Where Gold Lies

by Jacqueline George

So, there the story ends. Now you know just who you are and just how you came to be here. The break with this story is almost complete. Until Captain Hawkins appeared, the only other person you had met from those times was Ben Gunn. That is another surprise for you. Do you remember the summer we travelled to Devon to visit Aunt Harding? Ben Gunn was singing in the church choir there, if you remember the skinny old man at the end of the stalls. Thankfully he did not recognise me, although I certainly worried about the prospect.

There is one other person you might just remember. Do you recall when you came with me to Oxford on my last visit there, before we came to live here? We were travelling back and the coach broke a wheel? We walked a little way along the road while we waited for the wheelwright. We walked up the hill and came to that wild cross-roads on top of the Downs, and there sat a gypsy woman, waiting with a small child. That was little Lizzie, though she was a fully grown woman by then. She recognised me, though I cannot imagine how. Do you remember how she read your fortune? Then while you played with her son she chatted to me for a time. She laughed at you and recalled her grandmother’s words. “Ah, Dick! And how I wished your second dark lady might be me. Or even your first. Are you happy now your fortune’s made?”

  THE END

  About the Author

Jacqueline lives in the far north of Queensland, Australia, on the shores of the Coral Sea. She has a house built for the tropical climate, on tall stilts and with walls that open to let the breeze blow through.

Jacqueline writes romantic stories because she is an unrepentant romantic at heart. In a world that is drowning in poverty and violence, she tries to hold up a cheerful light and make everyone's life a little happier. That is a big job but it is fun to make the attempt and, who knows, it might just work.

When she is not writing, she is kept busy by her garden which is still maturing. Right now her coconut trees look young and scrappy, but come back in five years and they will be towering over the house. And what could be more romantic than a coconut palm?
