Desert Impact Page 16

by Don Pendleton

“Tony told me that you were leaving today?” she asked.

He nodded. “Right after the service, once I make sure you and Katrina are home safe.” From the seat next to her mother, the somber little girl looked at him but kept her silence. Since her father’s death, she had spoken very little.

“And where will you go next?” Olivia asked.

They were at the gates of the cemetery now, and the black vehicle made a slow turn to enter. Behind them, dozens of vehicles—civilian and Border Patrol both—waited to follow them in. Colton’s funeral would be very well attended, according him the respect he deserved for his sacrifice. For a long time, Bolan didn’t respond, but as the limo pulled to a stop he realized that even without a new mission, he knew where he was going next.

“The future,” he said, opening the door and then stepping out to hold it for Olivia and Katrina.

She looked at him with a curious expression and he smiled at her. “Tomorrow is another day,” he said. “That’s where I’m going next.”

“And what will you do there?” she asked, her voice soft with the moment and the question.

“What I always do,” he said. “It’s what I do that counts, not the time or the place.”

“I couldn’t agree more.” She took his hand. “Thank you—for everything.”

The music from the honor guard lifted over the cemetery and he led the woman and little girl toward the gravesite, humbled to be among them, even for one day.
