“Gordon, when I woke up last night I didn't find you next to me. Where had you gone?” Lisa asked.
“I had to sort something out my dear.” Gordon replied.
“Yes, but what?” Lisa asked, as her mind started to clear from waking up.
“My love, I told you, I have to do business at odd hours of the day or night sometimes.”
“I know, you told me, but you have been away a few nights now since I’ve been here and it has made me worry about you several times.” Lisa said with concern in her voice.
“Relax, my love, well.”
Lisa put her mug down on the bedside table and dropped her feet over the edge of the bed to where her slippers were waiting. She walked over to where Gordon was sat in the wingback chair across the room and went to sit on his lap. She kissed him again and ran her fingers over his head as she always does, but this time he pulled away slightly.
“What’s wrong?” Lisa asked, perplexed by his reaction. She stroked his head again and this time she felt a recent cut that had been closed up with stitches very recently.
“Gordon, when did this happen? I don't recall you having an injury last night.” Lisa asked.
“It happened last night when I went out.” He replied.
“What happened? And when did you plan on telling me you were hurt?”
“I got hurt while sorting out business my dear, and I had it checked out last night already before I came back.” Gordon said a little defensively.
Lisa sat there on his lap for a moment or two, thinking. Then she stood up and took a few steps back to the bed.
“Gordon, I’ve been meaning to ask you about this…” Lisa started. “That night when you saved me, what actually happened?”
“Lisa, what do you mean? You were there.” Gordon said
“Yes, but how were you there and how on earth did you save me from those two men?”
“All right.” Said Gordon, his voice low and serious, “I was there at The Smoking Gun that evening with some business associates. I had never been to that club, but after a successful deal with a new client they suggested that we should go down there and have a drink or two.” Lisa let him continue, she just nodded slightly to indicate that he could go on.
“So we had a drink at the upper level bar. I was looking out over the dancing crowd below from the upper balcony when I saw you. You were the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. I just knew I had to meet you.” Gordon went on.
“Aw Gordon, thank you, but please go on?” Lisa asked.
“I watched you for a while going about your duties and then I was called away to the clients again. After I finished my drink I went to ask for a glass of club soda from the barman, seeing as I never drink more than the legal limit in public. That is when I saw what happened between you and those two ruffians at the table. I saw them giving you a hard time. I immediately went to greet and congratulate the other people I was there with and told them that I had to leave urgently.”
“That must have been just enough time for me to have my spat with the owner of that place.” Lisa replied.
“Yes, I believe I came back to the balcony just as you threw your apron at the sleazy man with the cigarette. The two men that you were serving had seen that too and saw their chance. They got up and followed you directly after that. I knew you could be in some serious trouble so I made my way outside as well. When I got outside I heard their voices and yours. I rounded the corner and saw the pistol in the one man’s hand. I knew I had to get you out of that situation, so I did…” Gordon said trailing off.
Lisa was quiet for a while as she gathered up the courage to ask her next question. “Gordon...The police came to my hospital room and told me that two men matching my description had been found dead in that same alley. What did you do to them?” Lisa asked her voice faltering a bit.
“Lisa, I made them stop hurting you.” Gordon’s voice was only just more than a whisper.
“Did you kill those men, Gordon?” Lisa asked the question, “Be honest with me please? I need to know the truth.”
Gordon was silent as he stared into the fireplace. Lisa could make out the shape of his head and shoulders reflecting the orange dancing light from the fire.
“Yes, I killed them. They would have hurt you or even killed you. They had to be stopped.”
Lisa internalised the confirmation of what she knew she had known in the back of her mind since that night. Since the police asked her about what had happened. She already lied to the police that day, to protect Gordon in case he did something like that, but now the reality of what had happened was sinking in.
“Ok, Gordon, I understand that. And I am very glad that you did come to my rescue. And I don’t mind that you had to kill them. They would have done the same to me.” Lisa said.
“But now I have another question, and again, please answer honestly?” Lisa said.
