t matter that they’d only been together for a few weeks, she was hopelessly in love with Lewis.

Lewis too must had felt the connection that had just formed between them because he rolled them over again until Venetia was on top. She straddled him, rocking her hips back and forth, creating a wonderful friction between her legs. As her orgasm began to build, Lewis reached between them and used his thumb to rub her clit in tight little circles, sending her immediately over the edge.

Her body clenching around his throbbing penis took his breath away and plummeted him into ecstasy with Venetia clinging to him. As the throbbing in her loins began to subside, Venetia collapsed on top of Lewis, loving that the rapid beat of his heart and the sheen of sweat covering his body were because of her.

They were both silent for a long time, the enormity of what had just happened a bit shocking for them both. Venetia had long ago decided that her career was more important than romance, while Lewis had given up on ever finding a woman who was everything he wanted. Now they both found themselves faced with something that neither had expected.

  Chapter 5

When Lewis dropped Venetia off after their trip, they were both loaded down with boxes and bags, the result of the shopping spree. Venetia was floating on a cloud of bliss, her body still vibrating with the pleasure Lewis had given her over and over again that weekend. As they climbed the stairs, her landlady poked her head out of her door.

“Ms. Venetia, you got a package while you were gone. I signed for it, it’s in here,” she said, gesturing behind her.

“Oh, thank you, Mrs. Rodriguez. I can take it now,” she said, starting back down the stairs.

“No, I don’t think so. The box is very large,” she said in her heavily accented English. “You’ll need to come back and bring that big strong man.”

They dumped the packages and boxes in the apartment then went back downstairs to retrieve the package which did indeed turn out to be quite large. “I haven’t ordered anything lately. I don’t what this could possibly be,” she said, helping Lewis through the door.

“I wonder,” he said, a silly grin on his face.

“What have you done now?” she asked, suddenly suspicious.

“You’ll see,” he said, grunting under the weight of the box. “But right now I need to get this inside your apartment. It’s really heavy.”

“Poor baby. See what you get for being sneaky,” she said, grinning from ear to ear.

Once inside the apartment, Venetia tore into the box expecting to see more clothes, but instead she found every art supply she could ever want. From water colors to canvasses and the best brushes, the box held it all.

  “What’s this?” she asked.

“I saw the look on your face when you talked about your painting. You miss it, I can tell,” he said, wrapping his arms around her where she stood looking into the box.

“But I don’t have time,” she said, her fingers itching to get the supplies out of the box.

“You need to make time. It’s important to be balanced. Don’t tell me that you don’t feel better after our weekend away,” he said, nuzzling her neck to soften his words.

“I do, but I can’t just drop everything and paint. I have too many responsibilities,” she said, turning in his arms to look at him.

“It’s time to start letting go of some of those responsibilities. You told me yourself that there’s enough money to hire another doctor. Do it, then give yourself a life. You won’t be sorry and don’t forget that I’m part of that life.”

Venetia thought about his words, then smiled up at him. “Well, it wouldn’t hurt to see what all is in this box.”

When Lewis finally left that night, Venetia hardly noticed. She’d found the charcoal and sketch pad and was happily reproducing some of the places they’d been that weekend. He kissed her on top of the head, then let himself out, happy that she was so distracted by something other than the clinic and her patients.

Late that night, snuggled in her bed, Venetia thought about their perfect weekend; from the shopping spree to the Broadway show, it had been everything she’d ever dreamed of. The fact that she’d shared the experience with Lewis had only been a bonus. She’d almost forgotten what it was like to have fun, to have a life. But starting tomorrow, she was going to change that.

The next morning, Bernice beat her to the clinic, something that rarely happened. When she came through the door, her cheeks red from the cold, she tried to escape to her office unnoticed, but Bernice wasn’t having any of that.

“Are you trying to sneak past me?” Bernice said, blocking Venetia’s path to her office.

“No, but I’m late,” Venetia said, knowing there was no way Bernice was going to let her by without some snippet about the weekend.

“Not so late you can’t tell me about your weekend. Is that a new outfit?”

“Yes, and we went to New York for the night,” Venetia said, a big grin spreading across her face. She just couldn’t hold it in any longer.

“As in New York City? For one night?”

“Yes, and it was magical. Bernice, it’s time we hired that other doctor. Do you still have those resumes somewhere?” she said, trying to get into her office again.

Bernice still didn’t move but said, “So, that’s how it is.”

Venetia blushed then said, “Yes, that’s how it is.” But she couldn’t wipe the silly grin off her face.

“Well, it’s about time you got a life. I’ll start scheduling interviews right away.”

Venetia couldn’t just drop her responsibilities, but over the next few weeks she worked hard to make time for Lewis. The search for a new doctor to join the clinic had been difficult. She wanted just the right person in the job and none of the candidates she’d interviewed had been quite right.

She’d known it would be difficult but hadn’t anticipated just how difficult. Lewis was beginning to become annoyed with her, sure that she was being too picky. It had nearly resulted in a fight several times last week.

“I just think you’re expecting too much,” Lewis had said after she’d turned away the last doctor on her list.

“I know, but I’m not going to feel good about this until I find the right person. Please, be patient,” she’d pleaded.

