Sidney's Escape Page 16

by Nirina Stone

Sure, it wasn’t safe. There were the hunting bots for one thing... the raiders for another... but still. She misses running. They don’t like to run in the Red Dome. “Why run?” they’d say. “Who are we running from?”

Another knocking sound from the prof tells Sidney she has one more minute. Looking back, she sees the other kids heading in now. She turns back around to say bye to Lashes when motion to her right catches her eye.

All the critters and animals on Allenda come in various shades of red. So it doesn’t surprise Sidney that a critter moves up to her, camouflaged so well in the dirt by the time it gets to her shoe. When Lashes hops out of nowhere and stands between her and the thing as it does that high-pitched alarming squeal, Sidney jumps back, finally taking a closer look at the danger.

It has eight spindly legs, all curled in under its amber body. Its beady ruby eyes are so dark they’re nearly black. It leans back as it aims its long tail at Lashes, a tail that ends in a particularly mean looking stinger waving in the air like it has its own set of eyes.

Finally, it registers in her head. The word “Scorpion” pops up the same moment Lashes jumps forward, Sidney screams for Lashes to fall back, and the scorpion throws its tail forward once, twice, six times total before Sidney can move.
