That didn’t mean he couldn’t help her.

  “Get behind me, please.”

  “Huh? Ah.”

Susan released a startled noise as Adam placed a hand on her shoulder and shifted her until she was standing behind him, hidden from Connor Sword.

“T-thank you very much,” Susan whispered into his back.

Adam turned his head just slightly and whispered, “You are welcome.”

Once he was certain Connor Sword could not see Susan and visa versa, Adam realized Aris, Fayte, Lilith, and even Titania were looking at him. He couldn’t see the expressions of anyone but Titania (everyone else was covering their faces, after all). However, just their eyes was enough to make him feel uncomfortable.

  “What is it?” he asked.

“It is nothing,” Fayte said. He thought she might be smiling beneath that veil.

“I’ve said it before, but you are very good at looking after people,” Titania muttered.

“Hee-hee. I always knew you were a kind person,” Aris said with a giggle. She reached over and hugged his arm, which sent a jolt through his brain because she was wearing very skimpy clothing and he could feel her skin and body heat.

“I’m not that kind,” Adam muttered.

“I beg to differ.” The one who said that was Lilith, which startled everyone and made them look at the normally taciturn woman. Lilith, however, only had eyes for Adam. “You have always been very kind to others.”

Adam wanted to deny her words, but he couldn’t find it in himself to speak, so he instead observed the remaining two people in Levon’s group.

The woman whom he guessed was Gaia had dark skin, straight black hair, and wore a sort of earthy-looking robe. It was made of greens and browns to resemble the earth. Her staff had a similar color scheme. It was, in many ways, just like Flame Emperor’s clothing, but it was designed to represent this woman’s element.

It was interesting. Gaia was the name of the Greek primordial goddess of the Earth, which he assumed was the inspiration for her name. He wondered how she found it. Greek mythology had fallen out of the limelight in the early 2100s.

Last among them was the man known as Ymir. He had a feminine face and a cold demeanor. Because his features more closely resembled a woman’s, it gave him a slightly off vibe, but Adam did not let that fool him. This man radiated a chilling intent as though his very body was made of ice. Adam wondered if the man was an esper. Like his counterparts, he wore Mage robes, but these were ice blue with darker blue lining the hem.

“Titania,” Adam whispered. “Can you cast [scan] on those people?”

“Leave it to me,” Titania said.

Before long, Adam saw several screens appear in front of him to display the stats of the Pleonexia Alliance’s leadership.

“Levon, Connor, and the Flame Emperor appear to have leveled up since you last checked the forums. It looks like they also learned some extra skills,” Adam said.

Titania nodded. “Learning a new skill is rather easy. You can learn them from scrolls, though a scroll is rare. You can also learn them from someone willing to teach you. I believe the guard at the front gate mentioned the training hall when we first arrived here.”

“He did. I guess they paid the trainers to teach them those skills. I’m a little surprised they didn’t change class, but I guess they want to wait for a better class to come along,” Adam muttered as he studied their stats. “Their skills don’t look as powerful as the ones we have, but I guess that’s because they are normal skills that anyone can learn if they have enough money. Hmm. Their levels aren’t bad, though. They were probably grinding hard to reach their current level before the tournament began.”

“That seems likely,” Fayte said with a nod. “This tournament is important to everyone. Well, I say it is important to everyone, but most of these people belong to subsidiary branches for one of the two major guilds.”

By two major guilds, Fayte was, of course, referring to the Pleonexia Alliance and Daggerfall Dynasty. They were the largest guilds in the American Federation. Adam had learned a little about them both from Fayte. According to her, the Pleonexia Alliance was larger with around 50.3 million members. Daggerfall Dynasty had approximately 49.5 million.

Of course, that only added up to around 100 million people, and the American Federation contained around 750 million players. The rest of the players were either part of a smaller guild or worked independently from the guilds.

Aris also studied their stats. She didn’t say anything at first, but then a giggle escaped her lips.

“These stats suck,” she said bluntly.

Fayte turned just her head to look at the girl. In a voice that seeped with amusement, she said, “Adam said the same thing when he first saw our stats before we gained a hidden class.”

While Aris was giggling at how she and Adam had the same thought process, Levon and his group walked further into the room. Just as Levon was looking around, his eyes stopped on their group. His eyes first locked onto Fayte. Then, as if pulled by some magical force, his gaze traveled to Adam. At that moment, as their eyes locked, the man’s complexion grew dark and stormy. It only lasted for a single instant. However, that instant was long enough for Adam to see what Levon hid underneath that polite exterior of his.

“Looks like he hasn’t changed at all,” Adam muttered.

  “What was that?” asked Fay
te.

“I said it looks like he’s angry,” Adam said with a small head shake.

Levon could obviously not hear what they were saying, but he seemed to recognize that Adam and Fayte were talking to each other. With his lips drawn into a tight smile, he began wading toward them.

“Bwa ha ha ha ha! Look at all these people! I never thought there’d be so many players who thought they could snatch the [Guild Creation Token] from my hands!”

Before Levon could make his way over, a loud and rambunctious voice resounded throughout the waiting room. Everyone, Levon included, looked toward the stairs as five more people emerged.

Four of those people were men. They all looked relatively similar, with strong jaws and a masculine appearance. Their skin was dark like obsidian, their eyes equally black. Each possessed a powerful bearing that all but demanded attention. It was easy for anyone to see they were brothers.

The person leading the group looked like the oldest, at several heads taller than the other three. He wore a golden chestplate that gleamed in the light. However, the rest of his armor was made of steel. A simple-looking sword was strapped to his waist.

Perhaps because he was the oldest and the most charismatic, the other three people merely stood behind him like decorations. This man had an overbearing presence that made him the center of attention.

Or it would have if not for the person beside him.

While the dark-skinned man was loud and raucous, the person at his side did not say a single word, but that hardly mattered. Their very presence drew Adam’s gaze to them.

Adam couldn't see what this person looked like. His entire body was covered in a white cloak with a hood that hid their face. He could see nothing beyond the hood either because their face was covered by a plain white mask.

There was nothing about this person that stood out to him; he was around the same height as the average adult male, and because his entire body was covered from head to toe, it was impossible to make out any defining features. Held within this person’s right hand was a spear.

Unlike Levon’s glaive, the spear this person wielded was a traditional weapon. The shaft was about two yards in length, its entire body made from gleaming silver. Near the spear’s blade was the head of a roaring lion surrounded by a thick mane. The blade itself, meanwhile, had several hook-like blades sticking out near the base, but then it turned into a more traditional leaf shape further out. Adam estimated the blade’s overall length to be about one foot long.

“Those are the leaders of Daggerfall Dynasty,” Fayte explained. “The man in front is called Daren Daggerfall. The three behind him are his brothers: Skyrim, Morrowind, and Oblivion.”

“Pffft! Did they name themselves after old video games? Who does that?” asked Aris with a giggle.
