Amanda Pilsner stepped off the busy Caltrain at her final stop at 4th and King in the South of Market district in San Francisco. She shivered and pulled her long coat tighter onto her small frame, amazed at how the temperature had dropped ten degrees since she had boarded in Redwood City.

It was her first day starting out at BillPrime, a promising new startup aimed at disrupting the consumer bill paying market. In fact, it was her first day starting her professional life. She was nervous about her new internship, but was honored to have been chosen for the Growth Hacker position. In a sea of other new Stanford grads like herself, she knew that there must have been something special about her interview that put her above all of the other candidates. She thought she performed decently on the programming test, but had to crash study Ruby on Rails since it was a language she wasn’t familiar with.

While walking down Townsend Street toward 4th, the realization of finally “making it” hit Amanda. Her parents had always emphasized the importance of a quality education and had all but forced her to apply to top-league schools. Unfortunately, they weren’t willing to shell out the cash needed to pay for the tuition. Four years later, Amanda was armed with a B.S. in Computer Science from Stanford and saddled with thousands of dollars in debt. Luckily, the job market for software engineers in San Francisco was flooded. She could have chosen a number of full salaried positions for over $100,000 a year, but chose a less-lucrative internship instead because she truly believed in the company’s potential for success, and the culture seemed to be very progressive and woman-friendly. The extensive amounts of equity didn’t hurt either, of course.

She stood outside the tall brick office building and scanned the door entry intercom system, admiring the names of all of the well-known startups that share the location. 29Signalz, Stumblr, and ShareBNB were all within four floors of her. She imagined the kind of talent she’d be sharing a building with, and the thought excited her. She was buzzed in and made her way up to the 5th floor.

Amanda read the sign on the front door to her new workplace:

BillPrime: So Easy, Even Your Grandpa Can Do It

She smiled to herself and couldn’t help but find it humorous. Her grandpa was actually a mechanical engineer with some serious programming chops himself. He thought her how to make simple games in BASIC when she was in 8th grade. He could probably build BillPrime if he wasn’t too busy sipping tropical drinks on the beach outside his new retirement home in Costa Rica.

She opened the door and was greeted by the front desk office manager, a young woman with a bright and welcoming smile.

“Hi there! You must be Amanda,” she greeted, standing and offering her hand. I took it and gave her a nice firm handshake.

“I sure am. Glad to be here! I’m super excited about my first day.” She tried to not seem over-eager, but she was. She was nervous, worried, and more excited than she was on her first day of college.

“I’m Cecilia, the office manager here. There will just be some quick paperwork to take care of, and then we’ll get you settled in at your work station. You’ll have your pick of equipment, though I highly recommend you pick one of the new retina MacBook Pros,” she winked at Amanda, took a stack of manila envelopes from her desk, and walked toward a conference room with frosted windows. Amanda followed her and they closed the door behind them.

There wasn’t too much to do, but Amanda found the quick meeting to be riveting. She had to sign a non-disclosure agreement, promising that she wouldn’t share any of the company’s deep dark secrets. She filled out the W-2 forms, disclosed any personal projects she was working on, signed up for the company’s benefit programs (which were all 100% covered by the company, thankfully), and watched a quick presentation about the culture. Free lunches and dinners, yoga three times a week right in the office, free gym membership, public transit reimbursement, chair massages in the lobby every day, ping pong tournaments….the list kept going on and on. This was all fairly standard in the Bay Area’s tech startup world, but it felt like a rite of passage to know that all of this was coming to her.

They finished up and Cecelia walked Amanda around to introduce her to all her new colleagues. There were about 40 people in total, ranging from UX and UI designers to engineers, data analysts, business development staff, and marketing execs. Many of them were heads down with their headphones on, but everyone was friendly and welcoming. She didn’t have a chance at remembering any of their names, but knew she’d eventually learn them all. That is, if her internship worked out. If she completely blew it, she could be out of there by the end of the week. Chances were slim, but anything was possible. What if she choked?

Amanda pushed the thought of her mind as Cecilia showed her her desk. BillPrime didn’t believe in cubicles, and only the most senior of executive staff had their own offices. Her space was bright and airy, next to a window, and she had the choice of a standing desk or sitting desk. She decided that standing would be better for her back and adjusted the table and stool to support that. Amanda had gone with the Macbook option, because she’s no fool. The thought of setting up my dev environment on a PC sounded terrible unless she went with Linux, and she didn’t feel like dealing with all of that.

Amanda stood at her desk and started downloading all my necessary software. She was going to be doing a lot with data and user acquisition, but didn’t have a clear idea of what tools she’d be needing. She started out by getting logins for all the necessary accounts - project management software, database access, email, synchronous communication. Occasionally people stopped by to introduce themselves and chat a bit, and it was nice to feel appreciated. She had to duck away from the frequent Nerf Gun wars that would breakout spontaneously around the office, but otherwise it was a pretty relaxing day. She felt a little bit lost with what she was supposed to be doing next, but Amanda was sure that the company’s Chief Technology Officer would help her out when he was in the office the next day. She was pretty sure her job satisfaction would depend on what kind of boss he was.

