  Chapter Thirty-Three

Bright lights created by magic and a set of golden gates welcomed their carriage as they arrived at the castle grounds. Escorted by lower members of the court into the grand hall all was decorated in black and silver which Dante assumed were the Enchantresses colors of choice. Each member of their party excluding their slave imp friend was announced upon entrance with title and full name. Queen Cynthia Keswick as she was calling herself was sitting alone atop a throne that was set above everyone. Her eyes immediately fell on their party as they entered and she waved them over to address her.

Bowing deeply Dante spoke first while holding out the gift Erchik picked up earlier that day for the Queens slave to take from him. “I was told you enjoyed unique perfumes, so I brought to you High Elven Musk which is housed in a magical crystalline container that is nearly indestructible. A favorite among my people’s court and a rare treat to be shared with anyone outside the royal courts of the elven lands.”

Lifting his head to see the Queens smirk of happiness at the gift he then offered another polite bow before standing up straight and returning the pleased grin. She was openly looking both him and Terrance over as if they were prized studs at action though seeing that he was still holding the hand of Laurina the Queens gaze settled on Dante almost as a cat who has spotted a particularly tasty mouse.

“Your gift suits your station prince. I must admit that I was rather shocked to hear that a small party of royal elves decided to visit my fair lands.” Speaking with a sultry the Queen responded sounding almost threatening as she continued to eye him from top to bottom.

Nodding a bit and bowing his head Dante proceeded “We have always had our people on the borders though not many make it back to the homeland who are posted on the borders. We received word only recently of your great changes in this kingdom and the prosperity it has brought to its people. Knowing that you have the ability to remove the blighted ones from the land has spurred curiosity among our court, because a small percentage of our people are becoming inflicted with a type of blight that resembles that of your kingdoms recent history. We’d humbly come calling the favor of one of the most influential and powerful of this world to see if not only could we gain her Highnesses aid but also an ally moving forward in these troubled times.”

Pondering her thoughts the Queen looked him over once more before speaking “I thought you were spoken for though Prince Randol? Is this not the lady you are to wed standing at your side and clutching your hand as we speak?”

Just as Dante was about to speak Terrance stepped forward bowing. “Though I am a bit less versed in the ways of your court I do believe he means that I am to be your suitor if it would please you your Royal Majesty.” Offering her his hand and as she placed her hand in his he kissed hers gently trying his best to appear swooned by her very presence.

Smiling and slowly taking back her hand the Queen continued “So it would seem, but any woman knows we all really want what we cannot have. So if at least for the night prince Roland could keep me company I would be happy to see to it that your group gets the private audience you requested to further discuss our alliances.” Her smile widening at the poorly hidden glare from Terrance directed at Dante as he stepped away.

“Of course your Highness we are here to please and serve as you wish it” Dante offering a smug look to Terrance as he said this and directing Laurina to keep Terrance company for the evening's festivities.

The festivities included some simple dancing which Dante had enjoyed a bit of waltzing when he was back on earth and found the royal dance styles very similar. This was followed by an eight course meal which Dante had already instructed the other two of the proper table etiquette and all three sat near the head of the table with the Queen as they were served only by their own slave refusing service of any other. Finding this amusing the Queen said little on the subject and the evening finished with simple chatter about the lore of the elves, along with their common crops and other such bits of information almost as if the Queen was testing Dante. If she were he was sure he had passed since he knew their lore in depth from the game and had done some trading, farming, and gathering in the elven lands back when this was all a game.

Having been dismissed the other guests slowly sauntered out until the only ones left in the banquet hall were Dante’s party and the Queen. Once she took note of this her expression changed into something more menacing as she stared down each member excluding Erchik.

“You should know I will always get what I desire.” Her Queenly visage of red hair and black and silver finery fading away and the appearance of a beautiful raven haired with dusty white skin and robes of black feathers took its place. “I am the Enchantress Seline and all will bow before my power!” The room shaking with her power and though she was directing a spell at the group none of them seemed otherwise phased which perplexed her causing her to float into the air and point a gnarled finger at Dante. “You will be mine Prince Randol!” she announced as a stream of black energy shot at him and surrounded him only to fade away leaving the Enchantress confused and angry.

Yawning and pretending to brush the magic aside Dante stood up signaling the others to as well. “Let me tell you a story Enchantress Seline, your story to be exact. Let me know if I get anything wrong of course. Once upon a time there was this fairly powerful witch. She regularly got her ass handed to her by simple minded people called Adventurers. Even more so than the beasts of legend I might add. Then the Adventurers disappeared and bitter about her lot in life she sought more power. Went after one of the biggest baddies who easily slipped away I might add. Then she took over a kingdom which she had plagued a while back with her own magic pretending to remove said plague with powerful light magic and began a new reign of terror. I would like to add that her spells that affect the mind only work if she knows the true names and identity of her victims. Add to that the fact that such spells have a minimum one hour cooldown, and well, you’re just shit out of luck I guess.”

Facades now dropped the whole party decided to remove their costumed Shadow Cloak’s revealing their true identities. Seeing this, the Enchantress screamed in rage as the doors all slammed shut locking the group in the room with her alone.

  Chapter Thirty-Four

Seline’s screams though ear shattering in sound had no other effect on the group who quickly took up their places as discussed. Terrance up front ready to play his role as tank, Dante behind him as the main damage dealer, while both Laurina and Erchik were in the back of the room ready to help where they could with heals and damage against the Enchantress. It didn’t take long for Seline to realize what they were doing and it only enraged her more as the memories of being hunted by Adventurers flooded back in. Now though she was more powerful, and she felt that she was ready to destroy all who opposed her.

