“I appreciate your concern, Keiko. Just give me some time.” Mercer fixed his tragic eyes on her. “I’ve got a new normal to understand and I’m not doing a very good job of it. Be patient with me, okay?”
He reached for her hand and squeezed it, a gesture he didn’t do often. Even though she forced a smile, a piece of her heart broke. She’d been right. Mercer had something deeply wrong and he hadn’t confided in her. He would endure it without her.
Keiko returned to her seat next to Ciara. Before Stetson returned, she had to hear what Ciara knew.
“You have to tell me. I saw something disturbing in his eyes. What is happening?”
Ciara’s expression grew more somber and she didn’t speak for a long moment, until she finally broke her silence.
“Today would’ve been his son Braeden’s eighth birthday.”
