“That which is Below corresponds to that which is Above, and that which is Above, corresponds to that which is Below, to accomplish the miracles of the One Thing... ”.

  Hermes Trismegistus, “The Emerald Tablet”.

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God…(1) God created the Invisible World and gave His Angels unlimited power. Then He created Heaven, Earth and all living things. He created fish and reptiles, birds and animals, and then He created human beings in His own image and likeness. Then God took these creatures and put them in the Garden of Eden and commanded them saying “Take care of the Earth and all I have created on it. Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”

There were two Powerful Creatures facing each other between Heaven and Earth: Michael the Archangel, the Leader of the heavenly host ruling beside the Seat of Our Lord, and Satanail, the Fallen Angel, the Prince of the demons of darkness. They stood facing each other, as if estimating their powers given to them on the Day of Creation. Archangel Michael, the heavenly guardian, was ready to put up a fight against his long-time adversary at any moment. The Dark Angel could not be underestimated, for the Almighty Himself gave him enormous strength and bravery. If Satanail persists in the World to this day, it’s only because the Creator predestined him for a special role as the servant in Purgatory and the collector of corrupt human souls.

Their encounters occurred here only in exceptional cases when it came to something of real importance. During such encounters the angels shared their influence upon a human soul which was waiting for a new incarnation, and through which they were to act in the future. They discussed potential critical situations in the life of a chosen man which could divert him from the mission he was destined for.

Here, in the place between Heaven and Earth, the angels would make a deal negotiating in advance the acceptable lines of attack in case one of them – yet again – should violate any of the terms they already agreed upon. The Prince of Darkness pursued a specific goal: to endow a man preparing for his earthly incarnation with as many of his advantages as possible. Staying at a definite existential level in the World of Hereafter, the man often did not have the slightest idea of his future mission on Earth. Every human was given two angels at the moment of his or her birth: one angel guided a man to the Path of Light, while the other one tried to seduce him away from it. A potential chosen man was given a time and place of birth, a mission, personality traits, and the right to choose. Every angel would endow a human soul yet unembodied, with his merits and flaws which were thoroughly recorded by the Archangel in The Book of Lives while Satanail made his entries in The Book of Shadows. These Books also specified the boundaries the newly incarnated were not allowed to cross. Abidance by the rules was monitored by angels partially responsible for the fate of a human being.

Fallen angels always tried to be as close to a man as possible keeping only one thing in mind: to take possession of his Body and Soul. They tried to seduce him away from the Path of Light, and the farther a man strayed from his divine predestination, the higher was the pressure he underwent. All means were permitted to achieve the desired goal. A man is easily corruptible – you only have to show the opportunities unfolding before him, from a little luck to a colossal success.

Each time everything seemed to have been achieved some unexpected circumstances would interfere with a man’s life, changing its path so drastically that even the angels didn’t know how to deal with the situation at hand. At this stage a man was given absolute freedom of choice. Still, a light guardian was nearby day and night, knowing full well that dark angels were also following his charge. The Kingdom of Darkness didn’t want to miss a single chance to fully get the man under its influence. When the guardian felt he lacked the strength necessary to protect the man from the pressure exerted by the Kingdom of Darkness he would call on Michael the Archangel to help him, and the latter would put up a severe fight for man’s immortal soul. The fight against Satanail that could go on forever…

  Part 1

  Chapter 1

A new star flared up in the distance – small but very bright. It made nearby stars look pale by comparison. Michael the Archangel opened The Book of Lives and saw the unfolding vistas of lives of this beautiful first-ever woman: incarnation upon incarnation, the moments he remembered so well. She attracted him even now, at a distance. The inexplicable feeling of overwhelming tenderness, so strong again in his heart, confused him and prevented him from focusing his attention. The Archangel had been uneasy since the moment he knew that the time had come for her to be born again. ‘‘I will be near you again…’’ he thought, sinking into the depths of his memories.

Michael was very handsome – his bottomless blue eyes looked at you with a particular sternness; a well-shaped nose set off his strong-willed features, his tight thin lips forestalled any attempt to contradict him.

The athletic body of the Great Archangel was dressed in shining scarlet clothes. His head was crowned with a golden helmet inlayed all over with emeralds, rubies and sapphires scattered around a huge diamond that could blind with its glitter when looked at. Hanging on the right of the Archangel’s powerful torso was a gigantic sword, its handle also inlayed with jewels, while the tip of the handle was bedecked with an emerald of incredible beauty whose magical shimmer was captivating. This bright-green jewel had enormous power. The Archangel often put his palm onto this powerful weapon as if underlining by this gesture his willingness to fight. Michael had some immortal force hidden in him, and few were those capable of standing up to it. He was invincible.

