  But his words fell away, for the mirror surface was growing wavy and a new landscape was forming within it. This was one of sharp mountain peaks and trees with leaves of orange, purple and gold.

  “Goodbye, Rufus,” she said, for the angry mob was closing in now. And what they may have lacked in smarts, or good sense, or physical coordination, they more than made up for in drive and determination. She reached out and squeezed his hand. “Be well.”

  “And you.” For a man with a freshly-found sense of humor, his face was all seriousness. “Will I see you again?”

  “Quest for your Vorpal sword,” she told him. “And after —if you should wonder and dither whether to wander yet further … to Thither …?” She smiled and left it at that.

  Thither awaited. And it was a whole new world of Maybes.

  Jenn Thorson is a marketing writer by day and an author by night — so sort of like Batgirl, but with less crime fighting and more carpal tunnel. She lives in Pittsburgh, PA, with two curious cats, one of whom smiles but is not from Cheshire.