“Ok Lisa, but I must warn you not to ask questions that you do not want to know the answers to.”
“Thank you Gordon, but I need to know.” Lisa said. “That was not the first time that you had killed someone, was it?”
Again Gordon paused for a while before answering. “No, it had not been my first time.”
“And was it the last time?” Lisa asked, her voice trembling now.
“No my dear, it was not the last time.” Gordon replied. He kept a stoic tone of voice all the way through her questions.
“Gordon...The two men who were attacking me, I understand why you had to kill them, but what about the people that you are telling me about now?” Lisa asked, “There must be something to it?” Lisa’s mind was running rampant. Who is this man? How could the wonderful angel that I know Gordon to be, also be a murderer?
“Lisa, do you remember our conversation on your first day here? The one about my parents?”
“Yes, I do remember.” Lisa replied.
“On that day when they were killed I had made a vow to myself, that I would do anything in my power to prevent others from going through that kind of pain. I worked hard at learning the ins and outs of the business. And as I took over from my parents, it was not long before I would start sealing deals with large enterprises across the globe. I met rich businessmen, some of them were kind people with a sense of family. Some of them, however were less reputable.”
“So you kill them?” Lisa asked trying to remain calm.
“Well, through the course of time I've met others who feel the same as I do about these filthy criminals ruining the lives of people they don’t even know.” Gordon explained. “We find marks in our daily lives. People who go around stealing and killing. So we sometimes meet up on our motorcycles and then sort those people out.”
“How many bikers are you in that group, Gordon?” Lisa asked.
“There are six of us.”
“A whole gang of vigilante bikers…” Lisa was struggling to find words, “Gordon, even though I do understand… What if you get caught?”
“I’m sorry Lisa, I didn’t know how to tell you, but I also promised myself that I would always be honest with you. This is why I told you. And my love, getting caught is a risk we are all willing to make in the name of what is right.”
Lisa walked back to the bedside table and drank the last of her coffee. “I do not judge you for killing these people, I believe that if you are sure about them, then people such as those who killed your parents, or the ones who wanted to rape me should die. It is a service to the world. But, honey, I don’t think I could bare the thought of you getting caught and locked up, or even worse ending up dead somewhere.” Lisa made her way back to where Gordon was sitting. She took his hands in hers. “I don’t ever want to be without you.” Lisa told him and she squeezed his hands tightly.
“Won’t you please stop doing this, Gordon? It is too dangerous, and I love you.” Lisa pleaded with him.
“My dear, Lisa, I have come to know that I had loved you from the moment I first saw you, and in the past months, my love fo
r you has only grown much stronger.” Gordon said. “After having you in my life for this time, I too have grown scared of having to lose you. The same reason that I had killed the men who attacked you. Even from that moment I was not willing to lose you.” Lisa hugged his neck tightly as he spoke.
“This is why I think that now is a good time,” Gordon said.
“A good time for what, my dearest?” Lisa asked.
“As good a time as any to ask you…” Gordon said as he took her hand into his own, “To ask you if you would marry me?”
Lisa was dumbstruck. Did he just ask me to marry him? Did my dreams just come true? Even though he is an admitted murderer? Yes, but the only way is if he promised to never hurt anyone again, even if they have it coming.
“Yes! Gordon, oh my God, yes! I will…”Lisa could not believe what had just happened. “But only if you promise to me that you will not take another life unless it truly is necessary.” Lisa exclaimed.
Gordon took a ring from his pocket and placed it on her ring finger. “My love. You have made me happier than I have ever been. The hatred and the void that I had after my parents died has now been replaced with joy and love that I could never have imagined. You are all that matters to me, so I can make you that promise.”
“Oh Gordon, I love you. You truly are my angel.” Lisa said as tears of joy filled her eyes.
Chapter 6: The rain is gone
It was two years later. Lisa sat on the veranda enjoying the view of Vienne. It had been raining for about two days straight, but Lisa always enjoyed the rain. It meant that she could stay in and cuddle up with a book. It was only a few days before her wedding when Lisa’s eyesight recovered to the way it had been before her attack. The doctors said that she was lucky. They had expected some recovery, but that her recovery would be in full.
