Speaking of fear, though, given I now knew the boogey man existed, I decided it was high time I learned how to defend myself. I enrolled in some self-defense classes. Pete made fun of them. Anthony offered to teach me himself. I, however, wanted to do this on my own.
Fear was an awful emotion. I knew that from personal experience. I hated those moments I woke up in the grips of it, reliving the moment I’d confronted the demon.
Next time, I would be ready.
Yes, I said next time.
Forgetting the underworld that lay hidden under the human one I’d believed in for so long was not an option.
Once my relationship with Pete and Anthony went public, at least in their circles, my caseloads went from occasional weird shit to full time. I was now the number one public defender of beings who were thought not to exist.
Take, for example, my latest case with Mr. Peabody, accused of trying to set his house on fire while his family slept in it. I eyed the gangly fellow with the comb-over comprised of a few sandy strands and tried not to sigh.
“Let me get this straight. You claim the house is alive and that it’s somehow possessing your family.”
He bobbed his head. “Oh, it’s quite evil.”
“So why not call in a priest to exorcise it?”
“I tried that.”
“And?”
“The house somehow ate him.”
So, Mr. Peabody had tried to burn it down with his possessed family inside. This Amityville claim sounded like a job for the TDCM because, for some reason, I believed the strange little nervous man.
When we did finally convince someone to look into his allegation, what an adventure that turned out to be. But like Brenda and her stalking werewolves, that was a story for another day.