The Archangel was opposed by the other Angel; the look on his face was constantly shifting, but his beauty and charisma were hard to ignore. Satanail was tall and well-built, his black garments barely clothed his broad chest covered with lush vegetation. Dark slightly curly hair cascaded over his shoulders. His forehead was high and open, while his dark penetrating eyes seemed to see through everything. He looked mysterious, and this unfathomable enigma was somewhat alarming. Satana
il emanated some inexplicable force; he was incredible powerful.

In his hands he held a gray helmet incrusted with red rubies surrounded by weakly glowing black pearls; crowning the helmet was a golden dragon’s head with glaring red eyes. Satanail had a sword too – its metal shimmered dimly and the handle drew the eye with its big jewel which looked like the Black Diamond Eye; а jewel which had vanished from the heavenly mountains very long ago and gave its owner virtually unlimited power.

Every time the Archangel approached him, Satanail would feel a slight tremble starting in his body. He knew that he should keep away from this formidable and relentless warrior. This time, as before, it was the Heavenly Guardian who broke the tense silence hanging in the air.

‘We’ll have to discuss some crucial details concerning the life of the first-ever woman who is going to reappear in this world hundreds of years after her last incarnation. Her coming is fraught with big changes in the life of all Mankind. In all her past lives we have almost always been tightly bound to each other, Satanail. You made irrevocable blunders, but every time you managed to escape punishment. This time everything is different though; her coming to Earth will be the last one. As before, we have to set definite rules, and the breach of these rules shall entail sanctions imposed upon both of us. We must decide how this woman is going to live through this incarnation and what personal traits we are obliged to give her.’

Michael the Archangel paused and looked intently at Satanail and the Prince of Darkness felt a tremble pass through his body yet again.

‘I shall endow her soul with will power that will help her cope with all the troubles likely to emerge in her life. She will have persistence, perseverance and understanding. She will gradually discover the invisible world from which she’ll be able to draw knowledge necessary for her to advance towards the main objective. Every conclusion she is going to draw must be her own, while my task will be to guide the woman along her predestined path opening for her the mysteries of the Universe in due course. As before, she will be beautiful, compassionate and responsible,’ the Archangel said.

‘And I’m going to give her a piercing intelligence,’ Satanail responded quickly. ‘I shall also endow her with inquisitiveness which will prevent her from being satisfied with what has already been achieved. I shall add some magic charm to her beauty…She will be irresistible,’ he went on as if stressing the fact that he was capable of giving the chosen woman more merits than Michael the Archangel could. ‘I shall see to it that she experiences ardent emotions and irresistible sexual desire,’ he added with a faint smile. ‘She will be cunning, famous and rich…’

‘Sometimes, on a subconscious level, she will be aware of our influence,’ the Archangel said, ‘but there will be events we must not interfere with. I mean the moments of her free choice – something that wasn’t predestined. And don’t forget,’ the Archangel added, ‘that all her personal qualities must be in perfect harmony. The chosen woman must have as few flaws as possible. I wish I could do without you during this incarnation,’ he said discontentedly.

‘We both know perfectly well that even the best qualities we are going to give this beautiful woman may someday turn against us – as was the case last time. It is not always that the Equilibrium Law enables our interference in her life. What’s more, we are not entitled to make corrections in the person we created once he or she has been born. Anyway, this will not be the person each of us would like to see. We should not forget that people are very unpredictable. When left unattended, this woman will have to make decisions totally on her own, without any outside help,’ said the Black Angel thoughtfully.

The angels talked in darkness occasionally interrupted by stars that blinked on and off in the distance. The light that illuminated the place was only coming from the Archangel. Satanail was uneasy and wanted to go through the incarnation problems as soon as possible so that he could quickly merge into darkness.

‘In the past,’ the Archangel said, ‘we gave the previous earthly creature more qualities than was envisaged. By doing so we filled her genius with a continuous succession of flaws she had to grapple with – unsuccessfully – till the end of her days. These flaws, which had been inherited from you, she used skillfully against those around her. She made a lot of people unhappy. I don’t want to see it happen again.’

‘Don’t forget that she dedicated the second half of her life to the weak and poor. Finally, her flaws helped her find the right way in life,’ Satanail countered. ‘I promise to refrain from being tempted to seduce the chosen one away from her path, but it doesn’t mean I’m going to abandon my goals! I don’t pressure people into doing this or that. I just urge them to act. They always have a choice, and if the woman follows my footsteps, it will not be my fault.’

