He took his wife in his arms and kissed her. “Oh, yeah. This is what I’ve been waiting for,” he murmured. The last two weeks had been so hectic that they hadn’t had any time together.
When they came up for air, Eli noticed a package on the seat. “What’s that?” he asked, kissing her nose, her cheek.
“I don’t know,” Caroline said, breathing heavily. “I saw it when I got in. Think I should open it?”
“Why not? Later you’ll be too busy doing other things.”
She kissed him quickly and tore into the package. Her eyes opened wide at what was inside.
“What is it?” Eli asked.
Grinning, she pulled out the worn boxing gloves. A note fell out, as well.
Eli picked it up. It read For when you disagree, these are a great equalizer. Tuck.
Eli laughed out loud.
“You didn’t know about this?” Caroline asked, laughing with him.
“No,” he replied, “but it’s a great way to tell you something.”
“What?”
“You haven’t asked where we’re spending tonight.”
“I assumed we’d be staying at my apartment, then catching the plane to Hawaii in the morning.”
He cupped her face. “We’re spending the night at the ranch. Tuck has the house ready with flowers, champagne, the works.”
“Oh, Eli. I’d love that.” She threw her arms around his neck.
“I thought you would.” He kissed the side of her face.
“It’s a good way to start our life together. We can drink coffee in the morning and watch the construction on our house before we leave for the airport.”
“I love you,” she whispered.
He raised his head and gazed into her eyes. “I’ll love you forever.”
Eli took a deep breath, feeling love like a warm glow in his heart. Never again would he be alone or forgotten. He had everything and all it took was three little words.
Words he would never forget to say.
Not ever.