Little did Amanda know just how satisfied he would end up making her….

Amanda showed up early the next morning — around 8:30, and most of her coworkers didn’t stroll in until around ten. She grabbed a bagel and a cup of decaf from the kitchen area and went back to her desk. She looked out the window and admired the view of SoMa while munching on her bagel. People were bustling about below her ranging from well-dressed professionals to young casual tech employees.

The sky was gray and the fog hadn’t lifted yet. She looked back at her computer screen and read through emails. This company sure did send a lot of them. People started to filter in and take place at their desks, chatting amongst themselves about the Giants game the night before and the upcoming BART strike. She wasn’t comfortable enough to join in just yet, so she listened to the rumblings around her, trying to get a feel for everyone’s personality. The girl across from her seemed like everyone’s friend, someone that she would probably connect herself with. The guy on the end — she thought his name was Brad — he kind of seemed like a douchebag.

  “Miss Amanda Pilsner
,” a loud voice startled her from behind. “Welcome to BillPrime, I’m Jason Faio.”

Amanda turned around to face her new manager. She was taken back by how young he was. She knew that Silicon Valley was full of young entrepreneurs but she assumed that a CTO would have spent a lot of time in the industry. He didn’t look like he was a day over 25.

“Um, hello, that’s me. I was just getting settled in, it’s nice to meet you.” Amanda stammered through her introduction and tried not to look surprised.

“Let’s head into my office and get to know each other a bit, shall we?” He beamed a huge smile at her and touched her shoulder, guiding her down the aisle between desks toward his personal office. The girl across from her made eye contact with Amanda, in almost a knowing kind of way. It was confusing but Amanda felt that they shared a brief moment of understanding. She’d have to make sure to chat with her later.

Jason beckoned her to sit on a loveseat in his office and he closed the door behind him. I looked around the office and saw his degree framed on the wall. He was a Cornell graduate, but she couldn’t quite make out the year. He grabbed his Odwalla juice from his desk and sat down next to her on the couch.

“So, how was your first day? Sorry I couldn’t make it, I was traveling back from New York.” He stretched and leaned back on the couch. He was wearing a nice button up shirt with a business suit jacket and tie over the top, but had on jeans and loafers. It was an interesting style, and Amanda liked it.

“It was just fine, thanks. I’m all set up with my logins and I’m ready for some work to get started on. I just want to make sure I’m working on the right things.” Amanda clasped her hands in her lap and fumbled with a ring on her finger nervously. This man was probably the most powerful person she’d shared a couch with. He was also gorgeous.

“Awesome. Well, the Growth Hacker role is a new one for our organization. You’re not going to have a concise ‘task list’ necessarily, so you’ll have to be prepared to get your thinking cap on and come up with creative solutions for our company. We’re looking to scale swiftly, but intelligently. Your background in data analysis looks great and I really loved the product sense you seem to have.” He raised an eyebrow and took a sip of his juice. Amanda felt a tingle in her body as she watched his lips connect with the juice container. There was something about her new manager that drove her wild.

He was casual, but so put together. She saw that he had a basketball hoop in his office, and there were photos lining the wall of him doing all sorts of exciting outdoor activities — ziplining, skydiving, hiking, sailing. He clearly had a gusto for life. Amanda wondered how much money he made, and then realized it was a shallow thought.

“Yeah, I work really well in that kind of environment. I’m a self-starter, I just need to get a real feel for the product and get my hands dirty in the code. Get in the mindset, you know? I have some ideas already but I don’t feel quite ready to dive in and implement them.” Amanda sounded more confident when she realized that her job security depended on her seeming like she was prepared to hit the ground running. Nothing moves slowly in San Francisco.

The couch started to feel a lot smaller. His knee brushed hers, his jeans rubbing against her bare skin. She became aware of her skirt riding up and she pulled it down to cover up more of her legs. Jason looked down and Amanda could tell that he noticed. He allowed his leg to linger against hers for a few more precious seconds, and then he stood up.

“Well, I suppose we have a lot of work to do, then?” He seemed sad about that fact, but it could have just been Amanda projecting her desires onto him. What the heck was wrong with her? It was her second day on the job and already she was hot-for-boss? That was one quick way to make her work days uncomfortable.

She reluctantly left his office and went back to her desk, catching up on emails. One in particular sounded intriguing. A local startup incubator and co-working space was having some kind of mixer that night with an open bar, a decent local DJ, and a couple of tech speakers. It sounded like a good way to meet some new professionals and network, especially now that she had her first set of business cards.

For now it was time to focus on her work, so she updated her repo and started reading through endless lines of code to get a feel for BillPrime. She was happy she’d worn a cute skirt so that she’d look good at the mixer.

