Besides, as Molly had often told him, a mansion didn’t fit with the lovely town of Fool’s Chance.
As he unlocked the front door, the warmth of the fire met them at the door. So did the aroma of stew cooking on the wood stove. Molly had insisted on putting it on this morning before leaving for A Stitch in Time.
He couldn’t believe his good fortune in coming here to arrange a gown for his sister. For Eloise, he would do anything.
As it turned out, fate was on his side.
Daniel looked down at the love of his life, her protruding belly the most beautiful thing he’d ever seen. Apart from her that was. He leaned in and kissed her lips. “I love you Molly Emerson.”
He fought back the emotion that still overtook him every time he looked at his wife. Every time he lay in bed with her, and whenever he felt the new life move inside her.
As he gently placed her on the bed, the doctor arrived. He was followed by Mrs Grayson and Mrs Hardy.
Molly’s bottom lip quivered again. “I didn’t get your gown finished, Mrs Grayson,” she said sadly.
“My dear girl! Don’t you worry about that. The dress was a distraction, to keep you busy and stop you worrying.”
Why was he not surprised? The dear old thing was like a mother to Molly, and now she’d be like a grandmother to their baby.
“Right Daniel. Out.” She shoo’d him out of the house like an annoying chicken.
“But…”
“No but’s. This is women’s business. Not for men. Go on, get.” She shoved him out of the room and closed the door in his face.
She quickly opened it again. “Put water on the stove. Lots of it. Big pots full. Tell me when it’s boiled.”
He nodded and scurried off to do what he was told. It seemed like forever until the water boiled. Molly’s screams were unnerving, but if she had to endure it, so did he.
Daniel knocked quietly on the door once the water was ready.
“Ah, Daniel,” the doc said. “Right on time. Come and welcome your new son.”
“I have a boy?” Daniel’s eyes filled with tears, and he didn’t care who saw them. He had a son. “What about Molly? Is she alright?”
The doc pulled the door wide open. “Come and see for yourself. She’s sitting up, holding the baby.”
And sure enough she was. Molly looked across to him, tears filled her eyes too. They had a baby. Together.
The first of many, he hoped. But if it wasn’t to be, that was fine too.
They had their little family. And they had their enduring love for each other.
Everything was right in his world.
