  “You what?” she gasped.

“I had to,” he said firmly. “Charlie had to know the basics of what was happening. Even in hindsight, you have to admit that it’s a good thing I did. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have known to tell you Polaris was a woman.”

  “Max, I’ve spent…”

“I know,” he nodded, “the last ten years protecting him. And together, we will continue to do so. You’re not alone in this anymore, Ginny.” He smiled. “I told Charlie that I was a bad-ass in the field and that no one was touching what was mine. And that was first and foremost the two of you.” The expression in his blue eyes turned to ice and Ginny held her breath. That was his “kill” look. She’d seen it several times that first mission and then when they were working to rescue Charlie. “You find out who did this, Ginny. You find out who they are. And then you tell me. And for every second we were apart. For every tear you cried when Charlie was taken. They will pay, Guinevere,” he vowed. “I am going to make them pay. No one will be able to stop me.”

“I know,” she whispered. She closed her eyes and felt safe in his arms. She wasn’t alone anymore. “I’ll tell you as soon as I know for sure.”

For a long moment, neither spoke.

  “Max?”

  “Yes?”

“You’re not changing my mind about a motorcycle.”

“I’ll remember that in a few years when it’s time for him to drive.”

“Nope,” she said quickly and firmly. “Not gonna happen.”

“It’s a right of passage,” he pointed out.

“Uh-huh,” she nodded. “And if this one’s a girl, what’s your reaction going to be when she starts dating?”

Max inhaled swiftly at the thought of a daughter, maybe with Ginny’s dark hair and his eyes. Definitely Ginny’s chin and…boys sniffing around his daughter.

“Well, that’s easier to deal with,” he said darkly. “Charlie and I will bury them in your garden so you have them for fertilizer or mulch or whatever…” Ginny started laughing. “I’m serious. I know what teenaged boys are like. Charlie will stand with me on this one.”

Levering herself up, Ginny looked down at him and smiled. Max grinned up at her, drinking in the love in her expression.

“I love you, Max Shannon,” she whispered. “And I am so glad you’re back in my life.”

His hand caught the back of her head and pulled her closer.

“Back for good, sweetheart,” he promised before kissing her. “So, when are you going to make an honest man out of me?”

  “Labor Day weekend?” she smiled.

“I guess I can wait a couple weeks,” he sighed. “As long as you don’t make me sleep on the couch again.”

“As long as you don’t bring up Charlie driving again.”

He laughed and rolled her over to her back.

“Max Shannon, that is not in the least bit funny!” she insisted.

“Neither is the idea of our daughter dating,” he replied, before nibbling on her neck. “God, you taste good!”

“Talk about not fighting fair,” she murmured, feeling all resistance fade as his mouth and hands roamed her body.

Max just smiled down at her before kissing her.

  Chapter Fifteen

  Three months later

“Charlie Shannon?” An office aide stood in the classroom doorway. “Your parents are here to pick you up.”

“Where are you going?” his best friend Devon asked as he gathered his things.

“We’re going to find out if Mom’s having a boy or a girl,” he grinned.

“You’re going to an ultrasound?” the teacher frowned.

“Yeah,” he nodded. “Mom and Dad are cool like that.”

Charlie followed the aide, an eager spring in his step. His parents had married over Labor Day weekend. His name had been changed and his dad had promised him no more adventures like what had happened over the summer. That was okay with Charlie. Training his puppy, Sirius, kept him busy after homework and playing catch with his dad. He practically hugged himself. He loved that he had a dad. They played baseball and had gone to some games. His dad taught him martial arts and all sorts of neat spy-stuff. His mom was so happy now. Now Charlie understood why she had seemed sad at times. She’d been missing his dad.

His parents were cool, he decided. Even if they seemed to always be kissing and hugging and holding hands. And with a new baby due in a few months, life would be busy. But still cool.

Turning the corner, he saw his parents waiting for him outside the main office door. They’d come from work. His father was in a suit that Charlie knew had been tailored so he could fight and draw the guns and knives he had hidden on him. His mother turned and smiled at him. Her slightly rounded stomach was barely noticeable under the dark red silk of her suit. She kept two blades on her, in special wrist sheaths, along with at least one gun. She always had, even if he hadn’t known about it. Charlie knew he couldn’t have those. Not yet. His parents didn’t want him having anything to do with the Agency, but he was also pretty sure that they knew it was what he wanted to do. If he couldn’t play baseball.

The principal, a man nearly as tall as his father, was with them.

“See you tomorrow, Charlie,” he smiled.

“Bye, Mr. Maston!” he grinned, taking his parents’ hands.

His family was together. And life couldn’t be better.