Amanda walked into the party and immediately noticed several of her coworkers leaning up against the bar ordering drinks. She walked over there and greeted them, ordering herself a nice glass of vernet. The music was quiet enough that a good conversation could still be had, but it had a nice beat and she found herself swaying to the rhythm.

“Hey, Amanda, right?” The girl who sits across from her tapped her on the shoulder, some kind of fruity concoction in hand.

  “That’s me.”

“Awesome, I’m Samantha. Sam works too. I’ve been a Product Manager at BillPrime for about eight months now.” Sam was a pretty Chinese girl with beautiful long black hair. She looked to be about her age, maybe a couple years older.

“Nice to meet you. I’m trying hard to remember all these names, but it’s definitely not my strong point.” Amanda took a sip of her drink and looked around the room. “Anyone else coming from work?” The question was thinly veiled.

“Well, if you’re wondering if Jason is coming, I’d say probably not.” Sam winked at her.

“Um, no. Of course not, I was just wondering if um…yeah. Why wouldn’t Jason be coming? This not really his scene?” Amanda decided it wasn’t worth lying. It was obvious to anyone that Jason was a good looking guy and there was no use hiding that fact.

“Well, you know that he’s kind of a big shot right? He’s an investor in a number of social gaming startups in the city, owns another gig on the side, and he’s an advisor for a couple companies as well. I get the impression he doesn’t have a lot of time outside of his BillPrime hours for fun.” Sam rolled her eyes.

“I saw all those pictures in his office — it’s obvious he has some kind of social life…” Amanda was kind of uncomfortable with the conversation but her curiosity was winning her over.

“He takes a lot of vacations. The man is loaded. His dad sold a company for like 1.2 billion dollars and his mom was a CEO for a large public social networking site. He doesn’t even have to work, but he’s some kind of freak who actually enjoys it.” Sam was dancing in place to the music, sucking her drink down rapidly through a straw. She stirred it with her toothpick umbrella.

“Excuse me, I have to head to the ladies’ room.” Amanda set her drink down on a table nearby and sauntered to a secluded hallway and up a flight of stairs looking for the restroom. A sign had pointed her this direction but it wasn’t immediately apparent where to go. She was about to turn around and go back to the party to ask for directions.

  “Are you lost?”

“Excuse me?” Amanda called out to a shady figure leaning up against a wall in the hallway.

“You looking for something, or someone?” The man started walking down the hall toward her and came into the light. It was Jason.

“I was trying to find the bathroom….” All of a sudden, Amanda had no interest in finding it. She’d found everything she needed.

“Can I grab you a drink?” Jason flashed her a smile and she melted inside. She wasn’t sure which had a louder beat, the muffled music or her heart.

“I have one out there,” she gestured toward the main party room. “I am taking it slow tonight, I have to drive back to the peninsula.”

“Well, I live on the Peninsula too. I’ll be headed back there soon and I wouldn’t mind driving you. Don’t let me rush you though, the night is still young.” Jason leaned forward and she could smell his cologne on him. Amanda leaned backward and found the wall behind her, and felt the room spinning. What kind of effect did this man have on her? She put her head in her hands and started to massage her temples gently. “Hey girl, what’s wrong?” Jason raised his hand and held her cheek, d
rawing her face up to look at his.

Amanda felt a fire inside her, a burning need to be closer to him.

“Nothing, I’m just feeling a little warm all of a sudden…” She felt his breath on her ear, every sense heightened.

“Let’s step outside on the balcony. It’s cooler outside.” Jason took Amanda by the hand and lead her outside to a small outdoor space with a beautiful view of the Embarcadero. They leaned over the side together, arms touching. She felt herself instinctively snuggle up to him and rested her head on his shoulder. This didn’t feel safe. Anyone from work could walk outside and find them.

She saw Jason looking at her out of the corner of her eye, and she smiled. She hadn’t been able to keep him out of her thoughts all day, and things just seemed to be lining up too perfectly. He took the last sip of his drink and set it down, then took her by the shoulders and made her turn to face him.

“I am not the creep that you’re probably thinking I am. I don’t know what’s gotten over me, but I’ve fallen for you, hard,” Jason whispered while sounding slightly embarrassed. “This has never happened before, I swear.”

“It’s okay, I feel it too. I haven’t been able to get you out of my mind since—”

Jason interrupted her by placing his lips on hers, fireworks going off within her. His lips were soft and smooth, and his tongue was gentle and passionate. She wrapped her arms around him and they scooted together as one toward the side of the brick building, leaning up against it. Amanda felt Jason’s weight on her and she pressed herself back into him. His tongue swirled around inside her mouth, dancing and playing with her. His hands caressed the side of her face, pulling her deeper into the kiss. She ran her hands through his dark hair and rested her arms on his shoulders. Jason then reached down and picked her up with a tantalizing strength. She wrapped her legs around him and continued to taste his enticing kiss, going almost delirious with the gratification that she was feeling.