Above and beyond that, she was fortunate to be able to see perfectly again. She was married to her angel, Gordon. Not only was he extremely wealthy, but he was also extremely handsome as he stood waiting for her at the isle that glorious day, in his white suite. His chocolate skin contrasting against the white fabric. He had worn a red rose which reminded her of the first evening she had spent with Gordon. After that they had spent many wonderful days and nights together. Enjoying each other’s company. He would read to her and sing to her with his beautiful voice. He treated her like his queen. And she treated him like he was her king.
They had decided to move to Europe, to get a fresh start on their new lives together. A life away from their past. Vienne was always one of Lisa’s favourite cities, and so when Gordon suggested that they could possibly move there, Lisa immediately jumped in behind the idea.
Now that the rain has gone, Lisa could look out over the beautiful lights of the city. She felt as if she had everything she needed. A beautiful mansion in one of the most beautiful cities in the word. She had her warm cup of coffee on the veranda and she had a clean shot of the driveway Gordon would use in a few minutes when he came home.
She cleaned the barrel of her rifle, screwed on a large noise suppressor, clipped in a full magazine, and peered through her telescope at the driveway. Her finger steadily curled around the trigger as she heard the motorcycle rumbling closer in the distance.
Today was the day that he would pay...

Here’s a sneak peek into the second book…
“They say couples who laugh together stay together. But Lisa knew that this was untrue. She had thought moving to Austria would give her and Gordon the chance they needed to start their lives together. Now had pictured living in the City of Culture would keep them in touch with the finer things in life, and that it did. She was, after all, at the opera. The tenor finished his performance with the customary high C that rung out over the auditorium like the sound of a trumpet. The audience was captivated. All eyes were on the attractive male lead. All eyes except for Lisa’s. Her eyes were peering through a set of opera glasses at the man with the thick moustache and wine red cravat. His name was Heinrich Glück, which meant luck in German. Unfortunately for him, his luck was soon to run out. Glück was sat in a private box that, where he had been drowning himself in Champaign throughout the whole performance. Behind him stood a man with a cleanly shaven head. Sweat was making his pale skin gleam in the dim light that was cast by the giant chandelier hanging from the ceiling of the auditorium. He wiped at his brow every now and then with a handkerchief that he would produce from his inside pocket. Lisa had been watching them all evening. She did not miss that every time he replaced his sweat-filled hanky, a glint of steel could be seen flashing under his jacket. He was the paid muscle that Glück had arranged for the evening out. Every time Glück swilled down a large swig of the bubbly, the sweating man looked at the chilled glass with longing in his eyes. Lisa could swear that he was on the verge of sticking his hands into the ice bucket, which kept the current bottle of Crystal chilled. He should be no problem, he’s not the only one packing tonight, Lisa thought to herself, her fingers instinctively fingering her own weapon which she concealed in her thigh holster below the elegant black dress she had on for the night’s events. Lisa noticed the audience standing up, erupting in roaring applause. Lisa stood up as well but she used the cover of all of the excitement to slip out into the hallways of the auditorium. She would take in her position in the foyer.
Lisa opened her clutch bag and took out her phone. She went to her speed dial list and punched her thumb down on the screen. The phone rang only once when she heard the familiar deep voice from the other end of the line.
“Is the show over?” Gordon asked.
“Yes, but the fat lady has yet to sing for our special friend. Time for our curtain call.” Lisa replied.
“Places…” Gordon said as he took his position on the old cinema building across the street from the opera house. He never thought that he would ever share his secrets with anyone, but here he was, married to the most beautiful woman. The woman who knew him for who he really is, and now after a few years of blissful marriage, was sharing his deep dark secret. He put the phone down on the small ledge of the old roof. Then his gloved finger found its way to the safety clasp of the remote detonator. Glück was going to make a grand exit indeed”.