He’d pulled her into his arms and kissed the top of her head. “I’ll be here when you’re ready. I think you should move in with me, after all we spend most of our time there. We can redecorate the back bedroom and turn it into a studio for you.”

“Can we wait until I find my new doctor? I just can’t think about anything else right now.”

“We can, but I’m going to help you find that doctor. There has to be the perfect person out there, you’re just not reaching them.”

“I take any help I can get,” she said, leaning her head against his chest listening to his steady heartbeat. “I know how hard it is for you to understand how important this is to me, but don’t think I don’t appreciate you. I’m going to find that doctor and then we’ll talk about me moving in.”

“Deal,” he’d said, then led her into the bedroom where he’d made love to her, slowly and thoroughly, a promise of what was to come.

When Dr. Mathew Billings’ resume was slapped down on her desk, she looked up to find Bernice grinning broadly at her. “I’ve found him. He’s perfect, just look.”

She picked up the resume, scanned it quickly, then sat back and read it through again. Dr. Billings was perfect: a pediatrician who had a successful clinic, but due to a recent unexpected inheritance had decided to dedicate his time to helping those who needed it most.

“Get him in here. I want to meet him. He sounds like he might just be the one we’ve been looking for,” Venetia said, suddenly as excited as Bernice.

By the end of the week, she’d asked Dr. Billings to join the clinic, finalized the paperwork that would allow them to take on interns, and hired a new nurse. Bernice was busy putting together a new schedule with of all things off time for Venetia. She’d still be working a lot, but there was also plenty of time for fun.

Thanks to the added help, the clinic was actually able to expand its hours which would eventually make everyone’s job easier since patients could be spaced out further. Lewis was thrilled with the effort Venetia was making to delegate the work of running the clinic to her staff. They’d fallen into a pleasant routine in their relationship, and though they hadn’t discussed it, he was sure that she would be moving in with him soon.

Then they’d meet each other’s families, although he dreaded introducing her to his family and was afraid of what her family might say. He was determined to move forward in their relationship because he knew without a doubt that Venetia was the one for him.

Venetia too was feeling excited for the future, she’d learned that it was possible to spread the work load and provide the quality of care she insisted on. Dr. Billings and the other new staff were doing a great job fitting in to the clinic, their dedication winning Venetia’s respect immediately.

She was painting again, wearing her new clothes all over town with Lewis, and relearning what it meant to be truly happy. She moved in with Lewis without hesitation, so deeply in love she was swept away. Everything in her life was perfect; she knew it couldn’t last forever, but she was going to enjoy it while it lasted.

Time seemed to fly for Venetia. Months passed and her bliss continued, but as she’d predicted, the peace couldn’t last forever. The storm came from an unexpected place and happened so quickly that she hadn’t had time to prepare herself for the aftermath. Had she been prepared, things might have turned out differently.

Her mother had been bugging her incessantly about bringing Lewis around to meet the family; the problem was that meant the entire family. Grandparent, aunts, uncles, cousins, and probably a few neighbors as well. Unlike the quiet dinner she’d shared with his parents, it would be a rowdy production with kids fighting, music blasting, and an obscene amount of food.

She knew that her father would be especially hard on him, she was his little girl after all. But when she’d voiced her concerns to Lewis, he’d shrugged them off. “I can handle your dad. After all, I only have the best of intentions, he’ll be able to tell that.”

“I know, but my whole family, they’d drown you in attention. Are you sure you want to do this? We could invite my family to the city instead,” she offered, worry creasing her brow.

“Stop worrying. It’s going to be fine,” he said, tipping her chin up so he could look in her eyes. “You know I love you.

She nodded her head, and whispered, “Yes.” The look in his eyes was so intense it took her breath away.

“Then know that nothing is going to come between us
, not your family, not my family. I’ve been waiting a long time for you, and I’m not going to let you go no matter what. I love you. Do you understand?” he said, tears in his eyes.

“Oh, Lewis. I love you too. Nothing is ever going to come between us.”

They left for the party wrapped in their love, feeling immune to the world around them. She shouldn’t have worried, Lewis got along with her family famously. He charmed her father and even made her mother blush once. He let her aunts and cousins stuff him full of food, then agreed to play catch with the men in the backyard.

As she watched him disappear out the back door, she decided that she’d never loved anyone as much as she loved Lewis right then. She could see far into their happy future when they’d have their own kids to fight and yell at family gatherings. Then she shook her mind from those thoughts, they’d only been together for a matter of months, much too soon to be thinking about having a baby with him.

She decided her thoughts had probably gone in that direction because her cousin had shown up proudly displaying her new baby. Venetia had yet to hold him, there being too many other hands available, but she knew her turn would come and she was looking forward to holding the small bundle in her arms.

Now that the men had gone outside, the baby was being passed around the living room where all the women had congregated to ooh and ahh over the little boy. When Venetia’s turn came, she held the little bundle in her arms and felt a deep stirring in her womb. Brushing off the feeling she concentrated on the little face peering up at her.

At just that moment, the men came stomping in from the backyard. The sight that greeted Lewis when he walked into the room was one he would remember the rest of the life, the moment when things changed between them forever. Venetia was sitting on the couch with a baby in her arms, a peaceful smile on her face. He’d never seen her look so beautiful.
