by Adam Roberts

  ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

The spark that ignited this novel was a reading of Josiah Ober’s Democracy and Knowledge: Innovation and Learning in Classical Athens (Princeton Univ. Press, 2008); and David Runcimann’s review of same, ‘Bouncebackability’, in the London Review of Books, (29 Jan 2009). Both are recommended.

I would like to thank Rich Puchalsky and Andrew Seal, both of whom read an early draft of this novel and made many insightful and often substantive suggestions by way of improving it. Thanks also to Rachel Roberts and Scott Eric Kaufman. Thanks are due to the team at Gollancz, but especially to my editor Simon Spanton, the best in the business, who once again has taken a book that didn’t entirely work and made it much better. New Model Army is dedicated to him.
