“How do you think they will react?”

“The public nature of the rebuke will embarrass them, though I doubt they will admit to that. The Queen sent them an unmistakable warning. It remains to be seen whether they will heed it.”

“May I ask, mein Herr, what we are going to do next?”

Schloss leaned forward and propped his elbows on the desktop. He ran his hands through his hair and looked up again at Ribbentrop.

“I think you are going to see a resolute Germany. We have a long march ahead of us, but we will finish this thing. Herr Stalin will ultimately regret his actions against Germany. Not that it matters anyway. Thank you for coming to see me, Joachim.”

Without waiting for anything further, Schloss stood and walked out of the office. Willem stepped back in. “Will there be anything else, Herr Ribbentrop?”

  “Is the Reich Chancellor well?”

“The Reich Chancellor is grieving over the deaths of those people in Cologne, and the death of his sister. He is very weary. He wants to schedule a government Council meeting for tomorrow morning. I believe we should ensure that the meeting does not happen until the afternoon. He needs to rest.”

“Just so,” Ribbentrop exclaimed. “Please do everything possible to see that he gets his necessary rest. We had a very close call last week. I do not think Germany could survive without Heinrich Schloss.”

Willem Kirche smiled sadly. “You have said nothing that has not been expressed by the people who are close to him. Thank you for your support.”

Joachim Ribbentrop walked down the hallway to the elevator and then out to the street where his car waited. He wished he knew how to pray.
