chapter thirty-two
Life as a Delgado
The night of my wedding, I thought those were the best four hours of my life. I didn’t know it would only get better with time, but I learned. Being married to Victor has been everything I wanted and more.
We graduated a week after our wedding and went on our honeymoon in Puerto Rico. We had so much fun it felt like a dream. I wanted to move there and stay on the beach.
Victor said Tali would have a fit if we didn’t come back home, but we did look at places for a vacation home. I wanted to buy one, but Victor insisted he would buy me one next time we go.
We never got to go back as soon as we wanted to. I found out I was pregnant our first week of college. I wasn’t able to sit through my lectures because my food wouldn’t stay down. It didn’t take long to figure out why. Victor and I were so happy. I didn’t have to drop my classes because one of the girls in my class was nice enough to give me notes and help me out until the morning sickness passed.
Victor was so proud when we found out I was having twins. Alex was happy he got engaged the night of graduation. That gave him and Vanessa two months to shine before our new babies took the spotlight.
Victor made me promise not to name any of our sons Victor. After the stories, he finally heard about his dad, he said he wasn’t looking to have any more Victor’s in the family. I thought that was funny. I had actually been tempted to name one of my sons Victor until he put it that way.
My new mom, Tali had been a great help. The nursery had been ready since I turned six months. I spent a lot of time with her and the baby twins, Celica and Cesar. They got big so fast. I wanted to learn as much as I could for my two little ones.
The day of my baby shower was the longest day for so many reasons. We had a big dinner for Victor and Alex’s birthday the day before. I didn’t know, just sitting and opening gifts could be so tiring.
Sitting around all our friends and family made me think about how I got there. I had a bigger baby shower than I think anyone has ever had. The gifts that were bought for my twins were worth more than most people’s brand new cars.
That night after the shower I sat in my husband’s arms, resting against his chest. His huge hands rubbed my huge belly. We were lying in our bed in our enormous house.
In the bedroom, that’s four times the size my room back in the Towers. I looked at what brought me there. My pain turned into so much joy. I’d be nineteen after my little guys were born, but I had more than any of the nineteen year olds I used to call friends. More than what any of us thought I would ever have.
“Mama you sleep,” Victor whispered in my ear just confirming my love for his deep voice.
“No Poppa, they won’t stay still tonight. I’m so sleepy though,” I answered.
“I was thinking, you want to try again after their born?”
“Vic, let me have them first,” I laughed. “I don’t know… if you want to, as long as I can still handle school and taking care of you.”
“Yeah Meliyah, I want to,” he said as he reached for my face to kiss me. “I liked growing up in a big family. I want that for my babies.”
“I want that for them too. I love you, Victor.”
“I love you too, Baby.”
Epilogue
So, You See
Through all I’d learned, I knew that if one or both of the little babies I felt moving around inside of me was a girl, I would teach her to love herself first. I would show her what real love is. I knew her father would show her what a real man looks like.
Victor would teach our daughters to wait for love and happiness. To know not run into the arms of danger. I learned that the hard way, but Tali and Victor made sure I got the lesson.
I am better for it. By the time of our baby shower, I’d finished my first year of college. Vic and I had owned rental properties that paid our bills. Life couldn’t have been better.
I can say I have one of the sexiest, smartest, most loving husbands in the world. I have my family, a mom and a dad. I am finally loved. Not everyone can say all those things. I never thought I would be able too. But I can. What I thought would destroy me saved my life.
“So, you see, you have to understand, the Delgado men come with just as much baggage as we do. But they are worth it,” I say as I look my friend in the eyes. “I love my husband and our children.”
“She’s right,” Tali says with a smile on her face. “My sons are complicated, but when they open up they give you so much of themselves.”
I shrug my shoulders. “I know it seems like we come from different worlds. We’ve seen things Vic and Al haven’t, but don’t let that stop you,” I reach for Asia’s hand. “You guys have more in common than you know. Alex has been through so much. My heart hurts for him, he didn’t deserve any of that crap. Vic is the only reason that chick hasn’t gotten the paws put of her.”