“You will pay!” she screamed even louder while launching black magic at Terrance who had triggered his agro grabbing ability.

Energy darker than night itself splashed over the shield and seemed to explode in every direction. Stone became obsidian upon the touch of the dark power and wood and fabric alike wilted as if flowers dipped in acid. Only their group remained in the now stark black room. With the light of their abilities and the few small globes Laurina could summon keeping the darkness at bay. Shadows nipped at the light waiting for it to falter or recede at any moment.

Dante unlike the others felt at home in the darkness and use it to his advantage. Pulling it in as a shroud covering his very being he snuck around the room as Seline struck out again and again hoping to break down the shield Terrance was holding aloft countering her every strike and taking minimal damage in the process.

Waiting only a moment more Dante saw an opening and launched his first combo of attacks. Remembering keenly how stuns did not affect this creature he knew that it was all a matter of overpowering the Enchantress with higher damage then she could dish out. First he hit with Swift Strike followed by Scatter Blades and finishing up with Cycle of Fate and Shadows of Chaos which allowed him to slink off again, shrouded in the shadows waiting for another opening.

With a hefty quarter removed from her health points the Enchantress exploded with darkness. This ability used to be a phase two attack which only happened when she lost half her health but Seline had somehow become infused with much greater power then she had access to before. Everyone in the room took a significant amount of damage except for Laurina who was still barely shrouded in the light of her globes.

Knocked back Terrance retreated to Laurina and allowed her to heal him while Dante took an off tank role, ducking and dodging attacks while lashing out keeping Seline’s attention solely on him.

“What a sad old hag!” he goaded her remembering just how vein she was in the lore of this world.

It had done the trick and she was lashing out more sporadically and not paying attention to her health which was slowly shrinking. Terrance took over with the insults and the minor damage as Dante retreated to Laurina to receive some healing.

Watching Erchik occasionally fire off an arrow infused with his energies when the opportunity presented itself Dante spoke up “You guys are doing great, just keep to the plan and we will make it through this. If you see her get all flustered and she looks like she is going to explode I want everyone to retreat to Laurina’s light so you can reduce the damage you take.”

After that he shot back into the darkness and hid away biding his time. Once an opening presented itself for him he unleashed his Core Attack: Annihilation skill along with a quick Light of Chaos launching himself back towards Laurina with Terrance quickly on his heels. Dante having seen Seline use her explosive darkness attack after losing a quarter of her health the first time he figured she would do so again if he managed to take a quarter away or more again. Now that she was down to just under half health she was showing signs of doing just that. Terrance knowing how to read a battle fairly well and keeping close eye on the enemy’s health and actions he knew the moment that Dante hit the Enchantress with his bigger attack he had better move.

Darkness surrounded the companions as they huddled in the small outline of light surrounded by the explosion of darkness from the Enchantresses last attack. This time though the attack changed and everywhere in the room was covered in an impenetrable and almost solid darkness that was denser than the stone beneath their feet. New sounds could be heard though muffled, sounds of scraping and shuffling as bone hit stone and the grinding of stone on stone as well. Just as quickly as it had appeared the majority of the darkness receded revealing a small skeletal army surrounding the group with the Enchantress now seated upon a throne of obsidian and bones cackling.

“Play with them,” Seline’s shrill voice rang out “play with them all until they are dead!”

Though not completely expecting this scenario Dante and his group were somewhat prepared for a larger scale assault should she call in guards or minions of any sort. Laurina was pushed to the center and the three men knowing that she as the healer was going to be the main target surrounded her. Huddled there looking at the empty eye sockets of the undead around her unnerved Laurina, but she did not back down and instead prayed to Ashira for their safety as the small horde began their assault.

Many of the undead fell quickly in the first few moments. Regardless of how many they killed more appeared to attack the group over and over
in an attempt to wear them down. It was Erchik who spoke up first though.

“Unlimited arrows or not we can’t fight these things forever, we need to do something about the pile of crazy over there sitting on her throne laughing at us and having a merry old time” he shouted over the sounds of fighting.

Dante and Terrance nodded but neither could supply an idea until Laurina spoke up “I can cast a proper light shield around us. It can take unlimited damage for three minutes but it will be the only time I can cast it. Does that help?”

Looking at each other Dante and Terrance nodded and as if reading each other’s mind they grabbed Erchik and Laurina and pulled them along the moment Laurina cast her spell. It created a white shimmering globe around the group as it launched forward rolling over the undead in its path knocking them down like pins at a bowling alley. Not realizing what was going on the Enchantress only laughed harder in amusement as she watched the pests rolling along in their toy ball. She stopped laughing once she was knocked from her throne by the force of the shielded group who slammed into her and sent her sprawling onto the floor.

Again her rage got the better of her and she lashed out with some of her most powerful attacks which flowed over the surface of the shield as water off a duck's back. Seeing Seline stunned by her ineffectiveness Dante and Terrance stepped out of the shield leaving Erchik and Laurina protected inside and the two launched attack after attack reducing the Enchantresses health to nearly nothing.

With only a sliver of health and no magic remaining the Enchantress started to shrivel up and her hordes of undead fell to the ground in piles of ash and bone fragments. “Tarrok curse you Adventurers! Chaos will reign over these lands and none shall oppose it! As I was blessed by Bilgan the Goddess of corruption so shall you be cursed by her lover!” shouting this out before the last of her health blinked away and she faded from existence.