Satanail knew all the tricks and therefore laid alluring traps in the very beginning. Not one of the gullible people, when caught in such a trap, had the slightest idea of what the outcome would be. The Cunning Angel almost always managed to get away with it: he knew where to stop. He knew the line that should not be crossed. Satanail would guide people to an abyss then stop at its edge and stealthily step aside making room for his victims to fall down into it.

Now, after hundreds of years, two powerful unearthly adversaries stood there staring at each other: their eyes glittering, and firm expressions on their faces showing their willingness to start implementing the new incarnation. In spite of all potential problems, they were looking forward to the coming of the woman to whom they were both attracted.

Just like ordinary people, angels could fall in love, sometimes with human beings. The angels would get close to the people to whom they were attracted by using those people's bodies and emotions; they would guide the thoughts and actions of their loved ones in such a way as to fulfill their own desires. Such events had a strong impact upon the people involved in such affairs; strange things happened in their wake. Life changed for each human concerned, depending upon whom such a person was having an affair with: if it was an angel from the Kingdom of Light, the person’s genius was brought out, urging him on towards everything good and beautiful; and if it was an angel from the Kingdom of Darkness, the person would attain supernatural power. Instances of a double connection were very rare but they did sometimes happen – when two angels of opposite natures fell in love with one and the same being. It is only in such exceptional cases that the human being they chose would have limited power over both angels. The triangles of this kind bred such a strong interconnection between its sides that was very hard to break – both for the person and for the angels. A human being caught between two people who were angels incarnate often faced an impossible choice.

It was in such rare instances that the bondage between Michael the Archangel and Satanail would become rather strong. When such situations arose, both uncompromising opponents looked for ways of coming to terms with them, but sometimes they failed – with the inevitable outcome of spilling somebody’s blood. Deep emotions brewing in the hearts of the Angels – so different, but still so similar in their essence – were a connecting link between these two creatures created by the Heavenly Father.

Satanail looked up at the Archangel and said in a decisive tone of voice, ‘The mission Our Creator assigned me on this Earth is to urge Mankind towards temptation. The man capable of overcoming his vices deserves respect, but he who cannot cope with temptation loses himself. The Big Scale shall not tilt towards Evil. I get rid of the people who are in constant violation of natural balance and thus I help maintain the equilibrium in the Universe. As you know, the Creator can eliminate me at any moment… But everybody needs me in the capacity of the Sweeper because without the work I’m doing the world will cease to exist. If I perish, the Universe will sink into utter chaos. I am the Angel of Death, I am the Lord on this Earth – and this is why I’m so important!’ Satanail articulated every word, stressing his significance. ‘It is by the consent of the Kingdom of Light that I follow man’s footsteps laying all
sorts of traps and testing his nerve and soul. Human beings are always entitled to choose, and everybody is the master of his or her own destiny! My existence in the World is crucial, and this time I want our chosen one to realize this. She must get to know my true mission before she will have to leave this Earth again,’ he concluded.

‘All right then. But if you violate the boundaries we agreed upon, you will be punished,’ Michael the Archangel warned him. ‘Don’t forget that your power is limited. You’re always trying to get round the rules – by hook or by crook. You often overstep the mark in trying to win people over, and I find it hard to tolerate such behavior.’

‘But you’ll have to,’ Satanail replied. ‘You’ll also have to come to terms with the fact that I am not your enemy but the one who serves the Creator – just like you do!’

The Archangel listened attentively to what Satanail was saying. He was fully aware of the fact that his adversary was very skilled in the laws of the Universe. Though Michael didn’t like to be contradicted, he preferred not to go on with the debate, because he didn’t want to jeopardize what he was waiting for with barely disguised impatience: the coming of the chosen woman.

Michael the Archangel revealed the details Satanail was supposed to learn about, but he kept back the place and time of birth, and the names of the prospective parents singled out for the role; he was strict in guarding the secret of the baby’s conception because the incarnation should not be disrupted by any accidental circumstance.

‘The yet-unborn girl was given a selected childless couple for whom she would become a long-desired and only child. You’ll be informed about her date of birth later on, and the two of us will be invisibly present at the moment she is born into the world. This last stage is to become the foundation of our agreement,’ Michael the Archangel said, tiredly closing his eyes. The thought of Satanail interfering with his intentions continued to alarm him.