Tali snorts. “Lord knows I’m showing restraint,” she mumbles. “I warned his stubborn butt.”
“Poppy,” I hear my children squeal in some other part of the house.
“Meliyah, Mama,” Victor’s voice booms. “Baby.” I smile and roll my eyes.
“In the kitchen, Poppa.” I squeeze Asia’s hand. “Give him a chance,” I encourage.
“I want to, but I’m scared,” Asia admits.
“Scared of what,” a deep voice rumbles into the room.
Both Asia and I, whip our heads in the direction of the voice. I notice the smug look on Tali’s face out of the corner of my eye. She likes Asia, we all do.
When I focus on the man standing in the kitchen doorway, I bite my lip. The twins have grown into two fine ass men. Now standing at a towering six-five and six-five and a half, Al being the latter, they are just divine.
Our senior year in high school they both started to put on more weight with hopes to go from playing college basketball to the pros. Vic ended up playing a full season and a half in the NBA. Alex has been oversea in playing in Spain.
They both hated it in the end, for different reasons, and are now working on a new business together, with Dad’s help. Dad… it still sounds so funny when I call Uncle Alex that.
Al and Vic haven’t let their bodies go in the least. As I look at Al standing in his gym shorts and sleeveless tee, I feel for Asia. She doesn’t stand a chance. Not with the sex dripping hooded look Alex is giving her.
When my husband walks in the kitchen holding our oldest daughter on one hip and our youngest son on the other, I cross my legs and squeeze my thighs. Yup, Asia’s panties have surely gone up in smoke, because mine are thoroughly soaked.
Twin perfection, that’s what Vic and Al are. Their rich medium brown skin, shows off their mixed Latino and African American heritage. Those intense brown eyes and their thick, silky, curly black hair. I lick my lips as I look over Vic’s muscled frame. I have to fight not to fan myself.
I have loved watching these two go from boys to men. Well, one more so than the other. Al is so much like an older brother to me. We have become so close. We talked nearly every day when he was over in Spain. The time difference never mattered.
Al was there for me and Vic through our growing pains. He’s the reason our marriage is so strong now. He helped me see what Vic couldn’t and helped Vic when his temper almost costed him everything.
We’ve all grown up so much. I’m not the crying, confessed, mess I used to be. Vic is not the young boy that couldn’t express himself as a man. And Al, well, Al is not the happy go lucky kid he once was. Not even the happy good luck man he had become.
Yup, the last few years have been tough on us all. That’s why I want Asia to give Alex a chance. He deserves it and so much more.
Asia lifts her chin, looking Al right in the eyes and says. “You.”
Victor looks at and me and lift his brow. I smirk and shrug my shoulders at my husband. Oh, this is going to get interesting.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Once again, I want to thank you so much for ta
king this journey with me. I know Vic and Mellie were a super young couple, but I’m going somewhere with this. I’ve been working my way to Alex, but I had to get through books one and two first. I think you’ll get it if you ride with me.
Thank you for the support. For those of you that are taking a chance on works out of your comfort zone, I just want to say a big thanks. I am an author. I can’t stay in one box. I appreciate you guys getting that. Again, this is one of my earlier babies with a little face lift.
The twins will only get older from here as they find their voice in the world. I’m excited about that. Alex has some story to tell. My heart hurts for him. Sigh.
Thanks for your reviews, messages, and emails. They are all so important to me and I appreciate them all. I know, I know, shut up and get back to writing. LOL, off I go.
However, never before I give thanks to the one the runs it all. Thank you, God for pushing me. I may not be able to see the plan in full, but I’m listening to do my part. Thank you, Lord for speaking. God has shown me favor and Grace when the world showed me no mercy and for this, I give thanks. These books in the Evei collection specifically saved my life. I give God the glory for them.
Next! Alex, you’ve been waiting six years, Love, Let’s go.
